Losing a friend

- August 2nd, 2012

Bill Kitchen was a member of the Senators Alumni even though he never played for the Senators. He was an ex-NHLer, having suited up for a total of 41 games between the Habs and the Leafs in the 80s, and a solid defenceman for the 67′s before that. That’s how he came to settle in Ottawa after his playing career; that’s how he came to be part of an alumni group that does a lot of good charity work in the community.
Bill also established himself as a successful businessman. Last I heard, he owned seven Tim Hortons.
Last time I remember hanging out with Bill was about a year ago. We were both invited to a party featuring good old Stanley Cup, who was brought to town by members of the Boston Bruins that call Ottawa home. I had a couple of beers with Bill, a few laughs, an enjoyable time. Just as it was whenever we got together.
I’m going to miss those times.
Earlier this week, Bill died of what’s being called a “massive heart attack.” Apparently, he was kayaking at the time. I was shocked to hear of his passing, as was anybody that knew him. Bill was 51 and in very good shape. He was the kind of guy you expected would get another 30 years out of life.
Once again we are reminded to enjoy each day because we never know if will be our last. As my mom says “don’t sweat the small stuff … and it’s all small stuff.”
