Fashion Week: Rocky start

- October 18th, 2011

I feel as though I’m not supposed to say this, but last night Toronto Fashion Week kicked off with an unfortunately shaky start.

Shows began quite late, there was massive confusion getting into the runway rooms (ticket holders, industry and media members teetered in one giant huddle on achingly high heels – where are those airport lineup dividers when you need them?), grumpy media members were pushed to the third and fourth rows at the Holt Renfrew show (to make room for whom we suspect were socialite Holts shoppers), and wine was $12., which was just a bummer.

The confusion off-stage (see: a half hour search for the media lounge, which was in another building altogether), seemed to reflect on the runway (or was it just our moods?) with collections comprised of show-stopping peaks and puzzling sartorial troughs, which frankly, left me feeling a little seasick.

Here’s some of the hodge-podge we saw:

High: Jeremy Laing’s wispy show opener, with an oh-so-flattering halter neckline and a flowy skirt that was practically begging for a beachy breeze.

Low: Laing’s kimono vest paired with a bulbous skirt, which had an Asian militaristic feel and was a bit of a downer.

High: Lala Berlin‘s pretty blouse with shoulder cut-outs, which even made pin-tuck shorts (a source of thigh-trembling the world over) look appealing.

Low: A sheer-below-the-shoulders shirtdress that looked like a nightshirt that looked like a nightmare.

High: Arthur Mendonca‘s figure flattering sheath dress accented by sparkly cuffs.

Low: A white tiger print jumpsuit that’s perfectly on trend but not easy on the eyes (of the tiger).

High: A spacey white sheath dress with circular sliced shoulders from TwentyCluny.

Lows: A sequined ’90s polka dot strapless dress and striped jacket that would make Beetlejuice cross-eyed.

These are just the highlights I needed since I didn’t (read: no ticket) go to the show…too bad about the wine.
