Fearless Predictions

- April 27th, 2012

Here goes for Round 2.

These are DON BRENNAN’S:

Washington over New York in six: Caps finally have a goalie
Philadelphia over New Jersey in five: Flyers’ French Connection (Giroulx and Briere) will be the difference.

Nashville over Phoenix in six: Predators and their mohawks are the better team, starting in net
St. Louis over L.A. In seven: Might not be 20 goals scored in the entire series.

BRUCE GARRIOCH

Rangers over Caps in 6: Henrik Lundqvist looks like he might finally be rounding into form. Rangers find a way to get it done.

Flyers over Devils in 6: Philly might be the best team in the East. This could be easy work if Bryzgalov stops the puck.

WEST

Los Angeles over St. Louis in 6: At some point, the bubble is going to burst with the Blues. Kings knocked off a top seed.

Predators over Coyotes in 5: I liked the Hawks in the last round. I like the Predators in this round. Determined to win.

Enjoy the playoffs.

It is amazing to see so many goalies, steal or nearly steal a series. It is criminal that Phoenix beat Chicago and althought it was great for Coyote fans, it really doesn’t make for good viewing. Washington stumbled upon a kid who was ignored for 82 games and he beat Boston. Nashville is getting stronger every game but they beat the aging Red Wings becasue they have the 2012 Vezina Trophy winner ‘tween the pipes. Florida almost beat New Jersey. Lundquist and our Anderson were fabulous. There is no comparing goalies of yesteryear and the the goalies today. LIke athletes in every sport and the six million dollar man, they are all bigger, stronger, faster…better!

Rangers over Caps – Ottawa simply has NYR’s number (and the one of the 2 best goalies in the world)
Flyers over Devils – Philly is deeper, tougher, better goaltending, and has the best player in the world, right now!
Nashville over Phoenix – 39 save nights can’t continue…can it?
La over St Louis – this is a hard one but LA has Quick and one the best D in Drew Doughty (a real defenceman)

  2. Bobby Goodman says:

I agree with Don’s article and losing is not laughing matter. The storied coach of the Greenbay Packers said it best many years ago: “show me a good loser and I will show you a…loser”. Witnessing players smiling/laughing after the game makes me ill. Gilroy was smiling as was Karlie; I am sure they were both relieved it was over because they were awful and made no effort. I know it is taboo to talk about it but did Karlie demonstrate his speed at all this series? Did anyone see an effort? I certainly didn’t.

The future only looks bright because Sifvergerg and Zibanejad and Stone? No talk about Petersson, Hoffman, Peumpal, Noesen? I wonder how many goals Petersson or Hoffman might have scored in the SEL? They may not pan out but is scoring 5 goals in the SEL something to get excited about? Didn’t you guys all fall in love with Rundlad? He like Silfverberg had ann outstanding year in the Don’t Squeaze the Charmin League? His 50 pts in 55 games was outstanding…in the SEL but here in Ottawa he had but one goal and 2 assists in 24 games and like the other star Da Costa was a liability with a big fat minus 11. After 30 games in the AHL he had a respectable 7 goals but a God awful minus 18! Is the SEL a great league…perhaps for boys. If Hoffman can score 21 in the AHL he may have scored 210 in a league of boys a great big ice surface. Lets get something strait, the big ice surface makes it far more difficult to defend because it limits the ability to box anyone in. Skilled players have that much more room to show off ther speed and skill. Personally, I favor the big ice surface and it is my contention it would be far safer.

If the Missing Klink, Condra, OmyGod’Brien, Gilroy, Daisey the Air Rifle, Konopka, Butler got Butlered and 2 SEL Grads are enough to get you excited Bruce, you are even more different than me than I thought (or, are you simply toeing the company line). I strongly suspect the team will be worse next year for a variety of reasons, not the least of which the team played way over their heads. Praise Alfie will not be hear to “mentor” the Swedes. Perhaps the organization can get the lemmings to start counting down from number 19 and make him a God…what do you think? Or, will they start from 65? They have some old, getting older, soft and slow defencemen. Cowen will be OK at the very best. Gilroy for Lee was a mistake but, no one will talk or write about that move. I will predict that Karlie will never match his scoring feats of 2012 (and indeed they were outstanding). As I have said, since his 5 point game versus the Jets, he has done very little and the teams know who to neuter him.

