An ugly loss

- February 1st, 2014

The Senators took one on the chin in the Battle of Ontario.
It was closer than the 6-3 final but that is the way it finished.
The Senators seem to have a tough time beating the Toronto Maple Leafs in a game that matters. Phil Kessel had the hat-trick. Chris Neil tried to lead the way with two goals and an assist.
The league will have to decide if it wants to take action on Nazem Kadri.
His hit on Cody Ceci was pretty blatant. There has to be action by the league I think. Kadri is a repeat offender. There should be something in my opinion. Don’t think the league will agree. There was no call. We’ll see.

Ceci:”I just kind of showed my back abit hoping (Kadri would) slow up…then they scored right on the play.It was a tough play for me”
Thought it should have been a penalty, but hey hopefully Naz has a nice long career and when he has a video tribute everyone will laugh and clap the Ottawa fans have when Alfie broke Tucker’s shoulder blade.

Bruce, are you not going to say a anything about Karly? Don’t you see a pattern here? When the Sens play a tough team and a hard game, he vanishes…actually, that isn’t true, he took the opportunity on HNIC last night to demonstrate to all viewers nationally, what he and his game is all about.

He was limited to 23 minutes but really should have been sent to the showers. He was afraid and again he never made an effort but 19 year old kids on both teams certainly did! Ceci and Reilly competed hard and were all to willing to carry the puck coast to coast; Reilly did it a few times! Karly didn’t want the puck.

Karly had 2 shots, turned the puck over a multitude of times, missed on most passes had 5 give aways and offered a free pass to all in his own end and this isn’t worth mentioning? But he was physical; his 4 hits (he’s a killer) tied him with Cowen and only one less than Greening (the other killer Zzzz had 5 “hits”). Karly had one of his typical take aways, standing still watching closely as Cowen and Lupol battled for the puck and when it came loose Karly picked it up.

The team will play the Penguins and Blues in the next few days, any guesses how number 65 will perfrom? I know Methot, the guy who sat for 2 games because he bruised the DAC’s ego, will! He is the type of player you win with…Karly is not. He should be ashamed of himself but I suspect he doesn’t and slept very well last night thank you very much. Why you guys are so willing to write articles pointing out Spezza’s flaws but completely ignore Karlsson is bewildering, shameless and way too obvious.

The DAC had Zzzz on the ice with the man advantage for more time than Ryan, the teams leading goal scorer, Spezza, and Turris. Why? Was it for his creativity, speed, excellent shot, goals/assists…..physicality (he registered 5 “hits”)?

Spezza set up Zzz for a freebie all alone but he can’t catch a pass. He set up Ryan and Michalek twice, and they couldn’t bury it (one in particular with Michalek when he was 12 feet in front of the net and he shot 6 feet wide).

If anyone doubts that the weekest link on this hockey club are the defence are watching the same game I do. Speed kills, not meat and speed only works if the player has a heart/soul and a wee bit of courage. Wiercoch, Gryba and Cowen are s l o w. Ryan and Spezza were both minus 3 last night because of frightful mismanagement of the puck. Murray can go on TV and talk about the youth and how great the team is but before the loss last night, the hockey club was out of a playoff position and now they are further away. Is this what we are now supposed to celebrate….a chance to perhaps make the post season?

I don’t know if it is his mastery at manipulatin or the desperation of the fan base to celebrate….something/anything…..but I can’t get excited about a team than hovers around .500, allows 176 goals (3rd most) with only 8 in the 30 team league with worse records.

  3. Bobby Goodman says:

Does anyone else wonder why Conacher gets short shifted ever night? is it because he doesn’t bleed for the team? Could it be because he doesn’t earn points? Conacher is all heart and soul and he gets points (only 4 behind Zzzz) and does he hurt the hockey club; last night he was zero in the +/- while Zzzz was -2. I compare the two because they have played together, both play up front and are relatively new to the league.

Last night Conacher played all of 9:56 (better I guess than the less than 6 last game), I say he “played all of it” because he gives it all every second he is on the ice!!! It doesn’t earn him any favors though. He should play on the periphery, hang high in the slot, wait for others to go into a corner first and never win a one on one battle if he wants more icetime! Isn’t that the way Zzz plays. Last night Zzzz got 5 more minutes of ice-time than Conacher and you have to wonder why. If Zzzz is thought to be more of a playmaker, the numbers don’t bear that out, Conacher has more in his limited role playing primarily with the the 4th line.

Conacher is not the best player on the team, but he is infinitely better than Zzzz yet, he takes a back seat. Zzzz will always get more ice-time and the “nice” assignments. The fact that Conacher is +20 better than Zzzz shouldn’t even matter…well it obviously, it doesn’t matter.

It certainly wouldn’t surprise me if Spezza is gone on or before the trade deadline (I would bet LA). Where he goes wouldn’t matter but I hope it happens. The way he is treated here (aside from earning a King’s ransom) by the media and Organization is disgusting. The move would be good for him and the hockey club (depending on what Murray gets in return).

It isn’t interesting that Mac, Turris and Ryan were collectively -7. Would anyone care to offer why? Did they suddenly forget that they’re all well in the plus column?

If you were Spezza, Ryan or Turris (anyone on the team for that matter) you have to wonder what they think when they see Zzzz on the PP and getting more minutes than them? Really and truly, can someone/anyone explain to me why?

Isn’t it funny how the HNIC can swith on the fly. After gushing embarrassingly over Karly, they dropped him and went nuts for Methot! Don’t believe any of the nonsense that Methot was struggling this year, he wasn’t at all. At one point he was minus 8 because he played with Karly. Methot is now +2 while Karly’s numbers keep getting worse.

I noticed Tarasenko got his 18th goal yesterday; I wanted the GM to draft the kid who at 17 was runner up for Rooke of the Year in the KHL. The Murray’s liked Rund’sbad much better. While Tarasenko stars in the NHL, Rund’sbad flounders. Silfverberg now has 6 goals in 30 games this year. What is the common them among the Swedes the Murrays draft/acquire? Charmin soft!

I’d like to know why Murray says the team could win a Stanley Cup in ’16 (I know he doesn’t truly belive it). Do you?

  4. ChokerHater says:

So a player admits that “:”I just kind of showed my back abit hoping (Kadri would) slow up”
and then admits it, that he intentionally turned, and also he thought of staying down longer even though he wasn’t hurt, and the league is supposed to suspend a guy for that. I doubt it, not if they read what he said after. That is a chicken play, done by a rookie, and the coach and management should be having some pretty strong words with him.

How many Ottawa goalies have the Leafs ruined?

Looks like PK had quite an overtime yesterday, Habs didn’t win but he sure looks like he’s ready for the Olympics

  5. ChokerHater says:

That was one hell of a display tonight
    DISGUSTING
    up 2-0 and lose 6-3
so the Leafs scored 6 goals while you scored 1
Great goalie, and a great display by a “suspect” Norris trophy winner
Anyone who wants to make smart remarks about Kessel should probably hold their collective tongues!
    This team sucks

  6. OD99 says:

    WEll that sucked…

Taking a 1-0 lead off a Neil wrister and then coming out and playing hard enough to get a 2-0 lead should have been enough. All of this despite the 4-0 penalty calls favouring the Leafs…brutal in the Senators zone once again and when the Leafs started pushing and pinching the D the Senators gave the puck away for chance after chance.

