Three cheers for Larry Miller!
Miller, the Member of Parliament for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, has announced that he wants Canada to review its participation in the United Nations system. Like me, Miller is upset at several actions of the UN including sending its special rapporteur on the “right to food” to investigate Canada, a land where even our poor are often obese. Miller sees that visit and its report condemning Canada and calling for European style social welfare programs as the solution to be a waste of time.
“The United Nations is an organization that was designed to work collectively to solve the major problems facing the world,” said Miller. “If this is the type of action that the UN will be taking then I think that it is high time that we review our participation in the United Nations.”
The other recent report that bothers Miller is the Committee on Torture document which blasts Canada for not doing enough to bring young Omar Khadr back to Canada and claims sensible changes to our refugee system will put lives at risk.
I’m ticked at that as well, when did it become the job of the United Nations to review Canadian legislation?
Yet there in the report they not only review federal legislation but provincial and territorial laws to see if they meet United Nations standards. But don’t worry, there is no attempt to turn the UN into a global super government, they just want to have control over our law making process.
The UN also thought Canada shouldn’t have used a most wanted list to find and expel suspected war criminals over the last year; they think we should have tried them here. That means Canadian taxpayers would have paid for the investigation, gathering of evidence from far-off jungle battlefields and the decade long trial of suspected war criminals. Not a good idea.
Personally, I think Miller is on to something but doesn’t go far enough. I have long called for Canada to leave the UN and this latest report will hopefully help more Canadians see this is the right course of action.
Miller’s comments have resulted in denunciations from opposition MPs and snickering from much of the chattering classes.
“We cannot isolate ourselves as the Conservatives seem to believe. Canadians are best served by a policy of constructive engagement,” said Liberal MP Domenic LeBlanc.
Yeah, I don’t think Canada would isolate ourselves from the world if we pulled out of the UN. Canada would still be a member of the Commonwealth, the Francophonie, the G7, the G8, the G20, NATO, the Organization of American States, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and a whole host of other groups.
Canada is giving $415 million to the UN. That doesn’t include the one time payments that we make if and when disasters strike.
Among other things we give $228 million to UN peacekeeping operations and $104 million a year to the general operation of the UN.
What do they do with that money? Apparently talk a lot because on the big issues that we ask them to deal with like world peace they are ineffective. Have you seen what is happening in Syria? Civilians slaughtered, children massacred and the UN talks some more.
And this is the group the lefties in Canada want to give more power to.
Last week the NDP held a press conference calling for Canada to accept all recommendations of the UN Committee of Torture, the one that reports to countries like China, Cuba and Saudi Arabia – all member of the UN Human Rights Council. Doing that would make instant millionaires of Omar Khadr, when he returns, and several other men who were tortured by – wait for it – Syria. Yes, we should pay for Syria’s mistakes.
And of course the NDP is not alone.
In the last election then Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff announced during the French leaders’ debate that if he was elected Canadian troops would not be deployed without United Nations authorization. Sounds like a wonderful and caring move – until you realize that doing so would give Russia and China more control over Canadian troops than Canada’s Parliament.
Over the next two months the UN will hold two global conferences aimed at exerting greater control by this unelected body. There is the Arms Trade Treaty that seeks a global gun registry and there is the UN Rio plus 20 meeting on sustainable development that seeks to use the environment as a wedge to control so much of our society.
If you look at it, if you read the UN’s own documents, you will see that they are the greatest threat to Canadian sovereignty there is and that’s why it’s time for us to leave the United Nations.

How will the NDP fear without their ‘parents’ the UN- who or where can they run too for every nonsense that doesn’t come their way?
Dead on! Continue to get the message out! Tell people to write their MP’s demanding withdrawal from the UN. With all the other memberships, we don’t need one that threatens our sovereignty and provides kicks in the teeth!

The UN (not unlike democracy) while not perfect is the only game in town. If you want to leave the UN, you have to come up with a better way for us to exist in the new Free Trade, free commerce world. Imagine the vast changes in Canadian Military spending that would have to occur without the help of our UN partners, like the US. Speaking of the US, imagine being the leader of our country and trying to explain why getting out of the UN is good for our relationship.
Like it or not our future is linked to the way in which we navigate our relationship with the world’s new direction and order. If we are not in the UN and every other nation with power is, we have no say, no vote, no voice.

Actually that is the case in most developed countries Brian. Cheap carbs and starch are usually the only things poor people can afford, so that’s what they buy an eat. It’s really sad these things have to be pointed out to you, I expect better from university educated mind or do you write them just to be misleading?

There is NOTHING democratic about the UN.
Only game in town? G20, G8, O.A.S., NATO, etc.
Military spending? Our military involvement in the U.N. is a net loss we get
NO money from them. U.S. help ? A) NATO,NORAD B) U.S. citizens hate
The U.N. too. C) military relationship effected? See above.
World direction and order? No thanks. You want to devolve into a U.N. steeple? All I can say is bbbaaahhh, bbbaaahhh , bbbaaahhh !!
Stephen our poor are obese, as is a growing number of the working class and the middle class. Obese, not hungry, there’s a difference.