It will be interesting to see what the coach will do next year beside being a nice guy. Maybe Butler, Da Costa, the “offensively minded” Gilroy will play 82 games. If it was my decision I would have Prince, Noesen, Peumpal, Zibby, Silfverberg, all play in the AHL and prove they can succeed like what Hoffman and Petersson did.

  3. Visitor - Pierre D. says:

    I agree bobby.

You know who was team captain on Silfverdud’s team? Andreas Dackell!
The same Dackell that was marginal winger elevated to godhood because he played here in Ottawa. They called him “The Machine” but they should have called him “The Lay-Z-Boy” because when it came to the crunch he saw no effort.

About the laughing, the Senators are a country club. We know this and have always known this since Murray took over. The media are deathly afraid of questioning Murray because he’ll cut them off from “scoops” and those great stories from way back when.

    I have several questions:

1)Why did Silfverdud draw in for Stone, who kept with the NHL pace and actually produce?
2)Why return to Silfverdud in game 7 when he looked completely lost and ineffective in game 6?
3)Where is Karlsson? That’s now two playoff series lost with Erik Karlsson in the lineup. And another thrown away for Silfverdud’s ego. The more softy euros we add the farher away we are from the playoffs.
4)Princess K saying he’ll miss Alfie…he can’t just walk from the guest bedroom to the living room? Or is he finally on his own. At least he got a haircut, he looked like a flipping dirty hippie with that long hair.
5)Spezza seemed either lost or hamstrung out there. He is a fine player but he really needs a Dave Andreychuk type to grind it out and create space for him. Michalek is a useless plug and Greening/Butler/Silfverdud are not ready for prime time.
6)Why did Anderson walk off during the handshake? He played well, I get he was upset but man up and shake hands.
7)Will Mr. Pringles survive another season now that he had the audacity to bench his stars for a few shifts? I think not. I think Don and Bruce will call for his head and the all too amiable and giving Melnyk will allow his adopted son Murray to turn another coach.

I will wait and see, again picking my games. The media are doing a great selling job but this team is a few retirements away from needing a good 3-6 callups to outperform veterans. I don’t expect Montreal to stink next year, Toronto might get Luongo which would settle that position, so how is this team going to get home ice?

Who knows. Murray is apparently a genius though and should have been GM of the year for delivering a mediocre product that again got bounced in round one.

5 years and counting of excuses, coach changes and straw men and moving the goalposts and not one hard look at whether Murray can do the job. Must be nice to be born in Shawville, you never have to answer any questions!