The Gryba give-away to hand Kessel his hatty was infuriating – no need to make a soft pass like that back behind the net and it was just too easy from there.

The unexpected 2nd goal by Neil after the commercial break should have had the team lock it down but they kept playing run and gun against a team with more fire power and it killed them. Will be interesting to see how the team responds after this one but it had to be crushing.

I was hoping someone was going to get Kadri after another one of his predatory hits but I guess the Sens knew they would just get another penalty for it. Hopefully next game he can get what is coming to him.

Leafs look good though – they are certainly on a roll now and with the Habs in free-fall I don’t see them falling out of the top 3. Too bad.

At this stage I think Columbus is showing they are a play-off team as well and then it will be a dog fight with the other 6 or 7 teams in contention.

  7. KevinF says:

Ottawa player #5 says he turns his back to slow down a fore checker and the forechecker is a predator? He knew he was coming , he squares up and takes the hit, a hockey play! Nope turn and consider staying down according to player #5. The best part was cry face Zach leaving Lupul to punch Kadri boom tie game, as succinctly pointed out by Anderson Then the Adams trophy winner loses control of his team and they hand over the win, gracias!

  8. Mike8888 says:

I suppose we can’t complain too much about the non call on the Kadri hit after the non call on the Alfredsson hit so many years ago. They were both obvious penalties. That being said, I’m not sure there were 2 referees on the ice for the Alfredsson hit. How 2 referees can miss that call is unbelievable. I didn’t read the quote from Ceci that he turned his back on purpose but it certainly didn’t look that way on the replay. It looked like Kadri had a lot of time to not nail the kid from behind. I too was suprised at the lack of pay back from the Sens. Anyway, the Kessel trade now looks like a pretty even deal now. Kessel is quite the player, and he always seems up for the battle of Ontario.

I hope we can win at least one of the next 2 games, but it will be tough.

  9. Bobby Goodman says:

I’d love to know who the “winger” was the Sens tried to acquire? If the papers describe it as a minor trade, we have to believe it was going to be insignificant. If that is acurate, why pursue a “smaller type deal” when there are resources in Bingo? Why not promote some who have demonstrated for a couple of years or more they can score goals. Far more than Zibanisbad!

Sadly, expectedly, no one wants to talk about Karlsson (everyone got the memo and its not good for business). The best the papers can do, is ignore him which begs the question…why? I would think a media man would want to distinguish himself from the others by reporting the facts. How silly am I? You would think that fans would know good from from bad by watching a game but that’s not the case now is it. If you tell a lie, tell it often and say it with conviction, eventually it is accepted as fact.

Methot is now a media darling (again), he’s being hailed as a “shut down” guy; he always was “an effective shut down guy”! Murray thinks the defence are young, indeed they are young! He thinks their big, absolutely they’re big! He adds that they are mobile, no Bryan, they aren’t mobile nor are they quick. Methot is mobile and quick, so is Karly (but what good is his qickness if it is only used to exit the zone after “taking the puck away” from the opposition). Most of the time he is static and watches.

Certainly the defence could be better but are they getting the best advice, are they getting the best coaching? When there is pressure in their end, why would both defencemen be behind the net and offer the “net front” as a present to the opposition? If this hockey club is going to continue allowing a multitude of goals scored against them (176, 3rd most in the league) are the young defencemen entirely responsible? There have been and always will be defencemen in the league who aren’t fleet of foot and played well. Certainly the Sens big 3 can play…better. If the hockey club has to score 4 goals/gm to win consistently, victories will be had to come by! Shouldn’t the DAC and DAACs be held responsible. Shouldn’t the media ask about that too?

No one will report that the Sens are 9th in the 30 team league. No one will write that they have allowed a gazillion goals with no solution in sight. No on wants to report they will, in all probability, miss the post season again for the 3rd time in the last 7 years because of all the changes/rebuilds (Vermette is still scoring goals, he got his 20th the other day). No one wants to write that the team has one good line and they were all acquired. Who are the ones Murray drafted that offer hope for the future? Zibanisbad, Stone, Pageau, Greening, Condra, Da Costa, Grant, Obrien? Brown and Potvin are quick to introduce the notion that 14 of the players on the ice the other day were drafted by the Orgnaization, but, do they help win games?

I watch the Jets and they entertain! They compete. Ottawa doesn’t.

  10. Bobby Goodman says:

I’m not convinced “THE BIG MATCHUP” will be Spezza and Crosby…do you?

Spezza has 39 points in 50 games versus Crosby who has 75 in 55. Is this a fair matchup? Is it a matcup because they both play center? If that is the case, why wouldn’t Smith or Da Costa be named. Is Spezza now teh #1 center for the Sens (Dumb and Dumber often remind us he is not)? Isn’t Crosby the number one center for his team and isn’t Turris the number one center for the Sens or does that matter? Isn’t Turris’ 42 points a better matchup than Spezza’s meazley 39?! Should Spezza be matched-up in tonights game with Malkin? Or, is that notion…just plain silly.

Is Spezza an island and can he be successful alone? Can he “matchup” playing with two others who have yet to collectively score 20 goals and are -35?! Will the public look at that matchup and make the call when the inevitable happens, he failed? Why aren’t his wingers matched up with Crosby’s wingers? If a better “matchup” is Spezza and Malkin, how do Michalek and Zzzz matcup with Neal and Jokinen? Michalek and Zzzz have 25 assists in 100 games this year, Neal and Jokinen have 48 in 89! Kunitz alone has 3 more assists than Zzz and Michalek in 55 games! Does this all really matter?

Wouldn’t better matcups be the Sens top point getter versus the Pen’s; the top goal scorers; members of the 3rd line (individually/collectively)?

Does the Sun truly believe that Spezza, playing with Zzz and Michalek, favourably matches up with Crosby and his wingers (or Malkin and his)? If they do, why? If, as I suspect they certainly don’t think the lines matchup, how the hell can one player?

A fun matchup might have been Karly and Letang if he was playing but he is ill and will not dress. Perhaps Orpik versus Methot, Olli Matta and Cody Ceci (two 19 year olds).

The Teams don’t matchup, Ottawa has 58 points to the Pens 78 (4th best)! Ottawa has allowed as many goals as the Pens have scored, 176 (3rd worst)! How the hell can Spezza matchup with Crosby, the best player in the world, playing on a world class team, with world class players and a world class winger? Unless of course, Don thinks Zzz and Michalek are world class? Perhaps he thinks all the others he has played with this year to be world class? What about the ones (again, there were many different combinations) last game?

