Blue Jackets fever?

- January 28th, 2014

COLUMBUS – It’s rare that Senators GM Byran Murray does not accompany the team on a road trip, so naturally his absence here raises a question.
Is Murray back in Ottawa, or on a scouting trip, working out a big trade?
Or did he just realize this junket was a good one to miss?
The score as of this morning is Columbus 22, Ottawa 20. That’s the temperature, with a minus in front. And if it’s minus-22 here today, it felt like minus-40 last night.
I stopped by the hotel bar looking for some friends. The fellow beside me asked what was on tap. He settled on “Old Man Winter Ale”.
“It seems appropriate tonight,” he said.
I dropped by another spot to watch the Blue Jackets play the Carolina Hurricanes. Except even with the 40-odd TVs in “Brothers”, the Jackets game was not on. The Pittsburgh-Buffalo game was, but no Jackets.
How odd is that? They had won 8 of their last 9. Where was Jackets fever?
“Oh yeah,” the bartender said when I told him the home team was playing in Carolina. “It should be on. It’s probably over by now.
“Hey, do you mind if we put on a movie? We usually do on Mondays. It’s Animal House tonight.”
Just keep one TV on hockey if you don’t mind, I said.
I got to watch the end of the Penguins-Sabres game – Pitts was lucky to escape with a victory, no matter what the 3-0 final suggests – and also learned that the Jackets choked up a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 in Carolina.
Suddenly, the Jackets have lost two in a row. They’re not so hot anymore. And we wonder, does anyone in frigid Columbus really care?

I think in places like CBJ, FLA, PHX etc none really cares about hockey. Its pretty sad that the home town bar isn’t showing the game.

  2. RJ says:

I wouldn’t be so offended if you had actually reported on any other bar than “Brothers”. Please, don’t let that place represent us. If you would have checked out “R-Bar”, or mainly anywhere outside of the Park St. you would have had no problem finding a game. When there is no OSU game, this town loves it’s Jackets.

  3. Mike8888 says:

Who can blame Murray. From the sounds of it, Columbus isn’t the most exciting city to visit. Maybe Murray is working on a trade though.

  4. ChokerHater says:

I think the Sens playoff hopes are over, so any trades they make should be long term. Never mind Moulson who is a UFA at the end of the season and word is he’s headed back to be with his best buddy Tavares

  5. Bobby Goodman says:

After being around the league 30 plus years, I suspect Bryan isn’t concerned a bit about excitement. He has been to every City a million times; he’s seen it all. Nor would I make a call on a City based on Don’s visit to two bars. Has the GM made the trip to the ‘Peg or Buffalo? I could be wrong but are they exciting places to visit (if indeed that is a legitimate reason for a GM to join his team for an out of town game).

I am looking forward to the game tonight. The Blue Jackets have scored 150 goals to Ottawa’s 147 (a push basically) but they have only allowed 145 to the Sens 165. That could be the difference (as it is for most games).

There are some kids I really like on their team and they play the same way every game. The 21 year old Johanson is 6-3 and 221 and will be a dandy. Murray is a 6-1, 208 defeneman with a lot of promise, he can really skate. Boone Jenner is 6-2, 208 and an honest two way guy who can chip in for some goals and plays hard every shif, every game; he is 20 as well. Atkinson is 24 but he too can really skate and has the ability to go coast to coast (he wants the puck) and score a highlight reel goal!

I have alway liked Dubinsky and believe Yosemite Sam hindered his development. He is another who will play hard every game and he can make things happen. Since he first arrived in Florida, I was a Horton fan. He is huge, talented and has made an impact since returning. He used to go a lot more before the concussions; I suspect you wont see it anymore but, he will play physical.

The guys that leave you wanting are Gaborik and Anisimov. Bother are really talented and Gaborik has exceptional speed…if only they had Dubinsky’s drive.

I remember Skille when he a kid and then drafted by the ‘Hawks, it never really panned out for him.

The difference in the two teams, from my perspective, is their Coach has them playing far more responsibly than the Sens. You simply wont see anyone on their team quit, concede the puck or not show up. That is why they have allowed 20 less goals against than Ottawa.

If Zzzz is in the middle with Michalek and Conacher, see how often number 65 is on with them. I have noticed, in spite averaging 27 minutes a game, he (the Coach actually) manages to play far more with Turris and Spezza. You should see The Big Rig on when their take their turn.