  4. Bobby Goodman says:

Pierre, I am with you, North Americans and Canadians in particular want it more. We grow up with sticks/skates and dreaming about playing in the Stanley Cup, they grow up kicking a round ball around and biting team “members” in goal celebrations! Many Euro’s are happy it is over so they can enjoy their summers off. Karlie is certainly one of them. Hell, I thought he was going to swap spit with Lundquist after the game. It is very sad to have the media simply toe the line for fear of offending. Perpetuate the Mass Hypnosis and Contribute to the Myth. Create Gods, everyone will buy in. The super saturation of number 11 and having to listening to the Alfie chant 3 times every game makes it easier to understand the Reverand Jimmy Jones and poisoned Kool Aid incident. Even those who are die hard Karlie fans have to concede he vanished in the playoffs! Hell, he has been gone for 5 weeks! He didn’t get a single assist in the post season! In tough games, he simply disapears. Really and truly, did anyone see him skate HARD with the puck on his stick this series? The lunacy continues with the latest report card. The only way to accurately report on a players peformance is to set expectations early and compare them with actual results. If that is fair, did anyone expect Smith to score 15 goals along with his very physical play (and he didn’t play with Turris and Spezza). But, his role is now in question should Ottawa reacqire Kelly (the very guy that was “sacrificed” to allow for the “rebuild”. Now, how does that make any sense? Everyone expected Foligno to score 15 goals and he played with offensive stars! The Android scored goals only when he played with Spezza who coincidentally centered Michalek, Heatley and Alfredsson when they all had their very best years in the NHL! Coincidence? Konopka who was a bum all year picking his fights, taking stupid penalties is now a darling. Bums like: the Missing Klink, Daisey the Air Rifle, O’myGod-Brien, the Dog, Condra and Butler are solid role players…that’s right, and their roles are Bums. They are not the Future. But Maclean played them. Da Costa got over 20 games so did Rund’sbad. Why? Butler played 60…why? Did Maclean bring Silferberg over from Sweden? I would suggest he doesn’t keep an eye on the SEL at all nor does he give a damn. But les Freres Murrays did. They were the ones who insisted he be incerted in the lineup. And, why wouldn’t someone risk their job to ask the Coach or GM why Stone sat after he got a beautiful assist in the one and ony game he played? Why wouldn’t Hoffman or Petersson get the same opportunity? WHY NOT ASK? I love what I have seen from Zibby but is he really going to make the team better next year having scored only 5 goals in a soft boy’s league? Murray fluked out with Maclean. His only asset are his soft skills. He pulled a team and the dressing together that was greatly divided by one of the other 5 coaches in the last 5 years, Cory Clouston. The media loved…

  5. Dennis_w says:

It’s full on hate and xenophobia time.

    Visitor,

Weren’t you supposed to stay asleep till the sens made the finals? You’re on every other site ripping Spezza a new one but not here. Why?

    Bobby,’

All I can say is that the wisest thing you’ve ever said on here is “when you hate you hate”.

  6. Dennis_w says:

    Visitor,

I just knew that you’d make a sudden reappearance. You just live to wallow in sens misery. This season was surprising by any measure, but somehow it’s a been a disaster according to you. You were in full glee in October when you thought the sens would be a bottom feeder. Remember the chants of Andersieve? Now it’s Silverdud. Does anyione hate this team more than this guy?

It’s just a matter of time before the hater crawls out from under his rock and you guys will have company.

  7. Bobby Goodman says:

Thanks buddy. You and many here have said a lot of things that are inteligent/wise. I wont always agree but neither will I call the comments dumb. I do hate, I hate stupidity. I also hate star making machinery and I really hate how so many can be so easily manipulated. I won’t support decisions that do not put the team in the best position to win games and we saw it happen all year long. I will call out the bad moves. I will also introduce what I think may make the team that much better and more competitive. I will say if I think a move was a dumb one. I will remain confounded why a guy who was 4th in the league in scoring and led his team in the post season still gets criticized. In any other city he would be celebrated. I didn’t like Bulter paying 60 games, Rund’sbad and Da Costa over 20. This team was really tight all year and the dressing room harmonious. But when a player goes down, the “Organization” (Murray) doesn’t go with Butler got Butlered or The Missing Klink they go with a kid fresh from Junior hockey over a guys who were in the trenches all year long. What do you think it did to the players in that dressing room? If you think it did nothing, you haven’t played team sports. Then the kid who dressed for a game they won, sits for a kid who didn’t want to try his game against NHLers, didn’t want to be here all year, flew over from Europe and had only one day of rest. What do you think the players on the team thought about that? I will tell you, it pissed them off! The Team lost, he stunk, yet, he played again. Do you think Stone or Silfverberg put the team in a better position to win than Butler, Klink, Petersson or Hoffman? Did Gilroy make sense? Did sitting down Spezza make sense. Were you pleased with Karlsson. Yep, my hate makes sense but all the other observations didn’t. You see Mike, you and some others miss the point. I care and care far too much and that is why I will never accept stupidity. I wont celebrate a GM who failed for 5 years or bums or trades that make little sense. Actually, you and others like you are far better off because you don’t care as much and will celebrate anything and everything. I simply cannot.

