Mexico vacation packing part 2: Makeup

- September 18th, 2012

As you may have read on my previous post, I’ll be headed to Mexico for the first time this week to visit the Grand Solmar Land’s End resort and take part in all sorts of fun activities like camel riding (!), volunteering (!) and attending gourmet dinners (!).

Because I don’t want to nip up to my hotel room every few hours to re-apply makeup, I’m bringing the goods I know can stand the heat(/sweat).

Here are some tried and tested long-lasting cosmetics that are great for traveling – several of these will be in my bag.

Stila Stay All Day Foundation and Concealer in Bare

Stila Stay All Day Foundation and Concealer in Bare ($57)

Face

Stila Stay All Day Foundation & Concealor ($57, available at Shoppers Drug Mart and Murale) lasts for hours on end (I recently tried it out for a six-hour cocktail party during TIFF). It works best when applied from the centre of your face (nose area) out, with more product in areas that need it.

Follow up by dotting the creamy concealor – conveniently located on the top of the bottle – with a brush (included but not pictured) to cover blemishes and pat on a little powder to set the look. You’ll be good for as long as you need to be.

Eyes

Yves Rocher Intense Colour Duo Eyeshadow ($19 each) is tiny enough to fit in your pocket, stays on all day and can double as a blush if you choose a duo with a pink shade. GOSH Mineral Waterproof Eye Shadow ($13, available exclusively at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix) is smudge-proof, waterproof and crease-proof and comes in a handy airplane-friendly stick.

Nearly every woman has one item she can’t live without and for me, it’s eyeliner. Without it, my face is completely washed out. My current go-to is Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner ($26, available at Shoppers Drug Mart and Murale)

A swipe of GOSH Intense Eye Liner Pen ($13, available exclusively at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix) will dress up day look for dinnertime. The tip is just stiff enough that non-pros like me can make get a smooth, even line. If black is a little too heavy for you, try lining with a black liner first and covering it with a charcoal or brown colour for a deep hue (this works well with Stila’s liner).

Lush Eyes Right Mascara ($18.95) isn’t exactly waterproof, but I’ve worn it through July and August and it hasn’t so much as smudged. It darkens lashes beautifully and looks really natural without any clumping – even after re-application. It’s also one of the few reasonably priced vegan and cruelty-free mascaras on the market right now and it’s actually good for your lashes and the skin around your eyes (contact lense wearers rejoice!).

Body Shop All-In-One Blush in Bubblegum and Ginger ($16)

Cheeks

Body Shop All-In-One Blush ($16) offers buildable hues with a little sheen and staying power, and it goes on smoothly with finger application (no brush needed). It’s also light to carry, unlike some blushers that come in heavy packaging.

QUO Lip crayon ($10 each)

Lips

My base will be an SPF 30 lip balm and I’ll cover it with a QUO Lip Crayon ($10, available exclusively at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix stores) which gives a pretty sophisticated long-lasting colour with a slight moist look. No lip liner necessary and no sticky goop to spill in your bag.