  6. Bobby Goodman says:

Did anyone take notice of Zzzz’s game tonight? The Shooter had a single shot, no goals and no assists. He never won a single battle, was on his butt a lot, never beat the opposition to the puck, didn’t carry the puck more than 12 feet but….he did see a fair share of the PP time. Little Conacher has 17 points and more assists than the playmaking Zzzz and was engaged the entire game. Yet, many like the way he plays on the outside where it is entirely safe. I don’t get it.

Spezza got two points (1g and 1a), but they didn’t come with Michalek and Zzzz. But, he has to be better…right? It is interesting that Karly, who was again awful in his own end all night and on the ice for 1 of Columbus’ two goals never has to be…better. His minus 14 is good. He leads all D in points but he doesn’t lead in goals, he doesn’t lead in assists, nor does he lead in hits, take aways but he does lead in Gva and 270 defencemen have better plus/minus. No, he doesn’t have to be better. Neither does Zzzz.

The Sens were beat in every aspect of the game but Andy came through for them. It is great for him and his confidence.

  7. OD99 says:

What? You couldn’t find the game on? I trust you are staying within walking distance of the arena Don and there are a bunch of bars there that would show the game.

I don’t recall Brothers myself but that whole area is crawling with places that would have had it on.

Good win tonight I guess…will have to watch this and T-Bay game when I get home but LOVE that DaCosta scored!! If he was getting time with Spezza it is about time – kid has good hands, good vision and a good shot…but I thought he got sent back to Bingo?

I wasn’t disappointed he was because I thought they would let a winger come back up but I do hope DaCosta shows what he has up here and perhaps a 2 goal effort is jut the spur he needs to go on a run.

  8. Mike8888 says:

DaCosta scores 2 on the road. (maybe he’s not a write off after all) Anderson and Spezza both played great.

Perhaps I should write off every prospect in the Sens organization. If I did, I bet I’d be right on occasion. I can also complain about every one of their coaches, management, broadcasters and half of there players. Of course everyone who disagrees with me would be a pompom waver and not really understand what’s going on. I guess I could be negative 90% of the time, but what would be the point.

  9. Bobby Goodman says:

Mikey, if you wait long enough, certainly a player will score some goals! In 43 games with the Sens DaCosta has 6 goals! Why does he get 46 games, wasn’t it clear enough the kid is realitivly slight and although skilled, he doesn’t possess a lot of speed? He got 46 games to finally have a 2 goal game (which you now declare is a true sample of what we can expect) while others in the manures never seem to get the privilege? Did you know that DaCosta had Petersson on his line in Bingo?

No Mikey, I don’t write off every prospect and that is just plain silly, don’t you think. I don’t write off anybody but I do offer an opinion if they are going to help the Senators or not! You don’t write off all the prospects and their have been many, indeed, you didn’t write write off one (nor do you ever offer an opinion!).

Why would i write off every prospect? Can I now add new prospects with foreigners and Swedes in particular to my hate list? Only after watching a kid play do I offer an opinion. I had a take on the following players who I thought weren’t the “great prospects” the Sens would have you believe and some of them include”

    - Daisy the Air Rifle (do you remember the big splash!)
    - Silfverberg (he IS a shooter with a world class shot, can score but is soft)
    - Butler (in the AHL and in 96 games with the Sens he had 16 goals)
    - Rund’sbad (50 NHL games has 1g and 8 assists; as a Sen in 24 games he was 1 and 4 and minus 11; with Phoenix this year in the 12 games he’s played he as an assist and minus 3)
    - Gryba is apparently on the trading block, again (he was offered up before)
    - Wiercoch is in and out of the lineup
    - Cowen (is in all the time…but for his size, he doesn’t punish and like Gyrba is very slow)
    - Pageau (has a big heart but small, in 30 games with the Sebs is 4 -2 and -2)
    - ZZZZ is the star of the show. The swift skating centre who can go around or through (Dean Brown), creative (DAC), physical (Y3) gets all the soft assignments, PP time every game and is supposed to be a star. He has 20 pts and only 9 assists where as Conacher (who has a pair and really can skate) now has 17 points and 13 assists. Oh, Conacher is plus 8 while Zzzz is minus 11.

