King Eric takes a seat

- November 22nd, 2010

Just posted this on ottawasun.com. Thought it was worth putting here:

Erik Karlsson will be a spectator Monday night.

The Senators defenceman is well enough to suit up against the Los Angeles Kings at Scotiabank Place, but coach Cory Clouston wants Karlsson to sit anyway, which means blueliner David Hale will play.

While Karlsson has the flu, he could play, but Clouston wants the youngster to watch and try to get his game together. He is minus-5 this season and took a boatload of bad penalties on the club’s long and frustrating road trip last week.

Hale has been a healthy scratch for four straight games.

“It’s perfect time for (Karlsson) to step back, refocus and get his game back on track as well,” said Clouston.

There will be plenty of changes.

Goalie Pascal Leclaire will make his first start in the club’s net since a 6-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Nov. 11th. He replaced Brian Elliott last Wednesday in Raleigh and allowed three goals on 12 shots in another lopsided loss.

Clouston has also changed all of the club’s forward line combinations.

Here’s a look:

Forwards
Kelly-Spezza-Alfredsson
Michalek-Regin-Kovalev
Foligno-Fisher-Shannon
Ruutu-Winchester-Neil

Defence
Phillips-Gonchar
Kuba-Hale
Carkner-Campoli

Clouston said he’s changing the combinations “to shake things up a little” on all the forward lines.

“It’s definitely broke. There is some familiarity with the pairings we’ve got. Peter (Regin) has played well with Alex (Kovalev). (Jason) Spezza and (Daniel) Alfredsson have played well together. (Nick) Foligno, (Mike) Fisher and (Ryan) Shannon, a year ago was a very good line for us,” said Clouston.

for once I agree with Bobby, CC needed to sit #65… who has been playing like crap. He is young yes, but there is only so much rope he can have. I like Hale, I think he had played better than Karlsson when he was in the lineup.

  2. tuna99 says:

CC is going for it, Iembarassing EK a bit and giving LeClaire a chance when the team needs a win in a huge way, a chance for Leclaire to get back up huge and give his team a chance to believe in him again. CC has set the table perfectly, so much is on the line for this game.

This a guarantee win night, they are winning this one for Luc Richardson.

  3. Sen4Ever says:

Finally, Leclaire is back. Hope he will be in next game regardless of the results. We need him to win and get confidant again. We will go nowhere without him.

  4. PaV says:

Well……… King Eric took a seat and Hale played well………. I wonder if CC is going to continue to sit Eric or bring him back in to the line up?

The game was good yesterday….. *I* think LeClarie played well and did not have a chance on either of the goals, but I am sure I will be told otherwise ;-)

Wasn’t the best game, but it was a win, and after 3 losses, 2 of them horrible, its good to see that they bounced back.

    Bring on Dallas!

Good game last night. Hey Don, your comment in cheapseats about Spezza wanting to show the kind of chemistry he could have had with Kopitar was hilarious.

  6. colin says:

nice of clouston to pick on the 19 year old while he lets the vets get away with bad play all year. #71 has required a sit down for the last month.

  7. PaV says:

@Colin – #71 has been called out. He is snake bitten. His effort is there, he is just not scoring. King Eric on the other hand is playing like crap and has what…. 5 or 6 trips to the penatly box in the last 3 games?

I was at the game in the nosebleeds and loved it. I pigged on on beer and food that shuold clog my arteries (brain is already clogged). I loved the game and had a ball and was thrilled with the victory! The Sens beat a good team. It looked from my vantage point (Mars) that the LA goalie might have been fooled by the blade of Kovalev’s stick coming off and the puck being shot at the same time. Is that a possibility? Pascal was great facing 30 to shots to Ottawa’s 19 and I suspect he will be between the pipes aganst Dallas. The lines shuggled throughout the game and may have been a good thing; Kelly looked out of place on the wing. Fish does look hurt, although he had some great shifts, he is not his physical self. Good game by Hale; he will never be great but he wont hurt you either…good on him! Is something wrong with Philips? This is the 3rd game in a row without registering a single hit; he and Kelly were the only ones who ended up in the minus column. Good win boys and bring it against Dallas!

…. my comment has been waiting moderation since 738am!

I just checked out some comments to the Sun’s Sports articles on line and the language by some is colourful to say the least; I don’t you have said a foul word in your life Pav…what gives mon ami?

  11. PaV says:

@bobby – I am not sure, I do not think its the words, I think its the length of the post mate. I am sure if I used words that the filter does not agree with, it would pick it up, but I think the longer the post the more chance it will have to be held until released. Good to hear that you enjoyed yourself at the game. LA is a fast team but we managed to keep pace… but Bobby, you need to tell us, did you stand and salute ‘Dasiey’ when he scored his 1000 point? ;-)

  12. BGoody says:

Daisey, couldn’t score 1000 points if he played against 12 year old hockey players for 10 years…I did stand to celebrate Holiday on Ice though! :-)

  13. PaV says:

Bobby, sorry I thought Dasiey was Kovi! Classic. Anyways, well done at giving him a standing ovation.

  14. Mike8888 says:

Hey Bobby. Are you one of the ones who paid $24,000 for dinner with Mike and Carrie?

  15. BGoody says:

To answer your question Mikey………..nope! I would rather have a beer with you guys than eat and 20 course meal with “Mikarrie”. Nothing against them, but we have nothing in common: don’t really find them interesting in anyway (love to have their money though), I don’t kill dear with a bow and arrow (don’t kill anything) and do not like Country Music fan; “Jesus take the Wheel” is not on my iPod!