If the Sun is hell bent for leather to scribe a “Big Matchup” shouldn’t it be a little bit realistic and fair? I really like the notion of a matchup, but it has to be somewhat legitimate…don’t you think?

  11. Bobby Goodman says:

I didn’t like the hit either Mikey, but they happen too often and as much as I blame the hitter, the hittee needs to assume some respnsibilty. The only time I would ever turn my back on a player along the wall was if I was very close to it! It is that dreaded 5 or 6 foot gap that can lead to a major and sometimes catestrophic injury. Ceci did indeed say he turned his back when he saw #93 coming and it was a bad move, a dangerous move. As far as what Annika did many years ago, who cares…that was then this is now. There have been many bad hits, irresponsible hits even some others delivered by Ottawa Senators. In particular, Neal decapitated a soft/slick Buffalo Sabre and put him on the shelf for months with a severe concussion; he was never the same (but was good enough for a gazzillion dollars from Burke to sit).

It is funny how things go, how do we measure the Kessel trade? Do we measure it on what the teams looks like today? Or do we compare the players involved regardless. In my view, the latter is the way to go for the simple reason I don’t think the dumbass move by a GM after the fact should count.

We as fans aren’t privy to what really goes on behind the scenes but from my perch, Seguin was aways a star emerging. In the playoffs last year for the Bruins, he was always making a effort. He skated miles but the numbers just didn’t come. Perhaps he was mis-managed in Bean Town, I dont’ know and will never know, bet all the signs were there, he had star potential. This year in Dallas, he is what I thought he would/could be. If you also look at how Dougie Hamilton is developing in Boston, I think that the trade wasn’t necessarily the best for Toronto.

Kessel is 6′, 200 lb and 26 years old. He may be the “second” best skater in the NHL. Kessel is having an amazing year and an amazing career. This year he has 30 goals and 31 assists and is -1. The knock on him was always the notion that he doesn’t always show up and can be intimidated. The players themselves have said it altough personally, I don’t know how legitimate that is anymore! That can’t be said of Seguin, however he was said to be imature (can you imagine, an immature19 year old?) and that he liked to party. He is only 22, 6′, 1″ and 185. He, like Kessel, loves the puck and can carry it effectively at top speed. He is very fast but not as fast as Kessel, but truthfully, who the hell is. No matter what anyone may say, I have never seen speed and quickness like Kessel. Both lead their their respective teams in scoring. Seguin has 24 goals and 30 assists for 54 points and is plus 9 (silly stat, I know). I love both players, but with Seguin’s age, comparable skillset, his willingness to be more physical, coupled with an emerging star defenceman in the hulking 20 year old (Canadian) defenceman Hamilton, I would say that the trade wasn’t Lord Burke’s finest moment (of course, he really hasn’t had very many).

  12. PaV says:

Wow go away for a few days and the rants are in full swing.

Mike / OD – the HABS lost 2 games in a row.

  13. Bobby Goodman says:

But….I thought you were a Sens fan? Aren’t you concerned at all about where they stand (6 points behind the dreadful Habs and 8 points behind your now beloved Leas)?

Shouldn’t you be concerned about “your” Captain? He is a member of “your”Team isn’t he? I suspect your opinion of him is absolutely committed to….whatever the Sun may say!!! Don’t you think the team should prevent more goals? Or are you happy with the trend?

Do you now like Methot again? What do you think happened to “Karly” on Saturday night and what are your expectations tonight against the Pens? How do you think he will perform against the Blues and the Bruins? Do you care to offer a take or are you going to wait for someone from the media to comment and then be heard? Do you agree with Zzzz getting more icetime than Conacher and if so, why? Do you think he shoud get more PP time than Turris, Spezza and Ryan? Can you summon the courage to venture out of your comfort zone (crapping on the Habs) and comment? Say something for God sakes man. What’s your take on the Kessel trade? Beyond the celebration of all things Sens (except Spezza and I suspect now Conacher) and your hatred of Montreal (and I’m a hater) can you comment on anything at all. What do you think of the weather? You know of course that we are only offering our opinions here and like AHs we all have one…but damn it son….have an opinion!!!! Have your opinion…you may even find it liberating! Stand on your own son. You don’t need to be propped up by friends…it is getting embarrassing:

“OD, Mikey…Kev (anybody)….the Habs lost two in a row….are ya amped up like me…does it sustain you as much as it does me?????? WooHoo!!!! Yes…..yes, yes, yes the Sens are losing and will probably miss the playoffs, but I don’t care, the Habs are only 6 points ahead of “us” but more importantly…I saw someone, who saw someone else who may or may not have been somewhere at the same time as someone who actually touched an Ottawa Senator!!!!!!!!! Aw Paaaaaaav…………someone, please pass me a towel……”

  14. Visitor - Pierre D. says:

We got whipped. Karlsson is leading the league in defensemen scoring but no one is talking about him as a Norris winner. I wonder why? Could it be that he again and again fails to defend his net? I expect that he’ll be on the ice for two or three goals tonight but that will be shrugged off.

Yes, Phil Kessel is an extraordinary player. Yes, Burke gave a lot to get him but consider this. Kessel is only 26 years old and there are only two or three players that have scored as much as him the past few years, think Stamkos and Crosby/Ovechkin are the only ones.
Seguin is excellent but the Dallas stars aren’t threatening for a playoff spot. Jared Knight is in the manures and Dougie Hamilton saw limited ice time in last year’s playoffs. I think we can say that this was a fair trade. Burke got the Leafs a first line of Kessel, James van Rimesdyk for the forgotten Luke Schenn, the skilled Bozak and Lupul for scraps. He brought in Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner. And the Leafs are one of the top teams in the East!

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO BE A TOP TEAM IN THE EAST? That’s what I want to know from Bryan Murray. When are we going to have a top 5 scorer on team? When are we going to have a team full of fast young players? We certainly have that in Turris to a lesser degree Ryan. We were told this was a three year rebuild but we’re going to miss the playoffs again! Why? When is Murray going to deliver a winner? I keep hearing he bullt the Ducks but when is he going to build the Senators into a champion? Eugene Melnyk says that the team will win a Cup in the next two years but that sounds like magic thinking.
I think this is a mediocre team with a mediocre general manager, mediocre defencemen outside of Methot, Ceci and Gryba.

If the team misses the playoffs will questions be asked of the coach? How about of Craig Anderson, who has allowed four goals per game in 15+ games? How about of Erik Karlsson who avoids the media and hard questions like the plague?

  15. PaV says:

That was one hell of a game to watch. Fast paced, great goaltending and physical.

But this is what the rant will be:
Blah blah blah Karly was horrible
Blah blah blah Spezza was the best on the ice
Blah blah blah we only got a point because of Anderson

    When in reality:
    - DaCosta played awesome
    - EK was on his game
    - Spezza was invisible the whole game. The OT goal was due to him being on the ice.
    - Anderson had this best game of the season hands down

  16. Bobby Goodman says:

Pittsburgh “Steals”it? And, Spezza “lost it along the boards”!? Don, he never had it! Who moved it along the boards and, when it got to Spezza it was behind him and an easy “Steal” by the Penguin player!