I could go on Mikey. I only make a call on players after watching them play. I never saw the promise that the Murray boys would have you believe in the players I pointed out. Have you ever made a call on a player? Most fans do what you just did, wait until many games have been played and finally score a goal or two and then say “maybe he isn’t a write off after all”.

If you watched the game last night Mikey, did you like what you saw from Zzzz? Did you count the numer of times he was first on the puck, won a one on one battle, how far he carried the puck, how many shots he had (meaningful shots), how many hits (York, Yorks, Yorkie thinks he is very physical), and did cound how many times he fell on his ass?

What prosepcts have I been wrong about?

  10. PaV says:

Mike8888 – just save your posts in a word doc and just amend it accordingly each and every post. You can save the file names as follows:
    - Kary is bad
    - Kary is bad # 2
    - Kary is bad # 3
    - ZZZZZZZ # 1
    - ZZZZZZZ # 2
    - Hate for Senators Org # 1
    - Spezza is God # 1
    - Spezza is God # 2
    - Why I love the +/- stat

    Its really really easy.

  11. PaV says:

OD99 – did you know that the SENS were beat in every aspect of yesterday’s game? Did you know that the only reason we won was because of Andy? Did you also see ZZZZZZZ’s game? Did you also see that Kary wasn’t the reason we won?????!

Did you also know that before coming in to last nights game that Subaan has been a -12/-13 ???

  12. Bobby Goodman says:

I wonder why Conacher (17 pts, 13 assists) saw only 5:57 of ice-time last night?
Did he get hurt? Was the DAC unhappy with his play, courage…effort? What ever the reason, he still managed to earn an assist. The kid is another who bleeds on the ice and although he’s only 5-8, 180 pounds, he doesn’t float around the periphery waiting for a pass, he gets his nose dirty every shift and every game! Nor does he hurt the hockey club at plus 8!!! But for some inexplicable reason, this organization is totally committed to a double standard.

DaCosta only got 8:06 of ice-time; was he hurt as well? Was the DAC unhappy with his effort/play? Whatever the reason for the 8 minutes, he still managed to score 2 goals and put his slight body in harms way. He isn’t 6-2 and 208 pounds (according to Brownie, he is 5’11, 180).

Zzzz on the other hand, got 13:47 of ice-time and 2:00 minutes with the man advantage; Maclean must have been really inspired from what he saw – no goals, no assits, 1 shot, 1 “hit”. I seriously don’t get it; even Brown commented on Zzzzz’s inability to stay on his feet. But, many believe is is a great “prospect”.

Cowen, the behomoth who is 6-5 (Brownie keeps saying he’s 6-6) and weighing in at 230 didn’t have a single hit last night. Shouldn’t physicality be his stock in trade? Perhaps his inactivity could be one of the reasons the Blue Jackets outshot, outhit, had a gazillion more take aways etc than the Sens. The Sens had more goals, the most important number, but Columbus completely outplayed Ottawa last night.

Gryba on the other hand, had 6 hits. According to Potsie, he was told he had to be more physical!?

  13. Bobby Goodman says:

Dave, I am sorry, I never did respond to your post…of course a discussion and fair play is reasonable. Certainly we will have different opinons and that too is fair. I have been guilty of stooping to a fool’s level and will curb some if that!

Briefly, it was a great tournament for Fritsch and especially for Delaet. Delaet says he doesn’t like looking at his swing, he should know there have been many beautiful looking swings on the PGA Tour that failed! In slow motion, Delaet’s golf swing is absoluely great, he’s in all the right positions throughout and he does it in complete balance. And, he longue!!!! I hope he wins this year…I really like the kid. I think he must play play part-time ‘Ball for the Boston Red Sox!!!

  14. OD99 says:

Bobby come on you lose a bit of credibility when you say things like:

“He leads all D in points but he doesn’t lead in goals, he doesn’t lead in assists, nor does he lead in hits, take aways”

I mean come on we know you hate how he plays but you really think a good argument is that even though he leads the league in D points he doesn’t lead in either goals or assists? That is too much of a stretch even for you.

As for the give-aways he doesn’t lead in that category and if you happen to scroll down a bit and look at who is in the top 10-15 in D give-aways (even go back a few years) you see it is all top D for the most part. Chara, Doughty, Keith Seabrook, Subban, Yandle, Phaneuf. All of these guys give it away because they have the puck a lot.

Karlsson is also second in take-aways.

