Carlyle: “I made a mistake”

- September 23rd, 2013

In hindsight, Randy Carlyle would not have put Phil Kessel on the ice after Buffalo Sabres coach Ron Rolston sent John Scott over the boards on Sunday night.
“I made a mistake,” Carlyle, the Maple Leafs’ coach, said on Monday following practice at the MasterCard Centre.
“I never believed in my wildest dreams that the attack would come directed at that type of player from the opposition, but I was wrong.”
The fallout is all anyone was talking about at the rink.
Leafs forward David Clarkson faces a 10-game suspension after he came off the bench to take part in the brawl in the third period of the Leafs’ 5-3 pre-season win.
Kessel, who repeatedly swung his stick at Scott’s legs, could be suspended as well.
The Leafs had not heard from the National Hockey League early on Monday.
Neither Clarkson nor Kessel spoke to reporters.
Though the Leafs will have to absorb the fact Clarkson won’t make his Leafs debut until Oct. 25 in Columbus against the Blue Jackets, captain Dion Phaneuf had praise for the veteran winger.
“I think Clarkie is a great team guy,” Phaneuf said.
“He’s a guy who takes pride in sticking up for his teammates, and obviously it is a tough situation. If we lose him for an extended period of time, it is a big loss, because he is a big part of our team and a big part of our locker room.”
Carter Ashton and Joe Colborne are among those who could be given a greater opportunity to play with Clarkson out of the lineup.
David Bolland, meanwhile, was absent again and is nursing a sore groin, Carlyle said. Bolland’s status is unclear.
The Leafs sent defencemen Stuart Percy and Andrew MacWilliam to the Toronto Marlies on Monday, bringing the roster to 31 players (19 forwards, nine defencemen and three goalies).
The Leafs play host to the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday at the Air Canada Centre before finishing the pre-season with a home-and-home set against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday and Saturday.