I see the Sun published yet another Letter to the Editor today from yet another impressionable lemming who hates Spezza. You have to wonder why…well at least I wonder why. Spezza aparently “leaves it to his wingers”, is lazy and “coasts”. He’s been doing it for “7 years”! Spezza should make goal scorers out of the many he has played with this year. Only he has to create a goal scorer though.

Why Didn’t Turris make goal scorers out of Hoffman, Conacher, Zibanisbad or Michalek? If this moron watched the game last night, I wonder how many times he noticed the Captain setting up his mates but they couldn’t finish. How many times did they set up the Captain? Spezza had one “chance” when Zzz got him the puck by the left side of the crease….on a 180 degree angle!

The Letter writer wants Karly to be the Captain….alrightythen. I guess he was totally impressed with his game last night…most nights. Karly had 2 shots last night, turned the puck over many times, was awful on the PP and God awful in his own end. He missed on an opportunity that most would have scroed two goals on! As the so called QB on the PP, he wasted a lot of precious time holding on to the puck too long, making bad passes and turning it over. As I have said often this year, I wish he would move it soooooooner. Ray Ferarro certainly noticed!

The Sun says the Pens stole it and the other paper says the Pens didn’t have their legs…THEY DIDN’T HAVE THEIR LEGS????!!!! If they didn’t have their legs, God help any team when they do; the Pens fired 58 shots at Anderson! They dominated terror-torially! They completely dominated the hapless Sens in opportunities. The Sens…as a team…had only 2 Gva…BECAUSE THEY NEVER HAD THE PUCK! But, after reading both papers, you would never really know.

The headline Don, should have been “Anderson Steals One” (the single point the team…ahem…earned after 60 minutes).

Do you think the Team played well Don? If so, who impressed (aside from the obvious)? Did you think the Defence played well? If so, what did you like in particular? What about Karly; were you content with his 2 shots? How many rushes did he lead….5 on 5? What about Michalek and his no shots on net, is Spezza to blame for that too? I know you love Zzzz (he and Karly are now killers) but shouldn’t he bury some of the many chances he gets every game? What about his skating and ability to go around or through people? Did you count how many tmes the big slug was on his ass last night? Should Spezza make him a better skater?

Did you know that Couturier, the big Canadian kid I wanted Bryan to draft, now has 26 pts (9 & 17). Last night he got another assist and spent 5.5 minutes on the PK!

It is very sad what has happened to…

  17. Bobby Goodman says:

It is sad what has happened to simply reporting the news/sports. It use to be so, but now, there is always an agenda.

The Sens Captain, has 39 points compared to the celebrated first line members Turris and MacArthur who have 42 each. For the Fool, that is only 3 more. But, those two have 18 goals each and Ryan has 20! How can Spezza be only 3 points behind them, when he is playing with Zzz who after November has scored only 4 times? How can Spezza be only 3 behind them when he has Michalek on his line who has scored only 4 goals since from November on. Spezza’s linemates have 18 goals, total and that is the number only one of Turris’ linemates have the other has 20!

Moreover, the Captain is playing with 2 players who are collectively minus 36. Smeone, anyone (even the letter writer and Fool) please explain to me how it is possible for the Captain (the Fool’s Captain) still have 39 points? Please explain how he could possibly have a better plus minus playing with these two?

Couldn’t the Sun write an article that would try to explain how it is possible for Spezza to still have 39 points (again, only 3 and 4 behind the Turris line) playing with his linemates.

I help them out, it is because he gets the points playing with some who can produce when given a chance!

Conacher got an assist last night; he now has 18 points and only 3 short of the celebrated Zzzz! He was plus one last night, Zzzz was minus one. Conacher is now plus 9 and Zzzz minus 13. Yet, do we read any of that in the “sports”? That’s a big….NOPE!

What is the agena here? Why aren’t there articles written that expose the team’s 3 year rebuild as a complete failure? Why do they “select” some players to crown and others to hang? What is the selection process/criteria? Why can’t we fans have a really good hockey club, coach and GM? Did the DAC’s interview after the game (when asked about “the save”) make you proud? Couldn’t he have said “that save was outstanding…no doubt…but Andy had 46″!

Had it not been for Andy, the Team would certainly have allowed at least 4 more goals scored and added to their poor record. Why is the “team defence” ignored?

Do fans really want to read about “tweets”. I don’t. I would rather read some honest reporting, like how Neal could beat the gargantuan Cowen on the inside. Why Cowen thinks he is puck carrier (only to lose it often), why the D is out of position so damn often, why the DAC/DAACs are helpless to effect any change.

It wont happen of course. Tonight we will see/hear the grinning, backslapping tandem gush over Karlsson, prospects, Team and the future. The Sens are playing St Louis, who will show up…any guesses? But, more impotantly, what will be written tomorrow and will the Sun publish another letter crucifying the Captain?

  18. Mike8888 says:

Good game last night. The game was played with a high intensity level, very much like a play off game. You have to be happy with getting a point in Pittsburgh. DaCosta seems to be improving game by game. It’s a good thing the Sens management didn’t write him off. Hopefully they play the same way tonight.

  19. Bobby Goodman says:

Really Mikey? You hope the Sens allow 48 shots and deliver 25? Do you want the Sens to spend most of the game in their own end? Do you want to, again, rely on spectacular goaltending to win? Do you want Ryan to continue his drought (he has been ineffective or a bunch of games now but only one player gets the wrath of the media…goi figure). Do you want Cowen to lead rushes. Do you want Karly to lead only 2 (when the team has a man advantage only) and delivery only 2 shots. Do you want Michalek to continue his goal scoring drought, what about Zzzz? The Fool doesn’t include Spezza when he says “we” anymore. But, he (and a muiltitude of others) don’t want to offer an opinion as to why Spezza is centered out when he is only 3 points behind Turris and MaArthur playing with the players he has for 3 years! I expect stupidity from the Fool but not from you!

Indeed, Da Costa did play well, by far his best game as a Sen. Maybe it is time to do what Dave introduced and put him on the wing with the guy who lost the game for the Sens last night (the other 3 all did their job). You are right, they certainly didn’t write him off, nor did they write off Butler, Silfverberg, Rund’sbad, Zzzz and many others but….they certainly wrote off Petersson and Hoffman! At what point does a team write off a player Mikey? Keeping a player around long enough, they will get better, but will they be good enough? What is good enough Mikey…if Da Costa sticks around, what are our expectations?

Let me ask, what are your expectations tonight (the game after this one, the rest of the year…next year and in the Stanley Cup wining year 2016)? Will Zzz be on his ass even more tonight than he was last night? Will he set up Spez for a single shot? Will they be able to catch a pass, bury an opportunity? Will Karly, for the 3rd game, not show up (or were you satisfied with his performance last night and in Toronoto?).