  16. PaV says:

Speaking of which, I have a set of tickets to tonights game (300L) that I need to get rid of, anyone interested?

  17. PaV says:

    Any perdictions tonight?

  18. Mike8888 says:

    Ottawa 6, Dallas 2

  19. PaV says:

    @Mike8888 that bold huh?

  20. Mike8888 says:

I hope so Pav. Maybe they can go on a roll like last year. They’re too close to the Leafs right now.

  21. PaV says:

Mike8888 – Got 2 spare tickets tonight. You interrested?

  22. Visitor - Pierre says:

    4-2 Senators tonight.

Glad Karlsson got benched, way too coky for a 1 year experience player who has accomplished nothing at the NHL level.
Clouston should bench Phillips, Fisher, almost anyone and everyone that is undeperforming.
Shake it up, get rid of the complacency!

  23. Mike8888 says:

I can’t Pav. I have a game myself. Maybe some other time for sure.

  24. PaV says:

    Mike888 no worries mate.

@VIS – I agree with Fisher, also cause he is hurt and will need the rest. But Phillip is just lacking confidence that is it. I (and I am taking my own life at risk here as he is my gf’s favorite player) think that they should bench Nicky, yes his effort level is there and even after being called out he is still not playing like the way he can.

  25. BGoody says:

Really my friends, at the risk of being accused of a hate crime, can anyone tell me that Daisey the Air Rifle doesn’t hurt the team. If there is an opportunity offensively and the puck goes to him, it is lost. He cannot retrieve a puck from the corner or beat anyone one on one. He is slow and cannot keep up. He couldn’t break a pane of glass with his shot and he is on a line with Fisher. Again I ask, Cory baby…what is the rational? What do you hope to accomplish…get Fish out of his slump?; relieve Fisher from the heavy lifting?; intimidate the opposition?; support the puck possession game?; Fisher needs a set up man?; Fisher needs a finisher…what? I counted 7 times he was on his butt last night. He is God awful. Again last night the line combinations was a game of 52 card pick up. I would suggest that Ruutu and Winchester are the slowest skaters in the NHL and Foligno isn’t far off (although I love his heart). L’Artiste, is the laziest slug I have ever seen. I watched a 42 year old Recci get his “1500″ point and he was blessed with far less talent but he does have a heart. At 42 he puts an unbelievable effort in game in and game out…unlike Kovalev. I liked the way Regin and Shannon worked together…it too bad they didn’t have someone like a Butler to play with them. Where ever the team puts Kovalev, it is bad. Last game, Clouston had Kovalev on the ice to protect a lead with less than two minutes to go…again, Cory baby, please explain?

  26. Mike8888 says:

Bobby, I agree with a lot of what you say but I diagree about Ruutu. He’s one of the few Sens who comes to play every game and atcually makes body contact. Also, if he’s so bad, surely the Finish olympic team wouldn’t have selected him. I hope they resign him.

  27. Mike8888 says:

Hey Don or Bruce. How long does it take to moderate a comment. What do you guys do all day? :)

  28. BGoody says:

Mikey, you are caught between a rock and a hard place with the GF and Philps thing. I feel for ya. I have to wonder what is going on there though; this is the 3rd game in a row where he had no hits and again, minus one. The team seems to die in the 3rd periods; I think after 15 minutes last night, they had all but one shot on net and were outshot 26 – 19m for the game (the game before, when they won, they were outshot 31 – 19).

  29. PaV says:

@Mike8888 – its not them moderating the room, they would have a webmaster or someone like that to release the comments.

@bobby – was at the game. Only a few players showed up to play – Alfie – Spez – Machalek(sp) an LeClarie.

  30. Mike8888 says:

Pav, I think they do moderate it.

  31. BGoody says:

Aint it the truth Pav. Spez had the puck on his stick most of the night. If there is anyone who pads their stats, it is Kovalev. His effort is nil unless he thinks he has an opp to score. He does not come back at all. When he has the puck, he is going so slow, he is easy to cover yet he tries to beat people all on his own and often needs to be the same guy several times because he is going so slow. What has happened to a give and go game. What has happened to the forcheck and pressure all over the ice…all game? Haile is doing a find job back there. Kuba is standing still. There will have to get some energy and reaise their intensity level against Pitt and Toronto (please). Noting wrong with bringing up some young blood from the farm just to give them a glimpse of what it is like in the show and inspire the team a little bit.

  32. PaV says:

@bobby, I am telling you mate, Kuba does not know how to hit. Yeah he isn’t a physical D, but hit someone for gods sake. Shannon wasn’t at this best last night. Kovi is well…Kovi, the fact that he dived to save the puck going out of the zone blew my very little mind away! I like Hale, but it looks like King Eric is going to be back in the lineup, which means he will be a heatly scratch. If i was CC, I would sit Kuba.

  33. Visitor - Pierre D. says:

    bobby,

I take it you didn’t bid for the street hockey game with Winchester, Campoli and Elliott at the silent auction? ;)

2-1 loss…well, Karlsson SHOULD help with the offense vs. Pittsburgh and Toronto. The question is, whom starts which game?
Scarily enough, they could lose both these games and find themselves two or three games under .500…

  34. Mike8888 says:

    Let the rebuilding begin,,,,please.

  35. Kevin F. says:

Well, been very busy, usual hockey obsession has been sidetracked by high school football fun. Let’s see now Leafs get a goal from a terrible missed call, a weeks fodder on cross country talk shows. Rules must be changed!!!! Sens benefit from two blown calls in the same game ,,,,oh well they even out, let’s move on. Darcy Tucker/Tie Domi did something much worse.
