Recreate Oscars red carpet beauty

- February 28th, 2012

Now that we’ve give Oscar gowns their due (see: red carpet report card), it’s time to take a closer look at the prettiest moments in beauty. Like many of the dresses, makeup and hair looks were exceptionally distinct this year, with scarlet lips and lashings of lashes coming through as a clear trend.

Here’s how to re-create some of the great beauty moments:

Jessica Chastain. (Adriana M. Barraza/WENN.COM)

Star: Jessica Chastain

Look: Nude lips and rapturous cat-eyes

Try it: Use NARS Satin Lipstick in Honolulu Honey ($30), a perfect beige for all skin tones, or for a little more sparkle NARS Lip Gloss in Belize ($29), a pinky mauve with flecks of gold. Create a fool-proof cat-eye with GOSH Intense Eye Liner Pen ($13, available at Shoppers Drug Mart) in black, which gives an intense, smooth line with a fairly firm brush that’s easy to use for beginners.

Milla Jovovich and Angelina Jolie. (Adriana M Barraza/Apega/WENN.COM)

Look: Ravenous red lips

Try it: For true red lips like Jovovich’s, try L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lip Liner ($10.99, available at department and drug stores nationwide) in Always Red paired with their Infallible Le Rouge Lipcolour ($12.99) in Ravishing Red. Mimic Jolie’s pout by dabbing Kiehl’s SPF Lip Balm in Hue No. 30G ($12) over lipstick for a hit of shine and depth without the sparkle.

Try it: Cruz’ makeup artist used Lancome Oscillation Powermascara in Black ($35, Sephora.ca), but we also love wallet-friendly Bourjois Paris Volume Clubbing Mascara in Ultra Black ($20, available at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix), which gives seriously surprising volume that will last through the night. Strong, evenly distributed brows will enhance your dramatic look and even make eyes pop – Stila All Day Waterproof Brow Colour ($27, available at Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques and Murale) looks natural when applied with swift, short strokes and really does stay on all day (even after a workout or intense moment of brow furrowing at work).

Star: Elizabeth Olsen

Try it: Dove celebrity style Mark Townsend shares his step-by-step instructions on how he created Olsen’s look (with affordable products!):

  1. Begin creating the look on freshly washed, damp hair.
  2. Apply a large dollop of Dove Style+Care Nourishing Amplifier Mouse ($4.99 – $7.99, available at department and drug stores nationwide) and blow hair dry.
  3. Separate the hair into 3-inch sections and spray with a flexible hold hairspray. Take each section and wrap around a 2-inch curling iron to create loose waves.
  4. Spray hair all over with a texturing spray to create movement.
  5. Take a dime-sized amount of the Dove Style+Care Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum ($4.99 – $7.99) in hands and rank fingers through hair to break up the waves and give them shine plus definition.
  6. Finish look with an Extra Hold Hairspray all over to keep hair in place all night.