If Spezza can earn points, with two bums, what could he do with a “player” or two? Why not do what Ferarro suggested and put the slumping Ryan on with Spezza and punish Turris with Zzzz; certainly Turris could make Zzzz a goal scorer. Do you or anybody else for that matter, believe that Turris would have 42 points (only 3 more than that lazy, looser Spezza) if he was saddled with Michalek and Zzzz? Spezza was invisible but Zzzz got 5 shots (and he uselss). Zzz was visible alright.

Whats your call tonight Mikey? What about the Fool? The Sens are going to playing a pretty tough team who are very hard on the forcheck. Will Karly get 2 shots, 4 hits..lead 2 rushes? Will Zzz get 5 earth shattering hits (and I am not talking about hitting the ice)? Will Conacher continue going into the corner first and get smoked to make a play (like he did for Da Costa’s goal) and get no recognition?

Damn I love the Fools opinions on…..on…………on……………..he really doesn’t offer an opinon on anything at all does he?

  20. PaV says:

Wow – look the predicted rant came in to light. What a surprise.

  21. chokerhater says:

Getting a point in Pittsburgh is tough, but now they play a very good western team on the second night, watch all the big stars (haha) take the night off.
    Spezza was brutal.

  22. Bobby Goodman says:

My God, 1200 and Simmer were all over Rocco today. I understand the morning show(s) was the same. This blog and the news papers… You have to wonder how a guy can perform when he gets so much grief. I will put this out there and ask someone, anyone to repond: how would Turris do if he had Zzzz and Michalek on the outside game after game (and of course the many others)? Just looking for a discussion here, no wrong or right answers.

Versace was downright angry, he said Spezza quit on the play/shift in OT. What fascinates me is, the color guy last night, Ferrari is brutally candid, while the masses have all congregated to vilify Spezza, I didn’t hear the same from him. Simmer was saying Spezza can’t do this, and he can’t do that…I thought he had a lot of jump from the very first shift. Whereas I don’t see quit in his game, I see it all the time in others who are ignored. I look forward to the game tonight and I know what I am going to see. What do you guys expect to see tonight? Anybody?????

  23. Bobby Goodman says:

Damn that must hurt having to write an article that includes, in a very subdued way, Spezza got 3 points in a 4 goal game. It took half the article to to indentify he got a goal and two assists and not before reminding all the readers he was “guilty of a defensive zone turn over that coast them a win against Pittsburgh in overtime”! While Michalek hit the post in a shootout, Spezza just “failed to score”.

Don’t look now but Spezza (the lazy looser) is tied with Ryan an d MacArthur with 42 points and only 1 behind Turris who got a goal last night. Was that mentioned in the article? Mais non mes amis. Spezza could have had a couple more points if some others could finish. Don didn’t write about Ryan’s goal scoring, point earning drought. He failed to mention Zzz’s goal scoring drought. He failed to mention that Greening going to the bench in OT in the game against Pittsurgh (leaving 3 to fend off 4) may possibly have hurt the hockey club and contributed to the loss.

Spezza, the liability, is so untrustworthy, Karly is on the ice with him every single shift. Why might that be? Could it be for defencive support?

I wonder what Ottawa will be talking about today. I wonder what the juvenile clowns in the moring will have to say. What about Versace and Simmer. Afterall, Versace was downright angry and Simmer said Spezza just can’t do it anymore (failing to recognize he was only 3 pts behind the Turris line members at the time).

The Shooter had a shot yesterday and neither he or Michalek set up Spezza (one got an assist on his goal but didn’t set him up…he got it on his own). Spezza had one shot.

Yes, buried in the middle of his article, after reminding the readers of Spezza’s failings the night befoe, Don writes about Spezza’s 3 points. But again, he takes great care to remind the readers that his two assists were the result of “blind back hand passes that draws him so much criticism”! Were they spectacular? Not to him I guess and the pass to Michalek was not blind nor was it risky (195 feet away from Lehner).

The Fool must be just sick to his stomach. Will we see a Letter in the Sun praising the Captain? Don’t hold your breath. Yes, the masses were out of control yesterday; do they unite when Spezza plays a good game? Nosirrrrrr. The Captain is tied with the much celebrated Ryan and Mac and a single point behind Turris (and Spezza has more assists…how can that be) which leves him tied Filppula and RNH at 42 points and ahead of the following who get a lot of love:

    - B/Richards,
    - M/Richards,
    - Kadri,
    - Stepan,
    - Carter,
    - Bergeron.
    - M/Kovu.
    -Plekanec
    - Kessler and
    - Sedin

Six of them were selected to go to Sochi.

Speaking of Kessler and Sedin, I predicted the Canucks would crash and burn under Yosemite Sam and of course, its happening. The jerk is an embarrassment to his profession, his team and the league. As Craig Button said last night (God bless him) he’ll blame others but never himself.

  24. Bobby Goodman says:

Speaking about an embarrassment to their profession, what about the performances of Brownie and Potsie? Was that something else? I would go somewhere elso but The Voice and “Kowabunga” doesn’t do it for me. Are there really some out there who truly enjoy Dumb and Dumber…really (aside from a Fool of course)?

Mackinnon’s game is getting better at an amazing pace and although he is a favourite today to win the Calder (for the Fool: Rookie of the Year) Jacob Trouba is gaining ground. He does all that Karly does, except he is big, strong, unafraid, goes into corners, can skate backwards, loves physicality, will show up in tough games and will actually beat someone off the puck to earn a genuine Tka. The guy is simply amazing and from what I have seen the last couple of years, he blows Seth Jones out of the water. He is only 19 years old!

  25. Bobby Goodman says:

Rant Pav? I try to get a discussion going, what topics have you introduced…ever? Here’s an opportunity for you to lose the Fool monicker, please share with us your thoughts on the following:

    - what would Turris do with Spezza’s linemates; or Spezza with his
    - is 42 points good for Turris, Ryan and Michalek but bad for Spezza
    - do Michalek and Zzzz help or hurt Spezza’s plus/minus
    - will you post, last night Spezza “was visible” and the win was “because he was on the ice
    - why doesn’t Spezza get some love when he has a good game requisite with the hate when it is deemed he was bad
    - why are so many united in hate

What is your take on the following Pav…I are anxious to hear your views:

    - the Jets, their players, coaching change, Trouba
    - the Canucks, Yosemite Sam,
    - Ottawa’s 48 and 50 shots allowed the last 2 games (their record, goals against…)
    - what would you do with the goalies in Ottawa
    - would you trade Spezza, promote someone from the farm (who and why)
    - who will win the Calder (psssst: Rookie fo the Year)
    - do you agree with the Olympic Team selections
    - who should have been selected
    - who would you have to replace Stamkos and why
    - is it a positive sign that the Sens have only 2 going to Sochi
    - Do you think Hokey Canada is doing a good job (Juniors and Professional)
    - Who should win the Norris (best defenceman in the league) and why
    - what do you think of Potvin and Brown; Ferarro, Johnson, Debrusk
    - is there any other player in the NHL who is targetted by the home town media and fans like Spezza
    - is it just
    - will the team make the post season, will they next year, will they win the Cup in ’16
    - are you happy with the Team’s 3 year rebuild
    - is Shanahan doing a good job
    - Do you think Randy Carlyle is dong a good job, what about their GM
    - should there be some talk about Ryan’s slump (not much since Olympic announcement)
    - if not, why not
    - if Spezza was the reason for the OT loss against the Pens…who was responsible for the OT loss when Zzzz and Michalk started in OT and the other team (Phoenix I think) immediately scored
    - should Greening assume any blame for the Pittsburgh loss

