Kevin Newman? Really?

- January 6th, 2013

This interview is unbelievable.

In the 4:33 that Kevin Newman spent with Danny Metatawabin on one of the most contentious issues in the country at the moment, CTV’s “Digital News Evangelist” and host of Question Period didn’t ask a single tough question.

Now look, I get asking tough questions while sitting face to face with someone is difficult but acting as a stenographer is soul crushing.

Metatawabin compared Chief Theresa Spence and her soup diet to the birth of Jesus Christ and Newman didn’t flinch. He didn’t follow-up either. Instead Newman asked Metatawabin what he thought of “reports” that Spence’s household income was in the six figures. He wasn’t asking about the income being in the six figures he was asking about the mean, bad reports that pointed this out.

Later in the interview Newman admitted to going to a benefit concert for Spence and asked where the money was going. Metatawabin nearly blurted out “hotels” which would have been a perfect opportunity for Newman to ask about Spence staying in hotels near Parliament Hill when most media reports make it look like she is staying in a teepee.

I have no problem with Kevin Newman running his show however he sees fit but he and CTV should admit to his champagne socialist leanings and his outright support for Spence and his opposition to the Harper government. If Newman is going to run an opinion show he owes it to his viewers to be upfront where he is coming from.

  1. Kevin Newman says:

Champagne? Guinness usually. Attended the benefit to confirm with my own eyes the funds are being sent to Spence. Confirming facts & challenging opinion – great for the soul.

  2. Aph says:

How about his replacement Dawna friesen. She makes Newman look like a right wing capatilist

  3. Fred says:

    Saw that.

Newman should hang up the keyboard if that is the best he can do.

    Truly a pathetic journalistic performance.

CYV should be very, very embarrassed

Its gonna get worse. Now that we have real investigative reporting here in Canada the left is gonna scratch, punch and lie to maintain the narrative and snuff out the facts that contradict it.

People talk about this “idle no more” movement growing but the only thing I see growing in forums and opinion posts is people asking First Nations….”where is all the money going” You can thank Ezra and Brian for shining the light on the real story.

I started to watch question period and just got sick of listening to the stupidity. Turned it off and watched a good movie instead. :)

How utterly laughable that a hack like Brian Lilley would take shots at Kevin Newman. The last time I checked, Kevin has worked for reputable news agencies like CTV and ABC (and done very good work at both), while Lilley hosts an amateurish show on a network nobody watches.
It’s time to give up your pathetic attempt at the Bill O’Reilly routine Brian.

I don’t normally respond to news reports, but this issue has certainly caught my attention as the greatest boondoggle (perpetrated by Chief Spence herself)) that I have ever seen outside of the various corrupt Quebec Mayors who used public funds to feather their own nests.
To think that the so called gurus of the news business including Kevin Newman , Evan Soloman and their assorted ‘pundits’ in their desire to always be politically correct, have helped her along in her melodramatic attempt to draw the focus away from her failure to protect and serve her own constituents by squirreling away the money for herself and cronies is a disgrace to the news business.
For Kevin Newman to respond in the smarmy way he did to the critique of his obviously under investigated and less-than-stellar reporting of the situation and his statement that he was only there to see that Chief Spence got all the money that was being donated (more bilking of the public purse by a very rich person) proves that he was right to retire and should re-consider his return to television.
Can’t wait for the audit to be made public.

  8. Trevor says:

Brian, you left out the funniest part of the story, which was at the begining when Kevin said it is difficult to make out how the effects of the hunger strike were affecting her under all those weather appropriate loose fitting clothes. Paraphrasing here but, ……really, you didn`t notice that massive gobbler of a double chin and linemanesque frame? Give me a break.

  9. ian says:

    Steven?

So, your response to serious questions about Newman’s objectivity, with provided examples from the interview, is to call names?

    That’s all you’ve got?

    Name calling?

    Go away, Steven.

You have nothing of substance to bring to the conversation.

    sincerely,

    ian

  10. ian says:

    Kevin Newman…

    “Confirming facts & challenging opinion”

Would have been nice if you’d done either during the interview.

    sincerely,

    ian

Chief “Double-chin-starving-in-tent” is just acting as expected. If you were caught red-handed mismanaging millions of dollars while the people you supposedly represent were living in shit-holes with leaking roofs, wouldn’t you try and change the channel?

The Chief knew the jig was up, and she simply grabbed the remote knowing full well the anti-Harper/Conservative press would play her game.

Indian “leaders” (many on par with African dictators)are only interested in the “idle no more” insofar as it will deflect from their own corruption.

caught mismanaging millions or stealing from your peolpe? Block a rail line or highway until someone asks a different question.

I hope Harper keeps at it an cleans up the mess. If for no other reason to see that innocent First Nations folks finally have the life they deserve.

  12. Henry Jakubinek says:

    Hey Kevin,

How is attending a benefit a proper way to “confirm with your own eyes where the money is going”??

Were you in the back, in some secure money-counting room?
Did you then follow the money to its various destinations late into the night? Did you then go to various banks to witness deposits being made (assuming the money was deposited)?

    Unbelievable!

It’s one thing to make idiotic comments but you make them with such convictions that you fully expect us to swallow these whole, like trained seals, without any question !

Then again it’s no surprise. Danny Metatawabin accepted to come on knowing fully that he’s get a softball ride by you Newman. He’ll never sit down with Ezra Levant or Brian Lilley for a few questions!

  13. Stephen Smith says:

Hey Brian (The Weatherman) Lilley Its going to to 9 degrees in Toronto on Friday and 11 on Saturday. Guess that shoots your minus 25 and four feet of snow so much for Global Warming quip to hell. I love when you write excrement that goes back to bite you in the rear. Too easy.

  14. Constantin says:

Wel done again Brian! Mr. Newman is paying attention.

Steven! Check this thread again and you may gain some valuable insight (provided the miminum requirement cognitive ability is present)

  15. Larry Bennett says:

I too don’t mind that Kevin run his show any way he likes, and in fact, I could care less because I watched it, I think, on one occasion when he followed around a gay stripper through the west, and etc.,, but I have never returned because it is of no interest to me or any of the people I hang with. He is not a journalist in my eyes, he is a “personality” of sorts, and I don’t do personalities. I would say that it is embarrassing to have such a spineless media, but it is similar in the U.S. and Britain too! Let us not begrudge them their lack of professionalism.
As C.S. Lewis noted: We must not overvalue the relative harmlessness of the little, sensual, frivolous people.

  16. Chris McEwan says:

Hey! Mr Smith, its called January thaw, get back to us when it is 9 degrees on Jan 10 in Yellowknife. P.S wearing your I LOVE GORE T-Shirt ?

  17. Bill Elder says:

Any one who watches this mainstream broadcast “Info-tainment” will make their head as soft as the empty suits they watch.
