Daug Days!

- March 12th, 2013

Let the debate begin.
The shootout goal attempt by Kaspars Daugavins is the talk of the NHL this morning. His stick upside down spinarama attempt was something to watch. Creativity at its best.
It didn’t work.
Tuukka Rask didn’t fall for it. It worked for Daugavins at the AHL level. You can’t blame him for trying it here. Why not? Nothing else was working.
But, this is the NHL. This wasn’t the NHL all star weekend.
Sure, I loved watching it. Thought it was great.
The bigger issue might be the shootout itself.
You have to wonder if games should be decided this way.
Both teams were trying to get to OT and the shootout in the last five minutes.
Everybody was having a good laugh afterwards.
My buddy Doug MacLean from Rogers Sportsnet didn’t like it one bit. He felt Daugavins shouldn’t have done it in a regular season game. No place for it at all.
You’re going to hear a lot of opinions on this today.
What do you think? Here it is here:

I thought it was ridiculous. First of all, Daugavins should not have been so far up the order of shooters, and secondly, the move was something that should be reserved for team skill competitons. I sure hope the Sen’s don’t miss the playoffs by one point.

  2. ChokerHater says:

    I’m embarassed for him

did he have a flashback to Novice

Thanks for getting this on here Bruce

    Important point last night though

Keeps Ottawa in the race, I think every point from here on in will be very important, all the teams just on the cusp of the playoffs will start playing playoff hockey

  3. Bobby Goodman says:

Maclean knew exactly what the Dog was going to do, afterall, has Daugavins demonstrated any scoring touch…ever? It didn’t entertain me in the least and reduced the game to a circus. Shameful!

I know some here love the two young Swedes but you have to ask yourself, where is the speed, stickhandling, willingness to fight for the puck, presence in front of the opposition net? Last night, predictably, Zibby had 1 shot and did not venture into a corner and is quite comfortable now floating around deep in the slot. When the puck is on his stick, it is not there for long and we have yet to see any speed at all. When he finds himself with the puck and some room…there is hesitation! Dave, you may compare his numbers with Coutourier but Coutourier proved he can score in the NHL and he did it as an 18 year old. When he was scoring 14 in the best league in the world, Zibby was scoring 5 and riding the pines in the SEL.

Silfverberg doesn’t like the puck on his stick either and he most certainly doesn’t like the corners. He refuses to carry the puck and has to be the easiest kid to knock on his can! We can say be patient, time will tell but I see nothing that inspires me they will become decent NHLers. Nothing at all. Two Swedes that play on the periphery and disappear when the going gets tough…sound familiar? Coutourier has scored 4 of his 7 points on the road, Zibby has 2 of his 8 on the road. Coutourier has 16 TkA vesus Zibby’s 8 (it is difficult to take the puck away from the opposition when you don’t venture into the corners purposefully! Sly has 5 TkA.

I strongly suspect most are very disappointed in their play, they came with such high expectations. But numbers aside, what are we witnessing game after game? Daugavins and Neil did/do all the heavy lifting for Zibby and the same can be said for Silfverberg (his wingers do all the work for him). What do the kids actually create? Last night Stone got very little ice-time but he, a Canadian boy, willingly jumped into the corners absorbing the hits to get control of the puck (what a novel concept). We witness Smith carry the puck far more that the two young Swedish stars. We saw something from Smith you will never see Sly or Zibby do…beat the defence (and on this ocasion Chara) on the outside cutting hard to the middle creating a great scoring chance.

The Sens got a point in the game and that is great, I guess, if the the goal is to make the post season playing a very defencive game that bore the fans and the other teams to death. I would much rather miss the post season and secure a decent draft pick.

Karlsson was lauded last night and justifiably so but Brown and Potvin should also point out others who are having fantastic years. Certainly Letang has been great but quietly Subban has erupted. He has 18 pts in 20 games good for .90 PPGm (Karly was .71). Of the 18 pts Subban has posted this year, 12 have been on the road!

  4. Daniel Murphy says:

I am not impressed with his feeble attempt to make a name for himself. In my opinion, he is making a mockery of the game and the NHL brass should be very concerned, just as they were when Avery was waving his stick in front of Brodeur a few years ago.

If I am MacLean, Doggie rides the bench for possibly throwing a game out the window. What is next? Anderson doing a striptease in the last minute similar to slapshot? Sure, he almost scored but that is not the point. His stunt could have backfired by the time he hit the blue line. Are we playing hockey or are we engaging in a slam dunk competition.

If Ottawa misses the playoffs by one point, this is definitely one game that could be looked at as the reason why.

  5. Dave Schreader says:

have you people seen Patrick Kane in shootouts??

  6. Mike8888 says:

    Bobby,
You’re still harping about the same things over and over. Zibanajed is 19, lets give him some time. Silferburg is 22 in a new country and a rookie, perhaps we should give him some time too. By the way, both are playing way more physical lately.

