Create Emmy Awards hairstyles at home

- September 26th, 2012

Trying out new hairstyles a bit daunting – especially updos – so I find step-by-step instructions and videos really helpful. Stylists at Wella Professionals created looks for Julie Bowen and Elisabeth Moss at the recent 2012 Emmy Awards and shared their method below. The TV star’s wavy looks are less-formal than some of the other red carpet ‘dos, making them options for a party or dinner date.

The stylists, of course, used Wella products, but you can sub-in  your own favourites. I’ve only tried the Wella shampoo for coloured hair, but I found it moisturizing and long-lasting.

If you’re interested in other styling options, I quite like Scharwzkopf BLONDEME Mousse and Dove Style+Care Nourishing Curls Mousse for volume and waves and Pantene Pro-V Root Lifter Spray Gel to give lank locks a boost. Sally Hershberger Hyper Hydration Keratin Super Keratin Spray and CHI 44 Iron Guard are good heat protectors.

Julie Bowen of “Modern Family
Styled by Jill Crosby

The look:  Channeling a contemporary California glam sporting a sexy beach half updo with an edge.  Julie is wearing a chartreuse green mermaid cut dress, which inspired this textured style.

The method:

  1. Starting with wet hair, Crosby applied a handful Wella Professionals Extra Volume Styling Mousse from roots to ends to give hold, body, and volume.
  2. Crosby blow dried hair for natural texture, she didn’t use a brush because the look did not require over styling or a sleek finish.
  3. She then sprayed Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray throughout dry hair for more texture and also to protect hair as she used a 1 ½ inch barrel curling iron to create loose curls, which she separated with her fingers. Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray was sprayed throughout to set the texture.
  4. Using her hands, Crosby pulled the top half of her hair in a rough, twisted knot chignon secured with bobby pins, leaving enough volume on top to create balance.
  5. The finishing touch was to lightly mist with Wella Professionals Dynamic Fix 45 Second Crafting Spray to set the look.

Elisabeth Moss of “Mad Men
Styled by Cervando Maldonado

The look: Moss and Maldonado decided to “ramp up the glam with a look that would complement her gown and look clean, young and modern,” says Maldonado.

The method:

  1. Starting with wet hair, Maldonado applied Wella Professionals Extra Volume Styling Mousse from roots to ends.
  2. He evenly applied Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier while the hair was still wet to give her hair a foundation for lasting style.
  3. Moss’ hair was blown out with a round brush and divided into small, uneven sections.
  4. Each section was sprayed with Wella Professionals Dynamic Fix 45 Second Crafting Spray and then set with Velcro rollers for twenty minutes.
  5. Once the rollers were removed, Maldonado sprayed 2-inch sections of Moss’ hair with Wella Professionals Thermal Image Heat Protection Spray before using a curling iron to add more of a soft wave.