Dislike him all you want for how you believe he plays or competes but the stats you want to use to prop up your point generally fall flat.

Zibby is not getting points and not creating much lately I will give you that but I alwasy said his ceiling was Mike Fisher and I think he will get there.

  15. PaV says:

Oh the wise words of an immature child. Same posts different days.

Dave, don’t believe him, he says he is stooping to the fools level (aka me) but in reality (which he seems to live in a different one) we just stoop to his level.

  16. Bobby Goodman says:

I don’t know how I lose credibility but it truly doesn’t really matter to me Dave. I’m not on here to establish cred. Karly leads the D in one category, goals. Others have more points, assists, hits and better plus/minus (270). From my very biased perspective, his Tka are the result of the hard work of others who actually go into the corners. As for Gva, this must be a most recent change because he has lead for most of the year. I am not going back a couple of years, I are talking about the Ottawa Senators today. My point is it isn’t a single statistic, it a bunch of them that add up! that overwhelmingly point out he is a liability. The media (and fans) were brutally hard on Spezza for Gva, he never lead the team or league!

Karlsson leads in goals and fantastic. He just recently lost his lead in Gvaa but you have to look closer at that Stat. Karly has 10 more than Doughty, 20 more than Subban, 30 more than Chara and 32 more than Keith! These aren’t wonderful stats Dave. Karly has had a dependably steady decline in plus/minus all year! Did you know that he is now 272nd among the 284 defencemen in the NHL?! Only 12 defencemen are worse!

Karlsson is on the ice for more goals scrored against, than any other team mate, in spite of all the goals and assists. Why is that? Why are his numbers with the best in points but one of the league’s worse in plus/minus? I think it is entirely because he is only focussed on accumulating points and completly abandons his responsibilities as a defenceman (he is a 4th forward). And, he is just awful in his own end of the rink (but a leader in Tka?).

So, when you look at the stats acumulatively, it paints a picture of someone who, although entertaining (to some) is a liability to his team.

As for Zzzz, I suspect you weren’t too impressed with this game the other night and the comparison to Fisher is a a bit too much. Do mean Zzzz is a 3rd or 4th line center? I don’t think he is a centerman at all. He isn’t physical at all. Fisher was intimidating physically, could really skate, was steady on his feet, pursued the oposition relentlessly. Karly does none of that.

I believe a 4th line should be the crashers and bangers. From what I see, he isn’t a 3rd or a 4th line guy. His game the other night (most nights) was embarrassinly bad. The DAC will give him all the reps he needs though. Don’t you think Conacher and DaCosta deserved more time than they got. Wouldn’t you put Ryan on the ice for more PP time than Zzzz? Would you have him on to start any OT Dave?

Zzzz got his points early in the season. He doesn’t make plays and his number of assists is testimony. He wont and he can’t win one on one battles and he plays on the periphery.

I know you don’t like comparisons but why can Conacher be so damn aggressive but the 209 pound Zzzz not? Little Galagher in Montreal now has 14 goals and it is entirely because of his fiercely competitive play that’s totally absent in Zzzz.

  17. PaV says:

OD – not to mention that “KARLY” leads all D in the league on points. But that doesn’t mean anything when you are a -14 apparently.

  18. Bobby Goodman says:

I really enjoy what “Simmer” has to say and will, when I can, tune in when he is one. personally, I think he has far more meaningful things to say than Pierre McGuire! His breadth of knowlege is incredible and extends far beyond just hockey. As a history major I love to hear him talk. He understands the politics of other countries, their geograph etc. To listen to him talk about the challenges associated with Sochi was fascinating and educational. Even the challenges with just getting their! Most of the time he is candid but there are times, not often, when I think he toes the line!

There other day, listening to him in the car, he said Potvin and Brown were great and fans appreciate the familiarity/ continuity. I don’t think that’s true nor do I think he truly believes it.

I woud love to have others do the games. Perhaps Potvin’s presence is a pass for Brown to be a fool…I don’t know for sure. But, I hear a completely different “Dino” when he does a game not involving the Senators and by default, not with Potsie! He acutally can be…semi-quasi decent.