Introduce something, say something, have a take man!!!!! I tell you what, I’ll introduce a few more. I would love to see the Sens adopt the Barber Pole stripes; if they can have them on the sweaters, they most certainly should be on the socks. I like the shoot-out, what’s your take? I think a PP should be a full two minutes whether a goal is scored or not. I think the trapazoid is absolute nonsense. I love a good scrap but it is time to move beyond it. If players scrap, their outahere. I wouldn’t want Kassian on my team and I wouldn’t dress him for any game. I like the proposed changes to the draft. I want more Canadian teams (in particular, one in Quebec City). Detroit has 8 (eight) players going to Sochi, yet they have the same record as the Sens…how is that possible?

    Love to hear what…

  26. Mike8888 says:

Wow, despite the obviously lop-sided refereeing, the Sens came out with 2 points. That has to rank as one of the worst refereed games I’ve ever seen. Sure the Sens were probably yapping to the striped shirts too much but to obviously favour the Blues for the rest of the game was brutal. I sure hope the NHL will discipline them for that display, but in reality, I’m sure nothing will happen. I’m still waiting for Shanahan to rule on the Kadri hit. I won’t hold my breath. It seems for 2 out of the last 3 games the Sens have had to play the opposition and the referees.

    Bobby,
Again, we all could constantly stress negativity every chance we get, but most of us don’t see the point. Perhaps we’re glass half full to your half empty. Everything seems to anger you and you wonder why we aren’t angry. Maybe we enjoy watching our favourite team and don’t all stress out with each and every negative aspect that arises.By the way, I’ve always said that I like Spezza, I feel he’s a valuable member of the team, and hope he resigns after his current contact is up.

  27. PaV says:

Speaking about an embarrassment the Immature Child rants are getting more and more out of touch with reality.

The SENS game back and won against the Blues. They played well. Spez had a three point night but still looked very slow on the ice.

“KARLY” had a beautiful goal and played really well, that means he was at fault for all the goals against the SENS.

The Immature Child rants give you the picture that he is sitting by his TV each and every SENS game with a note pad taking down each and every move each player on the SENS makes on each shift. Must be really, really, really, rewarding.

Can’t wait for the next set of rants!!!!!! :-)

  28. PaV says:

Speaking about an embarrassment to their profession, what about the performances of Brownie and Potsie? Was that something else? I would go somewhere elso but The Voice and “Kowabunga” doesn’t do it for me. Are there really some out there who truly enjoy Dumb and Dumber…really (aside from a Fool of course)?

Again, I wonder where the Immature Child gets his facts? In truth, they are lies in most cases. He makes things up if and when he see’s fit. Must have nothing better to do. Really quite sad.

I challenge the Immature Child to provide proof that I said I enjoyed Dean and Potvin calling the games. I am not a fan of Potvin, but thing Dean is a top notch play by play guy. I wonder if the Immature Child would have the stones to tell any one of the media types (Don, Bruce, Dean, Potvin etc.) to their face all the crap he spews on here. My thinking would be that he would tuck his tail in between his legs and hide behind the corner.

Mike8888 – the lack of knowledge that the Immature Child has about the game was proven when he said that the SENS would only win one of the three games last week.

  29. Dan the Man says:

Bobby, re Brown and Potvin, you are spot on. It was brutal to listen to. In fact it was so brutal I had to stop watching. Sad eh!

  30. OD99 says:

Again missed the games this week but seems we hung on a little against Pitt.

Not ideal but some play-off teams get by with giving up way more scoring chances game after game and relying on goaltending and opportune scoring so I will gladly take the 1 point…I did see that save off Karlsson and could be the save of the year. Can’t hate on Karlsson for “missing” just have to give props for an amazing save.

Seems like a better effort against the Blues and happy to see the boys rallied from a deficit to come back and take lead but remains disturbing they give up the lead in the 3rd again.

The shoot-out seemed tense – Zibby is proving to be a bright light one-on-one with the goalie and I have seen DaCosta make more than a few AHL goalies look sick with that move – have to admit my favourite part of the highlights I have seen so far is Smith and Spezza with jaws agape after Stephane’s shoot-out move and his sweet goal against the Pens as well.

Just need another good effort Thursday and hopefully get another 2 points before heading into the break. I am still so stoked for the OLYMPICS!!!! Love the whole darn thing but of course the hockey should be amazing…

As for stuff on Kessel the reality is that both teams made out OK but the Bruins traded Seguin (although the players they received back are pretty good). If the Leafs were in contention when they traded for Kessel perhaps it would look better but right now he is a very good player (while being a minus) and scoring just over a point per game as a 26 year old while Sequin is just over a ppg at 22 years old.

Tyler has also barely been a minus player twice in his career (total of -6 over 2 seasons) while Kessel has been a + player only once and this season despite their crazy scoring JVR is also a – player while the very under-rated Bozak is +3…certainly shows that Dion at +17 is very impressive season.

Spezza is now tied with Michalek at -21 and is 817 of all 822 players in the NHL. This point is just to balance things out…

Spezza scoring is amazing for the team and I am going to go out on a limb and suggest he feels much better and may just be peaking at the right time…he can gain loads of confidence and then rest up before the end of season push.

  31. Bobby Goodman says:

It should be a relatively easy 2 points for our boys tonight but at this level, you never really know for sure and should never take it for granted. Who should start ‘tween the pipes???

It should be worrisome that Bobby Ryan has scored only 4 goals in the last 23 games. It should be the same for Zzzz who has 4 in the last 29 and Michalek who has 5 in the last 45.

I always believed that Stamkos was a placeholder for St Louis, it may happen yet but the team can’t really go wrong with anyone of the candidates: St Louis, Giroux, Neal (my choice).

Stevenson writes that the Canadians need to learn how to score goals on the big ice surface. The notion is a silly one really. The goalies are the same, the dimensions of the net are the same, only the ice surface is wider and that favors those with speed and skill! With 99% of those competing all playing in the NHL and 100% of them all having experienced the larger ice, aren’t they all playing on a “level playing field”? What might that 1% bring that would be the difference maker? If the brain trust are fully away the game might be different (as much as the game was different in the old NHL with some rinks with smaller dimensions than others – a great equalizer) what is the issue. Speed and skill will be the difference and if you can add size, its even better.

Spezza would be second in scoring on the Wings who are sending 10 to Sochi, 6 of them Swedes (he is only 3rd in Ottawa). Annika’s master plan worked out perfectly (he knew from the get go the Wings weren’t Stanley Cup material!).

