Komisarek’s job is safe

- September 29th, 2011

The Maple Leafs will make a handful of final cuts before their regular-season opener on Oct. 6.
Defenceman Mike Komisarek won’t be among them.
There had been talk through last season and during the summer that the Leafs should bury the contract of Komisarek in the minors.
The 29-year-old will cost the Leafs a salary cap hit of $4.5 million US for each of the next three seasons. In his first two years with the Leafs, Komisarek struggled.
But a new training regimen during the off-season has resulted in a quicker Komisarek in the exhibition games. Leafs coach Ron Wilson and general manager Brian Burke have made it fairly clear this week that Komisarek will not be going to the Marlies.
If the Leafs keep Jake Gardiner, chances are he would be paired with Komisarek. Gardiner is not going to make the team and sit in the press box.
Of the nine defencemen remaining in camp, Matt Lashoff is the one who is more or less guaranteed of starting the season with the Marlies.
Dion Phaneuf, Luke Schenn, John-Michael Liles and Cody Franson aren’t in any trouble of losing a job. Komisarek is good too, leaving Gardiner, Keith Aulie and Carl Gunnarsson to fight for one spot.
Burke always is looking to make his team better through a trade, but getting rid of a defenceman or two would be counter-productive. Burke knows the Leafs will not get through 2011-12 without injuries to some blueliners.
Burke has said he might carry eight defencemen. The two-game set with the Detroit Red Wings on Friday and Saturday could make decisions easier for Wilson and his staff.

Great to see a REAL battle for an NHL job by NHL defencemen …..were going to see a NHL “D-MAN” in the press box simply because of numbers rather than poor play…..Good on ya BB and Team…………………hmmm Lashoff kinda reminds me of Ian White…….does his job well yet no respect

Gunnarsson has earned a spot (I would put him ahead of Franson on the depth chart). If I were running the team, I would let Aulie suffer through most of his sophmore jinx with the Marlies.