  7. Mike8888 says:

The more I look at it, the more I believe it was a legitimate attempt to score, and he almost did score. I still say about 13 other players should have been shootung before the Daug though. That being said, I agree with Bobby on one point, that it was the Daug’s best game of the season. Perhaps MacLean was rewarding him, which he often does.

  8. Visitor - Pierre D. says:

I thought that attempt by Rooster was great Bruce! I loved it! The shootout is a joke anyway, at least Kaspar had a little fun with it! I encourage more of it!

What I didn’t like was Neil kneeing Kelly, despicable! MacLean, off his rocker as always, was saying Neil would get suspended. Fat chance! Neil has a free pass for some reason. Bobby, the style the Senators are playing right now is what will win in the playoffs! Excitement does not advance you past round one. As for Zib Bobby I will disagree. He is turning out to be a pretty good kid! The other one, Silfverberg is a massive disappointment and I would trade him for a nasty young man (or Cory Perry, a man can dream!) as soon as possible.

I hope Bryan doesn’t sell the farm at the trade deadline. Let’s face it, unless we face the Hurricanes we’re done like dinner. Pittsburgh would demolish us. Montreal would be a lot of fun but we’d probably lose in six. Boston? No chance. Oh, Toronto we could beat IF we found a way to neutralize Kessel, Kadrim Lupul and if their forwards and defensemen didn’t hit us. Murray says he needs a fighter, we don’t need fighters we need forwards that aare big and PLAY big. There is a great one in Anaheim that Murray drafted….I would honestly offer Silfverberg, Michalek, 1st in 2013, 1st in 2014, conditional second (Senators reaching third round) and see where that goes.

Off to Montreal tomorrow eh? Don’t eat too much poutine you two. ;)

  9. Daniel Murphy says:

Dave, I agree with you 100%. Patrick Kane’s antics is almost as bad as what we saw last night. There have been numerous outrageous shoot out styles. I know the rule says anything goes as long as the player is moving forward etc…however some discretion has to be given to the referees to whistle down non-hockey, or non traditional moves. Anybody who has played hockey knows the difference between a legitimate hockey move and some qwerky acrobatic attempt at scoring.

  10. Daniel Murphy says:

Poor grammar. First sentence in my previous blog should read “are almost” not “is almost”

Dave, I agree with you 100%. Patrick Kane’s antics are almost as bad as what we saw last night.

  11. KevinF says:

Don’t know why there is any controversy he is just making a mockery of the shootout already itself a mockery of real hockey. Don’t see why this any different, as Dave S accurately points out, than P Kane’s little moves or for that matter any one who does the standard deke to “open up the 5 hole”. I hope it gets more and more stupid and people will come to the realization that there is nothing more asinine than awarding a point to the winner of this foolishness and ultimately that there is absolutely nothing wrong with a regular season draw.

  12. PaV says:

    Choke, still hiding I see.

Dan, he is young he will learn.

Mike, it is what it is. He shouldn’t have done it.

Habs tomorrow. Going to be tough.

Anyone up for a OTP first period punt?

We have been talking about it for a while.

  13. PaV says:

Ugh. Punt was meant to be pint.

  14. OD99 says:

Wow – even for this crowd the chatter on the Daug move is harsh. He gave it whirl and all he really did was put a different slant on the same spinorama lots of guys use now.

Personally I still don’t like the shoot-out but other than Turris it was the only attempt that looked like it might go in – Rask made a great save but also got a little lucky – the puck could have gone 5-hole or if his stick didn’t jam the net I think Daug pushes the puck across the line.

The Sens have trouble in the shoot-out each and every year so trying something different is a good thing in my books.

Bobby I know you only see the negative in the young guys and that is fine so I won’t attempt to change your views but I think Zibby is showing he will be a player (if he scores 3 more goals the rest of the way that would equal the 14 that Couts put up last season) and Silf was much better along the boards against both the NYR and the Bruins.

Nobody should have expected them to come in and lead the team and I have admitted a few times that I think Silf has taken longer than I expected to get acclimated but I still see some good things.

I only throw Couts out there because you always want to compare players to enhance their negatives…

Karlsson isn’t Weber or Chara or Letang or whoever…

Zibby isn’t Gallagher and somehow what he did last year in the SEL and what Couts did in the NHL is still relevant when Zibby has by all accounts at least matched Couts this year.

I like how we can discuss things now Bobby but the constant harping on the same stuff man…come on…they the players we have right now and they are young and inexperienced in both the NA game and the NHL…at least give it half a season before we throw them away.

  15. OD99 says:

In the positive news section of my comments the B-Sens continue to get it done and the extra time has proven to be a boon for Prince, Pageau and I would say especially Cowick who has really impressed me the last few weeks.

He is quick, physical and has a good shot plus he goes to the dirty areas to score…if Prince keeps up this pace he will get a good look at training camp next year.

This tough guy we picked it up looks like a plug for sure…he averages about 3 minutes a game…I hope he is only in the line-up when necessary.