Mike Hoffman has 55 points inf 45 games, including 23 goals. He was Player of the Week in the AHL last week. He has been a proven performer for a few years yet, he will only get 1 or 3 games and limited icetime. 2g and 5 assists in 6 games was good enought to get Zzzz promoted and the kid has 4g in the last 29 games at teh NHL level (playing with some of the very best). What might Hoffman do…what might Petersson do given an extended look? To hear the media saying Da Costa is playing with confidence is absolutely silly! Of course he is playing with confidence he has been given 46 games to cultivate his game/confidence! What might Hoffman do given the same opportunity????

I read that Caligula’s trip to India was a “thinly veiled cash-grab”….there was no veil at all! Who wouldn’t go and collect $2meg to play a round of golf. That’s more than I earn in an entire year!!!!!!

  32. Mike8888 says:

This blog is alive again. Bruce, were you in a coma?

  33. Bruce Garrioch says:

I had a couple of days off. I know I shouldn’t take days off.

  34. Mike8888 says:

    Where’s your blog dedication? :)

  35. PaV says:

Bruce, how dare you!? I thought your world revolved around us???!

  36. PaV says:

Bobby! your back! ill respond to your post!

  37. PaV says:

    Bobby,

    - what would Turris do with Spezza’s linemates; or Spezza with his
Response: They tried Bobby Ryan with him. I think there was a time that they had CM with him as well – there was no chemistry

    – is 42 points good for Turris, Ryan and Michalek but bad for Spezza
Response: NEVER said it wasn’t good enough. But what I was trying to prove is that the +/- stat means nothing. Spez is a 60 pt guy if not more – but he hasn’t been the same since his injury. He is struggling on the ice. There was some 4 of 4 situations where he was waiting at the blue line for a pass when the other three on the ice were trying to defend the other four – Spez uis not a cheery picker type of player.

    – do Michalek and Zzzz help or hurt Spezza’s plus/minus
Response: Does Spezza help ZBAD and Milan? Do they help each other? Does the blind passes work? They worked twice vs. the Blues but the three times vs. the PENS it was a disaster.

    - will you post, last night Spezza “was visible” and the win was “because he was on the ice
Response: I posted something liket that, Spez had a great game, but I still think he was slow and unsteady. What about what happened in OT vs. the PENS? Spez clearly gave up on the puck and we lost – that game was nuts, will you admit that the SENS kept up with the best player in the world and his team? The PENS are top in the East – and we stole a point from them Granted, Andy was amazing.

-why doesn’t Spezza get some love when he has a good game requisite with the hate when it is deemed he was bad & why are so many united in hate
Response: Again, ill give credit when credit is due. But tell me something, creative as Spez is, don’t you get fed up with the behind the back passes? The lack of getting to the puck?

    In response to your other:
    - I don’t really follow the JETS but it looks like the coaching change has helped. They are playing better. I am a huge Dustin B Fan.
    - You already know that I am not a fan of Torts. I think he should have been thrown out of the league for his bush league antics vs the Flames
    - you look at the shots as a weakness – look at it that we have confidence in our goalie and you are also forgetting that during the Blues game they had to kill off 3 in a row one of which was a 1 minute and 45 second 5 on 3
    - I like both. I didn’t want to see Bishop go, but Anderson is playing well and he has bounced back from a really bad start. Lenher had a great game vs the Blues. He is a good young goaltender.
    - No. I don’t was Spez traded.
    - Ill get back to you on the Rookie of the year – I need to have a think about that one
    - I think that St. Louis should have been on the team. I (and I know you love him) don’t think PK should have been chosen – but I hope he does well – when playing for Canada you cheer for the team. The rest of the team for me is a ‘meh’. Crosby will do this best to lead.
    (con’t)………

  38. PaV says:

    - I think that Neal from the PENS should replace Stamkos.
    - The SENS had a rough start – what more do you want me to say? I am glad that we have two going and not 1 or 0.
    - I think Hockey Canada is doing the best they think they are doing. I think that Canada is falling behind – they need to start thinking how to develop players better.
    - I like Brown – not a fan of Potvin, Ferarro, Healy and PJ
    - Yes there was – but can’t remember his name, but the media in MTL gave a player a heart attack – they also attached Koivu becasue he didn’t speak French – the media in MTL, TO etc always have a bone to pick.
    - At this point the SENS have a shot for the post season
    - I don’t have my crystal ball – so I can’t tell you about next season
    - 3 years is nothing – TO went through a 8 year re-build – Edmonton is on year 5 I think
    - Shanny is horrible
    - Ryan is not playing well – but he still leads the team in goals does he not?

  39. Bobby Goodman says:

…and I will respond to whaterv topics you might raise for discussion!

Mikey, no anger…confusion though. Is it wrong to ask why Spezza is unversally hated by the media and then by default the fan base? Is it wrong to ask why only the negative letters are published? Is it wrong to ask why the media in general are all Anit-Spezmitic? I am a raging ant-semantic but certainly not an anti-Spezite! Are you?

I would love you hear your opinion on a few things…just for discussion. Don’t you find it curious that Karly is on the ice for 27-30 minutes a game and most of the time with the Turris and Spezza line (almost exclusivel with Spezza though). They log approximately 18-19 minutes or so (36 total). Effectively he is the 4th forward with them taking full advantage of their offence and accumulating points. Getting as many points as he does, he is still -13! Why is that do you think? Can you imagine if he had to play entirely with Spezz, Michalek and Zzzz who are minus a gazillion! Are you too another who thinks 4 goals in 29 games is fine for Zzz? I have always believed if someone is not a goal scorer or playmaker, they need to FOCUS on defence; he doesn’t. What about Michalek and his 5 in 45 (the same thing applies with him and he is minus 21). I know a minus number is a shared stat, but some are more responsible for a goals scored against than others don’t you think? Did you ever read, see or hear anythng that resembled what Spezza got when he really did give a puck away or neglected to make an effort that lost a game? If not, why not but more importantly? Do you not think that Spezza, who is now 3rd and will no doubt be 2nd soon, should play with some better players. How do you think he can get out of the negative numbers if his linemates can neither score goals or defend? His predicament is compounded with Karlsson always sharing the ice with him and he has been on the ice for more goals scored against the team than anyone else!!!!

What about the notion of Spezza having to better 5 on 5? Does that apply to anybody else…Karlsson? He’s 5 on 5 stats aren’t nearly as good as Spezza’s but that it ignored as well. Why Mikey? At the end of November Eric Staal was minus 16. Do you think he got grief like Spezza?

No anger buddy, doesn’t curiosity. No hate, just bewilderment.

Buffalo is a bad hockey club. What do you expect from the usual suspects? I expect the team to win of course but it will be interesting to see if Ryan can get the Monkey off his back. I don’t know who will start but I hope it is Lehner.