  8. Mike8888 says:

    Yes Pierre,
Everyone on the Senator’s sucks. That includes all of the coaching staff, management and all current players and any prospects they have in the system now, and in the future. Also, everyone on team 1200 is stupid and they suck too.

    Bobby,
Most of MacLean’s and Murray’s decisions suck and should be criticized. Yes, I know everyone has their opinion.

All in all, I personally am looking forward to the draft, July 1st free agency, and next season. The Sen’s appear to have a promising future. I’m pretty angry with Bryan Murray though. He had the nerve to have the Sen’s make the playoffs in a rebuilding year. Imagine that.

  9. Dennis_w says:

    Right on Mike.

    Bobby,

I can’t for the life of me understand why you see eye-to-eye with Visitor. You and everyone else predicted that Ottawa would finish at the bottom in this first rebuilding year.

Not only did they make the playoffs, they came within a hair of knocking off the number one seed. But you guys say that everyone from management, the coaches and players are all garbage and need to be replaced.

And you really want anyone to take you guys seriously?

  10. Bobby Goodman says:

If Murray was responsible for the team making the playoffs this year, was he responsible and were you upset with him for not making the post season last year? Were you happy with Murray the last 4 years Mikey? Were you a fan of the the migration from young to old? Did you like Paddock, Hartsburg, Eli Wilson and Clouston? Did you support giving 10 million to Kovalev? Is Gonchar worth 5 million a year? Is Philips worth the 4 million dollar “home town” discount? Did you enjoy watching: Lapointe, Robitaille, Smith, Richardson, Picard, Campoli, Commodore, Comrie, Stillman, Bell, Sutton, Cullen, Gilmour, Obrien, Butler, Da Costa, Wierchoch, Klink, $5m Pascal Leclaire, Auld, Konopka? Did you endorse letting Volchenkov go for free? If you think this version of the team ‘is the future”, great. But Mikey, I do not. If I asked you before the playoffs if Konopka should be back, you would have (along with every body else) answered absolutely not. Do you think the the future is bright with guys like Klink, Butler (who were left out of the lineup for two who never played a single game in the NHL, that’s what the management team think of their value), Obrien, Condra, Gilmour, the old/slow/soft defence corps Philips, Gonchar and Kuba? Does the “Oates-like” Da Costa represent the future? If you are all excited about Silfverberg, I should caution you to wait and see, afterall, Rundblad also “dominated” in the Swedish Elite League didn’t he. But, he and Zibby continue to get the advanced billing setting expectations soaring (which is dangerous and unfair). Zibby scored all of 5 goals in he SEL last year! Is he going to help the Sens next year? I suppose Mike you endorsed Klink with God and Turris; Condra/Butler/Android/Stone/Silfvergerg with Spez and Milan; Winchester centering Foligno; Obrien centering…anybody; not uniting 3 who would form a formidable bona fide 3rd line Smith, Neil and Android; playing Da Costa and Rundblad over 20 games, Butler 60, Hoffman and Petersson one each; Gilmour for Lee trade and disrupting the dressing room, bench and chemistry playing untested/unproven 19 and 21 year in the post season; sitting Spezza who carried the team the last 17 games of the year last year when God was hurt, led the team in scoring again this year in spite of playing a man short all year, led the team in the post season in scoring and was plus 2 (but remains the only focus of criticism). You have nothing to say about Karlie’s play? Not a single assist in the post season (Konopka played 100 less minutes and got 2 assits) and not a single point or shot on net in the final game? Are you another who thinks God was the teams best player with his 2 points in 5 games and -3? Yep Mike, everyone has their opinion. Mine is forged from what I see, others are forged for them. Those who are critical of me validate the theory that the power of accurate observation is considered cynicism by those who do not have it.