  16. Bobby Goodman says:

Are they really Mikey? You are watching/seeing something very different than I. You cannot teach courage…but maybe it can be bought! Make no mistake, Kassian is now a Sen to help a couple of others to grow a pair and get involved! If someone unfamiliar with the hockey club watched the game the other night, they certainly wouldn’t have recognized Sly and Zibby as the future stars! Others including the Dog would have been their choice. I don’t mind mistakes by rookies; I would rather see them make an effort to carry the puck, make moves and create something than float around the periphery. But, that is just me. You are a loyal fan Mikey and that is great but can you sincerely say you have been entertained and encouraged by these two? Sly is 22 years old and he has 4g and 3a in 22 games! He was Mr. Everything in the SEL! You will be watching the game tonight against the Habs and I ask you to notice how often they touch the puck, how far they carry it (how long it is on their stick), how frequently they venture into the corner first to gain possession of the puck, how often you witness their speed/skill, if they stickhandle around anyone, how often they dig in and plant themselves in front of opposition goalie to fight for loose pucks and we will have this conversation again tomorrow.

Edmonton may have a nice guy as their coach but I think his “cerebral” approach isn’t working at all. The problem is most of the team are in the minus column! Only two have a plus in the +/- and one of them is Magnus Parjaarvi. He now has scored 5 goals, 7 points and plus 3 playing a maximum of 12 minutes a night on the 3rd and 4th line. The 20 year old, who as an 18 year old in a new country and league scored 16 goals (no excuses for him), shows off his speed and courage every game and he did so again last night!

Isn’t it interesting (I find it confusing) that Steve Yzerman is the default, go to guy for Team(s) Canada?! His Tampa Bay Lightning beat Florida last night which, had they lost, would have put them 30th in the 30 team league! The Bolts won with a total of 13 shots on net, 3 in periods 1 and 2 and 7 in the 3rd. Mr. Happy has a reputation for selecting players who are “responsible in all 3 zones on the ice” and has foresaken talented kids for older slugs to represent our Nation yet his NHL team is one of the league’s worst for goals scored against! Only 5 other teams have allowed more goals. Someone/anyone please explain to me why he is the architect for the 2014 Olympic Team??

Everyone is talking about how fresh and new the Dog’s move was, the only thing fresh and new was him doing it in an NHL game! It has been around forever!

  17. Gerry says:

I don’t understand why Daugavins gets to shoot among the first 3 shooters. On Monday, Latendresse scored a beautie. He should have been rewarded with a shot among the first 3 shooters. I would also vote for Zibanejad ahead of Daugavins.

  18. Bobby Goodman says:

Well Mikey, did you like what you saw last night? Did you witness the speed, skill, courage? Did you see the willingness to carry the puck beyond 20 feet? Did you see the stickhandling, play making? Did you see the kids jump into the corners or stand in front of the net? I didn’t.

Sly is still stuck on 4 goals in 27 games; he had one assist on the PP which offers lots of room with no hitting. He didnt earn a TKa, had one hit and 1 GVa. He spent as much time on his rear end as he did on his skates and even fell down in a desperate effort to avoid being hit.

Zibanejad again floated around the perimeter and did precious little. He scored on the PP and now has 3 of his 6 goals with the man advantage when again, it is soft, lots of open ice and he can play his game standing in the high slot waiting for others to do the work for him. He didn’t get an assist (and he is a centerman)

  19. Bobby Goodman says:

    Cont’d

didn’t block a shot, wasn’t creditted with a single hit with not a single TKa! In reality, Zibby has 4 goals with the man advantage because he scored one moments after a penalty expired and penalized player was stepping on the ice.

If floating around the perimeter waiting for others to get you the puck and then doing nothing with it gets you excited and gives you confidence they will evolve into the great players, then I say good on you. But it doesn’t do it for me. Indeed, after their performance last night I think they should have been an embarrassment when you look at what a 5-9, 178 lb rookie is willing to put his body through to help his team win. It is obvious to me that I am one of only a few who is not joining the multitudes in support of their play. We have heard Murray talk about their skating and speed, at one point he even suggested that Zibby’s game was skating but do we witness it at all. It certainly isn’t his playmaking; I grew up believing a centerman makes the plays but this kid doesn’t and his 3 assists is testimony. His play has regressed, he and Sly live on the periphery but will anyone admit it? I don’t think so Mikey!

The team earned a point and that is good (I guess) but again they allowed over 40 points; last night is was 45! They must have a system that limits the opposition to less that 50! Lehner was great at times but he did allow 6 goals to be scored counting 2 in the shoot out! He is not good in a shoot out but he is the “Chosen”.

Give aways are no longer noteworthy, Spezza isn’t playing! Last night the Big Rig gave it away 4 times! But, he the Big Rig and it’s all good!

Methot played another great game. Wiercoch is looking more comfortable and his goal was a thing of beauty. Turris played hard. Daugavins is now minus 8!