  40. Dan the Man says:

Is Don not capable of moderating? I know he has little to no intersest in this blog site and I am pretty sure he would vote to shut it down if he had a choice. Seriously the Sun should either shut this site down if blogs are going to be constantly delayed for 24+ hours or more or get Donnie and others to help out to keep the site up to dat and relevent. You can’t get any decent dialogue going without a time sensitivity approach. By the way Bruce, how difficult is it to read a few blogs and okay them to pass modernazation? Please stop trying to make the running of this blog site sound like an onerus and time demanding chore.

  41. Bruce Garrioch says:

Everything okay Dan? You feel better now? I sure do.

  42. Dan the Man says:

Well done Bruce. It only took 2.5 hours to moderate. I think most of us enjoy this blog site and the banter is very interesting to say the least. All I am is saying is that it would be a shame not to make this site as good as it could be.

  43. Mike8888 says:

Well they got the 2 points last night but they almost blew it. Spezza is on fire at a good time. It seems Michalek is aloso gaining confidence and playing his game again. I’m also liking the way Gryba and Greening are playing. They’re both playing very physical. The Sens have a lot of depth on d now. They’re going to have make some sort of trade either this year or next with both Borocop and Klaessan ready for the show.

  44. Bobby Goodman says:

I see another nasty letter crucifying Spezza was published in the Sun today; is anybody else curious as to why this is a regular occurance? Some facts ignored by the media (all) today:

    - Spezza has surpassed everyone on the Turris line and now sits 2nd on the team in scoring in spite of playing with many who don’t compliment his play.

    - Milan always worked hard, but he couldn’t bury his chances. He is doing that now and I hope it continues. He could very well have scored a couple more last night. What’s great is he is finding the holes and Spezza is finding him.

    - Zzzz is not finding the holes. He is far too static and he waits for the puck to get to him. Rather than park it….move it…he needs to slide in and out and give his linemates a chance to maintain possession! He is lightning quick to give a pass but do you ever see a give a go?

    - The “Shooter” Zzzz, had no shots on net. He didn’t register a single hit and Y4 says he is very physical! He did a fly-by on the only goal scored against his line and was invisible all night.

    - Hoffman lights up the AHL, Zzz coasts around in the NHL (and gets rewarded for 4 goals in the last 30 games). Why?

    - The Sens could have had the 6-4 Canadian centerman Couturier. He got two more assists last night and now has 9g and 19a and only minus 1 playing against all the best and killing most penalites. He is also a French Canadia kid and and it would be nice to have some on our hockey club.

    - Bobby Ryan has scored only 4 goals in the last 24 games. I feel bad for him but is he stuggling.

    - Conacher got another assist last night and was plus one. He is all out, all the time yet, he only got 7.28 of TOI. Go figure.

    - Karlsson got a nice goal last night but where was he on a goal scored against…at the blue line and he is a defenceman.

    - The other paper is giddy to point out that Spezza hasn’t scored a 5 on 5 goal for a long time. Is it within the realm of possibility it may be due to who he plays with? Besides, who cares…if he gets points….someone is scoring goals for the team!!!!

    - Da Costa is surprising he hell out of me. He is playing very well and he is playing physical. As Don said “he made a beautiful pass to Karlsson” for his goal (Spezza merely set up Milan twice) but it was the result of some very hard work by Conacher!

The PP wasn’t very good last night but the team and coaches make it more difficult. Karlsson HAS TO MOVE THE PUCK TO THE FORWARDS QUICKER!!! How many times must he make them all stop at the blueline?! Leading rushes up the ice is wonderful…but there are 4 others…why lead a rush up the ice until you’re surrounded and then lose it? How many passes are to far ahead or in the feet. The man advantage means there is one more player on the ice……use him!

Vancouver is going down the crapper; how is that possible with Yosemite Sam at the helm? Mackinnon now has 21g and another young Canadian boy, Monohan has 16. Great stuff.

  45. ChokerHater says:

Bruce they have this built in pain, and with the Chokers winning a few games they can’t jump off the bandwagon so they take it out on you hehe…Poor guy.

Last night was just the thing to show you just how bad the Chokers really are, they barely beat the worst team in hockey, that was using their backup goalie. Says something when your team gets to play against second string goalies a lot. This team is brutal and although Bobby tends to ramble on, he makes a lot of good points. I’m thinking Baby Murray is glad to be gone.

On that note, I think he’ll position his team to be able to have a real good chance at McDavid and build a new dynasty around him

  46. Bobby Goodman says:

If Bobby Ryan is stuck on 20 goals and only 4 scored in the last 24 games, who believes he will break out of his slump playing with Zzzz? Has anyone witnessed a lot of creativity in Zzzz’s play? What about nifty stickhandling in tight quarters, sick passes, willingness to hold onto the puck and draw others in to open up a team mate. Has he shown patience with the puck. All these are hall marks of a gifted center, not someone who just lines up in the middle.

Zzzz suggests he and “Conn’s skating” will help Ryan. Do you see him skating? Going hard, crashing the net, corners, bodies? Conacher will and he has more assists!!!!

The media remind’s us all about Ryan’s slump but what about the “star prospect” Zzzz? He has only 4 goals in the last 30 games! Is that on the Captain? When will Zzz be responsible for HIS OWN PLAY AND RESULTS? How do you think Ryan feels about being replaced by Condra and playing on a so called 3rd line? Good…motivated? Will Condra help the Turris line?

Milan said he is used to many different combinations imposed on them by the Coach and I not sure it was a compliment. I will say this though, he and Spezza must be extremely happy this time! What you will witness today is Greening actually going into a corner and battling for a puck; he wont be idle (parked) hanging out high in the slot waiting for a pass to come to him! Greening and Zzzzz have similar puck handling skills (not great) but Greening is a far better skater (stronger, faster) and wont be on his ass a half dozen times a game. Greening can register 0 to 1 shot a game like Zzzz. And, Zzzz actually is physical, no pretend hits from him and he wont lead with his big ass!

What kind of game do we fans expect from Zzz today? Another question mught be, what is expected from him because it seems to me there are no expectations. He can do no wrong even when he does…nothing? What kid of game do fans expect from Karlsson? Will he again be at the blue line (ahead of even the wingers) in a bid to join a rush while the other team scores? Will he free wheel like he did aganst Buffalo? Will he, as Potsie claims, be the most physcial Senator? What about the PP, will he get the puck to the forwards quicker, make great passes and introduce some creativity? Or will precious time, again, be wasted?

I am glad that Methot finally found his game. Sitting out for 2 days really helped. He was struggling before that, wasn’t he? Methot is very good fro Gryba (Methot is good for anyone) but Gryba needs to stick to basics and use the boards. He doesn’t need to chase anyone. He and Cowen shouldn’t over handle the puck. This tandem will get all the hard assignments (Karly will get the easier ones playing wing with Turris and Spezza).

What a shame it is about Letang; I wish him a speedy recovery. I wish it was Neal in Sochi (he is closer to Stamkos-like player). Hamuis over Phaneuf? Why is the NYR’s Stall ever in the conversation?
