The Green Party and American politics in Canada

Bruce Hyer

Green Party MP – and American – Bruce Hyer.

So the Green Party has a new MP and just like the first Green MP, this one is an American.

Is this the rise of American-style politics in Canada?

We’ve been told for years by our progressive friends in the media that American-style politics is a bad thing. There is no end of the complaining in Canada’s media about American politics infiltrating Canada, including attack ads. (See here, here, here and here.)

So now what are we to make of the fact that Bruce Hyer, the new Green MP is a Yankee import just like Elizabeth May. And I mean Yankee because like May, Hyer is from New England – Hartford, Connecticut actually.

What will the progressive left do now? With 100% of the Green caucus being American will Canadians accept them? Will the Council of Canadians issue a press release denouncing this as an American invasion?

And what will the progs do when they find out Hyer is pro-gun?

We aren’t to make anything of it. Its conservatives that use dirty tricks in politics. That is if you use the stupid logic that Brian here uses. I don’t see Ted Cruz touting our single payer healthcare in the US. Please explain what you mean by “pro gun”? I really wish you could explain how being born in a certain country determines ones politics. I’m not sure if you deliberately use logical fallacies to obfuscate or you just don’t know better. I am a progressive and yes we are thrilled to double our causus of Greens and make Brian here clutch his pearls like Lindsey Graham.

  2. Don Morris says:

Ah Brian, you missed the fact that May and Hyer are refugees from the (formerly) evil Empire of the USA.

Now that Messiah Obama is Grand Exalted Leader of the USA, and has fixed everything Bush screwed up, we Northern Mexicans should be damned glad to have Yankees of such stature to show us the way.

And bankrupt our Nation if they ever form government.

I can hear leftist brain cells popping everywhere…..

Hmmm what are the connections to tides foundation ?
May (giggle) I be the first to say “Yankee go home”

Kelly … I think Brian was being a “tad” playful.

These are people who came to Canada because they prefer our values over those of their native-born country. The fact that they are from the USA (or any other country, for that matter) doesn’t imply that our politics are being invaded. I’m sure that the ranks of other parties have foreign-born MPs. Are these people to be questioned in the same fashion that you suggest we question the intentions of these two people.

As for your pro gun query, what’s that to imply? Just about every Conservative Party member is pro gun & the world still exists. Besides, do you actually know for a fact that he is pro gun…or are you just projecting because he is American born?

Innuendo is the propaganda way. The Tories are good at it. Are you simply a Tory shill like David Akin & Andrew Coyne?

Do they sing the Star Spangled Banner when everyone else is singing O Canada?

  8. Marc Opie says:

You never miss an opportunity to (I’d like to quote Sharon here, but I can’t), make a tenuous connection.

WTF are you on about. Have a look at the grid lock in the US.
First off, you say there’s been no end to …. the give four examples. Perhaps you’re unfamiliar with the concept of ‘no end’.

Here’s what we are to make of the fact that this guys an American.

    He’s an American.

    Case closed.

“I am a progressive and yes we are thrilled to double our causus (sic) of Greens and make Brian here clutch his pearls like Lindsey Graham.”

    “clutch his pearls”? Really, Kelly?

Did you swipe that from Don Cherry?

  10. Rob Girard says:

What a sorry excuse for “logic”, Lilley uses here. A persons birth place does not define their politics. I was born in Idaho, yet am a Canadian citizen who is proudly progressive (and Green!).

There is a reason that Lilley’s pieces are in the “opinion” section, because ones opinion certainly has no obligation to logic.

Gotta laugh at the “progressives’ commenting on the website! These are the same clowns that continually have attacked for YEARS the conservatives being pro-American. and now Brian turns it on them, they are all upset.

BTW, and to those progressives, your hero in the US, OBAMA has proved that progressives LIE constantly. That’s why there are more americans now without healthcare than ever!!
But hey, the Progressives(that’s an oxymoron if anything) who say they hate the big old bad US sure don’t mind getting all those enviro dollars from US billionaires!! Yep—– a progressive means———-if you are all for BIGGER government with more money going to the progressives personal bank account, then you’re progressive!!

  12. John West says:

But wait, Americans, lately, have demonstrated such incredible stupidity as a nation that we really don’t need to worry about it much other than getting some occasional blood splatter on us. Elizabeth May is the best evidence of a stupid American.

I used to admire America … envied their greatness … now I am embarrassed by their voting habits and their growing propensity to be on the dole ….. like Canada.
