We tried it: Rose-scented products for anytime of the year

I am obsessed with the fragrance of roses. Two of my earliest scent memories are the aroma of my mother’s rose Marks & Spencer bubble bath and the bouquet of peach roses my father grew in our front yard.

Scent is tied closely with memory, so it’s no wonder I’ve been looking for a compelling rose fragrance for the last couple of years.

Here are a range of rosy crops at an array of price points to suit your fragrance fancies.

Rosabotanica Eau de Parfum, Balenciaga ($90 – $100/50ml Murale, Shoppers Drug Mart, Sephora)

Notes: Rose, citrus, spice, pink pepper, and white florals.

Feeling: Exotic, green, and enchanted.

Best for: Evening, fall/winter/spring.

Durability: It lasted about six hours.

Friend’s input: “Intense, old.” I think they meant grown-up.

If it were a gal: She would be Alice in Wonderland’s fearless raven-haired cousin.

Feeling: Full, intense, sweet, slightly spicy, and captivating.

Best for: Day or night and the cooler months, though I’d wear it just about anytime because I adore it.

If it were a gal: She would be a self-assured woman of many talents, interests and secrets.

Durability: I could smell it on my skin the next morning – a full 12 hours later.

Friend’s input: “It’s complex.”

Notes: Roses, magnolia, a little amber and musk.

Feeling: Clean and bright. Fresh roses are the focus.

Best for: Daytime, spring/summer.

If it were a gal: She would be a ballerina, graceful as-you-please.

Friend’s input: “It’s lovely, not too flowery.”

Durability: I could faintly smell it the morning after an evening out, which I rather liked more than when it was freshly applied.

    The trouble with rose is that it smells like funeral homes.

    @ Nokohe Haha! Fortunately for me, I haven’t visited enough funeral homes to make that association.