When he and Potvin do a game, it becomes amateur hour (as in a golf broadcast, I want the players to be the star/entertainment not the announcers). When B&P do a game, very penalty against the Senators is a horrendous call. The referees miss many obvious panalties, every game, that should be called on the other team. Everything the Sens do is celebrated. The other night Columbus was sloppy on one shift and the very nasal Potvin offered “what is this team doing”? If someone was only listening to the game, they would believe Ottawa dominated…they didn’t…they were totally out played and as difficult as it may be to accept (for one fool) Anderson won the game! The Blue Jackets had 36 shots to Ottawa’s 28, outhit them 35 to 20, was 8 to 2 in Tka and 43 to 25 at the dots….but who would know?

I grow very tired of the sillyness, lame jokes, overtly biassed one-sidedness, incessant inacuracy, ignoring bad play by a particular player (promotional campaign), but mostly the lack of candor/honesty. When I watch a game with Johnson, Ferarro or Debrusk and their mates, it’s entirely refreshing because they call the game the way it is really played all the good and bad.

Potvin and Brown are just plain God awful. Sean Simpson has to feel the same because his honesty in the assessment of the Sen’s players and play is poles apart from what is described in every game done by Brown and Potvin!

He says he grew up in the era of Danny Galavan and Dick Ervin, as did I but never would you hear the nonsense that goes on with B&P. They are shameless and should be forced to listen watch and listen to their games (personally, I would force personers doing hard time to listen to these guys).

There is no way in this world Simpson thinks they are great. I wonder, do most fans like their coverage, how does Simpson and Bell Media know that we fans enjoy them?

  19. PaV says:

I expect the SENS will have a strong outing tonight. Losing the last 3 to the hands of Bishop can’t sit well.

  20. ChokerHater says:

    QUOTE:PaV says:

OD – not to mention that “KARLY” leads all D in the league on points. But that doesn’t mean anything when you are a -14 apparently.
    =================================================================
you’re right, what good is a D man if he can’t help keep the puck out of his own net, isn’t that why they are called defenseman?
And I read that Spezza hasn’t scored a goal at even strength for about 20 games…..nice.
Looks like Phillips is gone soon, and the way Methot was treated he’ll want out too, but the new TV/radio contract will be spent……….maybe in a nice sunny climate……
Fun to watch an amateur team try to keep up with the big boys

  21. Bobby Goodman says:

Finally…finally the dumb Fool got it right Choke! Leading all “defencemen” in points doesn’t mean anything if your are -14….make that minus 15 ’cause he was minus one tonight. Indeed, “KARLY” got another easy one by the crease but he was also on the ice for two of the three goals scored against. It should be a simple concept to understand but we don’t have access to crayons for the Fool. Minus one means, how can I make this easy…you are on the ice for one more goals scored against than for and that doesn’t help the hockey club. With his minus 14…exuces me…his minus 15, is Karly now 273 out of 284 defencemen in the NHL with the worst plus/minus and only 11 defencemen in the entire league worse?

Damn it must be hard for the Fool to stomach Spezza getting two more points tonight! I wonder if we will read a Letter to the Editor in the Sun tomorrow praising his 39 points in 49 games played mostly with those who are not…blessed talent wise. The “Shooter” had another shot (singular) tonight! He had one “hit”. He is a boat anchor who does diddley squat. We see far more from Conacher and even DaCosta than we do Zzzz. Yet, he got praise from Potsie: “Zibanisbad has played every position but defence and goalie”…who hasn’t?

Will the Sun or the other paper right a story how the Sen’s Captain with his 39 points is ahead of Backes, Stastny, Oreilly, Dubinsky, Bergeron, Couture, Spepan, Mikko Koivu, Mike Richards, Johanson, Datsyuk…………and they don’t play with Zzzzzz.

  22. OD99 says:

You know Pav I think that myself, Bobby, you and Choke probably look ridiculous on here a lot of the time when we engage each other. Sometimes I give my head a shake and realize we are all grown men but for some reason on here we act like children. Mike generally stays above the fray and Vis, et all are sometimes hit and miss.

I know Bobby is passionate and while I don’t agree with many of his thoughts many of them are legitimate – I just think he takes them to the extreme so I can’t fully agree with in the context he puts them. I don’t doubt for a second he wants the team to succeed as much as we do.

You are passionate as well, and so am I. Even Choke in his way is passionate about being anti-Senators.

