Could this happen in Canada? You bet it could

- October 23rd, 2012

Our friends at The Blaze have tipped us off to a good story about an Australian broadcaster sent for what amounts to government mandated re-education for his comments on global warming. From the Sydney Morning Herald.

CONTROVERSIAL shock jock Alan Jones has been ordered to undergo ”factual accuracy” training, and to use fact-checkers, in another damaging blow to his credibility.

Now some of you might be saying that this guy got the facts wrong and therefore he should correct it. Fair enough, corrections are issued by every media outlet in this country, but a government mandated training session in accuracy on a contentious issue sounds more than a little spooky to me.
Could this happen in Canada? Unfortunately I think the answer is yes.

It would be ideal if broadcasters and senior correspondents had to be factual. It would be a nice return to when Robertson Davies was the publisher of this paper and it was a model to all journalists in Canada.

  2. Rich Clarke says:

I agree it’s a dumb thing to send him for trainnig – however, the premise of this piece was it could happen in Canada.

The closing statment: Unfortunately I think the answer is yes.

    Based on what?

  3. KPeters says:

You should have Simon Turnill, from Australian Climate Madness, on your show as an Aussie correspondent. Maybe call it “Simon Says”. This is very important to Canadians. What happens down under reflects on the direction that the commonwealth colonies (England is beyond hope) are heading.

When I was young my mother would tell me, History always repeats. It is nothing new; it’s all driven by the lust for power and money. Understand history and you will understand the present.
But I cannot believe what I am about to say.
This time the lust is planetary in size.
Yes I believe it will arrive in Canada.
Alan Jones arrest results from environmentalism and Global warming being taught for so long that two generations of young people are scared to death of the consequences of doing “Nothing”, or of listening to the generation that caused it. (All pollution is wrong, like genetic pollution of our food supply, why single out global warming?)
Those with wisdom are separated from the youth and replaced by an all-powerful Nanny
State. The “Government” knows what is good for you, they say do not listen to those who say different, we told you they are the cause. Their greed has left your generation in a very bad position.
On the arrest, the “Factual Accuracy” Training is more horrifying than the arrest.
The arrest of a talk show host is I feel a signal to journalists. Let’s see if this causes any kind of public backlash, and if not too bad, (we could televise some over-reacting police action as well). It is definitely a warning that they are taking things up a notch.
And warnings abound prior to this arrest indicating things were to get to this point someday. A couple of examples are:
Feb 2008, “David Suzuki has called for politicians to be thrown in jail for ignoring the science behind climate change”,
June 2011, Australian Scientist, Jill Singer says: I’m prepared to keep an open mind and propose another stunt for climate sceptics – put your strong views to the test by exposing yourselves to high concentrations of either carbon dioxide or some other colourless, odourless gas – say, carbon monoxide”
In a Telegraph article dated March 2009, “Meanwhile at the University of the West of England in Bristol this weekend, a conference of “eco-psychologists”, led by a professor, are solemnly exploring the notion that “climate change denial” should be classified as a form of “mental disorder”.
Alan Jones is not the only arrest taking place.
Pro Koln, German Anti Islam group has been raided on possible fraud charges; in the UK 52 EDL members and Paul Weston of the British Freedom Party have been arrested. These guys are probably targeted due to Hate Crimes.
The censorship process is accelerating. The enemy has been identified but instead of wearing a National Flag as in WW1 and WW2, the enemy is us, me and you. Divide and conquer.
With constant Dichotomy, doing its job of “Crazy Making” on the population we are ripe for plunder. (According to the University of Missouri Extension service, the term “crazy making” is used to describe a process in which a victim of abuse questions their sense of what is real and what isn’t. People who constantly have their perceptions denied by an abusive partner can tend to lose this…

  5. Stephen Smith says:

Well all this from a country that has a law that you cannot have a shower9 no baths allowed) for more than 5 minutes and you can only have one a day. A country where what is it now 70% of the Great Barrier Reef will be gone on 10 years where towns abandoned to make way for a resevior are reappearing from the watery graves after only 40 years as the water vanishes.

Climate change or no all that is really acary.

  6. Rich Clarke says:

George – there are millions of articles printed every day. You found five or six.

You’re be hard pressed to conclude “yes”.

People have been predicting the demise of freedom for a hundred years. It hasn’t come yet.

  7. Jeff says:

when you consider how cold our winters are is a little climate change, if it is occuring, is a bad thing? Canada, Russia and Scandinavia stand to make out quite well, i think. I do think climate change is more of a political animal than it is a factual one. We have at least a double whammy happening where the government and banks are enslaving us and the threat of climate change is being used to reengineer our views and thoughts.

  8. Constantin says:

No. It is not ideal if journalists and broadcasters “have to be factual”. It is ideal if they chose to be factual or face the shame and loss of reputation when and if proven wrong. If you impose a point of view by “re-education” what you get is not factual reporting. Instead you get “correct” reporting as determined by someone with a whole lot of power not only over him or her, but over you as well. It is critical to understand why the freedom of being wrong is infinitely preferable to the opression of being forced to be “factual”. However challenging this concept may appear at first brush, understanding it is the foundation of a free life for your children. I do not want my children to depend on the “factual” reporting of forcibly “re-educated” journalists in accordance with a standard of truth established by “somebody”. In fact I barely escaped a regime that did exactly that. Do you want this for your children?

  9. Alain says:

Indeed it has already happened in Canada with various HRC rulings. While the topic was not “climate change”, it amounts to the same thing. Universities behave in the same manner.

  10. Dave Corkery says:

Might as well fact check, since all the kids are doing it now. What is going to happen to Canada when all the old, cranky men who retired and devoted their remaining years to criticizing the gov. full time, have died? Where are we going to get the anger, the fear, the paranoia over the changing landscape? What will we do when the L Green’s, the M Corens, and all the other right wing unhappy old men are gone? As the world changes naturally, who is going to cry that the country is not like it was in 1955, when the world was wonderful for everyone (well, maybe not so good for gays, jews, blacks, asians, women, etc)? We have to stop the world from changing NOW! Or it’s the end of the world.

  11. Bob Cratchette says:

1984arrives in Oz, comming soon to a gummint near you!

  12. Edward Marchand says:

I agree with you on this Brian. Considering Canada’s track record on issues of freedom, it is NOT a stretch to logically assume, that this could very well be a next step by the radical lefties that lurk in our midst.

  13. Lindsay says:

There is no such thing as news on the air and in print anymore. What we get is speculation, opinion, and gossip. Since when is a hollywood couples seperation news? It’s gossip and scuttlebutt only. News is murder, famine, war, robbery, accidents, natural disasters, political upheaval.
There used to be investgative reporters, now we have news readers, not investigators.