Bobby, you are right and credibility was the wrong choice of words. I guess what I mean is you have merit to your thoughts on Karlsson and he isn’t perfect so you don’t have to try and create items to criticize him over. If Spezza led the league in points just imagine what you would say if came on here and said, “Sure he leads the league in points but he doesn’t lead in goals or assists”.

Seriously, what do you think you would say to that? You would lose your mind.

You are also looking at some incorrect stats because Karlsson leads D in points and is tied for goals with Webber.

I suggest going back a few years on the gva because it presents a more complete picture of which D generally give the puck away and not surprisingly it is usually the top D in the league. It was only a few years ago Pronger led D in gva while Chara was 3rd – would you suggest they are terrible in their own end?

This is the part that gets frustrating in our discussions. So Karlsson leading in tka is a mirage, him near the top in gva (along with all the other top D in the league) is a damning statistic against him but is ignored against Doughty (he has 9 more gva than Doughty over 54 games so less than 0.5gva a game) and any other D you like. This is also similar to Cowen being 4th in hits yet not delivering them to the same scale as others.

You bring up stats but always have some excuse why they are or aren’t valid based on your opinion.

And before I bring up the next one I will say that I have always liked Spezza and I am very happy to see he seems to be over his injury but this direct quote for Karlsson can be easily used to critique Spezza’s play:

“Others have more points, assists, hits and better plus/minus” Spezza is 232nd in plus/minus with only Cammalleri and Ott worse.

I could add goals to that and also point out he is 5th in gva (not surprisingly the players ahead of him are Kessel, Thornton, Getzlaf and Tavares). I know you have a reason why all of those negatives aren’t his fault though, correct?

So again, you can like dislike Karlsson’s game all you want but your stats don’t prove anything other than he is mostly the same as all the other top D currently in the league and the ones that came before him.

  23. OD99 says:

    Bobby.

Of course I think it is crazy that Zibby gets more PP time than Ryan or Turris some times but I don’t think it is intentional really. Sometimes the flow of the game dictates a player won’t get as much ice time, etc…

I also haven’t seen any games yet this week so can’t make specific comments but from what I watched all year I really doubt Zibby didn’t do anything good at all.

Lastly Zibby being Fisher isn’t a stretch. Fisher was a 50ish point guy with 20 goals and I think he will do that soon. I also think he over state Fisher’s physical play – he wasn’t feared by any means but he was more of puck hound.

  24. PaV says:

Choke – you must live in the same reality as Bobby :)

Bobby Goodman says: January 27, 2014 at 2:32 pm
So Mikey, lets watch tomorrow night and lets watch the games versus Tampa and Toronto this week. I suspect the team may win one of the three.

Hey Mike8888 – we won yesterday, so based on the above – it proves that all Bobby does is just come on here and trash our team. Shows very little how much he truly knows.

Oh wait, it will be a “we lost because Bishop left the game” rant forthcoming.

  25. Bobby Goodman says:

Isn’t it interesting that on the same day, 2 different news papers have a story dedicated to Spezza, the Captain of the Ottawa Senators. The stories are not printed to celebrate him at all of course, the focus of the two stories are dedicated to his minus 19 rating!

I am left wondering how the Sun and Ottawa Citizen manage to come up with the same idea for a story (indeed, stories)…on the same day(s). But I really wonder why Spezza?

If there is going to be a articles written that are not complimentary (which alarmingly happens far too often), why wouldn’t the entire story be told? Spezza is a point per game in over the 600 games in the NHL he is in the plus column. This year is one of the rare years he isn’t a plus player and if the “Sports Experts” really wanted to expose the truth, they would tell more of the story.

After coming off back surgery where he missed most of the year (from which many say, players are never really the same) the Captain has 39 points in 49 games but who has he played with? Unlike top players with most NHL teams, Spezza has played mostly with the unskilled (to say the least). His line mates have been:

    - Michalek, minus 21
    - Zibanisbad, minus 10
    - Conacher, plus 8
    - Smith, minus 3
    - Condra, plus 1
    - Greening, minus 9
    - Neil, minus 9
    - Stone, minnus 1
    - Pageau, minus 5 and
    - Grant, minus 3

Of these linemates he was blessed to play with, none of them can be described as great wingers, can they? Of the many who he was blessed to play with, the ones in the negative column have accumulated a total of minus 60! He hasn’t played with them all the time but he hasn’t played with anyone in particular all the time! Those who might have been good for him are on another line and that combination should never be changed but Conacher, the guy who is forgotten and at times will see less than 6 minutes in a game is plus 8, but he got all of 3 games with Spezza.

The Coach and the Organization believe that their Captain is best suited to play with those who don’t compliment his game. What was ineresting last night was Potvin took great care to say that DaCosta is a very smart player who will put the puck where his linemates should be but off times aren’t; I have never heard do the same for Spezza. Why?

Zibanisbad, the player the Sens have invested heavily in, doesn’t go after the puck, the “Shooter” doesn’t get in positions to get great feeds from Spezza (again he had a single shot last night). Michalek and Zzzzz in particular are not scoring goals nor are they setting them up but his is who Spezza is now playing with. If he was playing with some who could score or were creative, his numbers would be much better.

But if this story is going to be told, why not give Karlsson equal time? He plays mostly with the best (every Spezza and Turris line shift), yet, has the 11th worst plus/minus rating among defencement in the league!

What will the 2 papers share tomorrow?

Bob, I agree basically with your comments about Dean Brown and Denis Potvin. When Dean isn’t trying to be a comedian, he is quite good. I am very disappointed with Denis’s contributions. He is certainly quite annoying to listen to and I am surprised he isn’t more insightful. Having said that, I would prefer Brown over the most over-rated announcer Chris Cuthbert. To be honest, there has not been a truly great Canadian announcer since Danny Gallivan. Bill Hewitt would sound pretty good today.

With respect to the team 1200 on air personalities, the glass is half full approach all the time and how wonderful everyone is makes for boring radio. Simpson can be good at times but I can’t understand the love affair with Maguire. He never has an honest opinion on any issue that may be controversial or might be a bit negative about a player, coach or GM.

It would be nice if there was a talk show that was honest, frank and up front about everything and not just pom pom shakers.

Sens can go deep in the playoffs if Murray makes a minimum of one good move. As I said a few weeks ago, the Eastern conference does not have any true superior teams. Mediocricy rules. Does Tampa look like an elite team? No!!! Is Boston really that good? No, just ask Montreal. Pitt has alot of clunker games and teams like the Rangers, the Blue Jackets and Philly are certainly not forces to reckon with.

Oh yes, it is clear that Spezza “has to play better 5 on 5…right? But, does he really and if so, how can he with the players he has at his side?

Forget about all the others he has been blessed to play with (Conacher was one I thought should have stayed) lets just examine Michalek and Zzzz. Who demanded that they need to be better PERIOD let alone 5 on 5? Does everyone still buy into the fiction that Zzzz is an….offensive player. He and Michalek skate alongside Spezza and together in 99 games the 2 have amassed a total of just 43 points and are collectively minus 31! Is this too on Spezza? Lets compare those numbers to what Turris’ linemates have done: 84 points, plus 27 in 107 games!

Someone, anyone please share with me how Spezz….anyone could make Michalek and in particular Zzzzz better. How in the world can he be better 5 on 5 with these two by his side! Moreover, Karly is on almost everytime Spezza is on the ice and he is both lousy in his own end and caught up the ice many times every game (again last night he was on the ice for 2 of the 3 goals scored against) ! It is a double wammy, he has Michalek and Zzzz and he has the 4th forward with him all the time (notice how absent Karlsson is when Smitty or the 4th line is on the ice).

If Spezza is supposed to be better 5 on 5, is it fair to ask that he be given some who are on the same page, can compliment his game, possess some skill, can creat opportunities and finish, are willng to pay the price and make an effort?

Someone, anyone share with me other top line centers in the league who play with players like Michalek and Zzzz.

It fascinates me that Don and the guy from the other paper will demand that Spezza be better 5 on 5; shouldn’t that apply to others as well? The PP doesn’t go if Spezza is not there! It is the only time he gets to play with some who are skilled, who can anticipate, creat and make a good pass etc. He’s registerd 15 of his 39 points on the PP about 39% of his total points. Karlsson has registered 24 of his 51 points on the PP which works out to approximately 48% of his total points. If my math is close, why shouldn’t Karly be better 5 on 5? Why is Spezza the only one on the Team singled out?

I had a discussion the other day with my hockey mad niece who loves the Sens but she doesn’t like Spezza. When I asked her why she brought up rumours from 10 years sgo. She said he should be able to make Zzz and others better (no one can make Zzzz better). She said he was arrogant and conceited, but couldn’t really tell me how. When pressed about Karly’s conceit and arrogance and his treatment of the media (who all love him regardless of how bad he may behave) she paused and offered: “he has earned the right to be the way he is and do what he does”.

Sadly, this is the power the media have. With a key strokes they have the ability to forge public opinion! We see examples of manipulation here on this blog, in Letters and in the boos.

  28. Bobby Goodman says:

The attack on the Captain of the Ottawa Senators is relentless and incessant. Today, Helmer offers his report card for the month, not only was it predictable it was flawed. Spezza is always a target for sure but he was way off he mark on others as well!

Jason Spezza earned a solid 7 out of 10 for the month, I guess he should be happy, he earned a 6 in December. I wonder if fans actually look at the numbers; I WONDER IF WRITERS DO? Do people actually consider that Spezza has 39 points and his 39 points is only 3 less than Turris, MacArthur and Ryan? Spezza’s 39 points was accomplished in 49 games, not 54, 54 and 53 games (the members of the top line)! Spezza has more assists than Turris who skates with Ryan and MacArthur who have 20g and 18g respectivley where as Spezza has Zzzz and Michalek with Michalek who have 10 and 7!

Spezza has earned a solid 7, but his linemate, Zibanisbad was celebrated for his futility with an 8!? Why, because “there is plenty to like about the kid’s game”!!!! It must be his skating, creativity, goal scoring (which has been in hibernation since November), work ethic, ability to win one on one battles, compete leve, his minus 9l!!!

Zzzz gets an 8 but Zack Smith earns 7? Smitty gets all the tough assignments, kills penalties, is very physical, only -3 and has 10 goals playing with the likes of Greening and Neil who are both -9!

Hemler rewards Conacher with 6 out of 10 in spite of his passion/intensity, numbers and reliability +8! He plays “anywere from the 2nd to 4th line”, doesn’t get the “soft” assignments, never sees time with the teams best and yet, he is only 4 points behind Zzzz and is +8 compared to Zzzz’s -10!? HE HELPS THE TEAM, HE DOESN’T HURT THEM!!!!!

Ah, but the plus/minus stat is only considered to support a particular case. Whereas Spezza will be hounded for his minus 19 (playing with Zzz and Michalek who are -10 and – 21 respectively) Karly’s plus/minus is NEVER EVEN MENTIONED! WHY? I wonder if Hemler even knows that Karly is only 4 short of Spezza’s “ugly -19″ (is minus 15 pretty)? Do the readers and fans know that out of 284 defencemen in the entire league, only 11 have worse a plus/minus that Karly? Of course they don’t because it is totally ignored! Karly again, earns a 9.5! Karly is God awful as a defenceman, God awful in his own end (most of time he doesn’t even try) and he too gets all the good assignments. He is on for the bulk of every PP and most of the time he’s with Spezza and Turris lines (when there’s ample opportunity to get points).

Chris Neil gets 7.5 for taking bad penalties and being minus 9!???

Methot gets 7.5 and he is always up against the other teams best. What would he have to do to earn a 9.5? Should he be minus 15 like Karly? Should he be better than plus 4? When asked if he was hurt should he have joined the DAC in the lie?

The “report card” is nonsense and my report card on the report card earns is 3.333290001/10.

After a nice long period of nasty name calling Dave, reasonable, teaching, preaching Dave has resurfaced! Bravo!Educate oh learned one!

  30. KevinF says:

Dan I agree that Brown is fine, I don’t mind him at all when he is doing non Sens CBC games, Potvin pure and simple is a unprofessional mess. That Brown constantly feeds and cowtows to him, because he was a great player, makes the broadcast unlistenable. Hopefully TSN brings in a guy who can add something to a broadcast! maybe even challenge Deano when he drifts to the extreme homer ism he is prone to. Ferraro comes to mind, I wish he was doing Leaf games rather than the God awful Millen.

  31. chokerhater says:

That was one hell of a display tonight
    DISGUSTING
    up 2-0 and lose 6-3
so the Leafs scored 6 goals while you scored 1
Great goalie, and a great display by a “suspect” Norris trophy winner
Anyone who wants to make smart remarks about Kessel should probably hold their collective tongues!
    This team sucks

Since some players in the NFL have come out gay? When is the shoe falling on the NHL? There have to be gay players in the sport?
