Bobby Ryan not happy

- January 2nd, 2014

Bobby Ryan might be disappointed he’s not going to Sochi.

He’s even more upset with comments on ESPN.com by Calgary president Brian Burke from the Team USA meetings that indicate the Senators winger isn’t going because he doesn’t have enough “intensity” in his game.

Reacting for the first time since being snubbed Wednesday, Ryan told a throng of reporters Thursday at the Canadian Tire Centre he didn’t like what Burke had to say in the comments that were revealed to a reporter who was given all access by USA Hockey.

“They were direct quotes and it’s unfortunate they feel that way,” said Ryan. “That’s their opinions and they’ve got to form a team. I guess to a certain degree you have to respect it.

“You don’t have to agree with it, right? But you could have just cut me. You didn’t have to … Actually I almost feel degraded when it comes out like that. It is what it is. That’s their decision. That’s how they feel about it. I will remember it and use it as motivation.”

Ryan said he will spend the second half trying to show he should have been invited.

“It makes you want to prove them wrong,” said Ryan. “I spent the first half trying to prove them wrong. I felt I was the odd man out _ even in the summer in my conversations.
“I did my best. I felt I took a pretty good run at it but ultimately fell short. That’s what I’ll try to do in the second half.”

At first glance Burkes comments regarding Ryan seem unnecessary and harsh. I could be wrong, but my understanding is that they were made in meetings of the committee of hockey people assembled by David Poile at which two reporters were allowed to sit in on as long as they didn’t report until after the roster announcement. In this context what could be expected, but frank honest opinions be given about potential players? As always Burke says much more then necessary to convey his thoughts, but that’s who he is. He has experience with Ryan and that’s his opinion and he shared it with his colleagues. It would have been best if this kind of thing was kept behind closed doors but someone thought it was a good idea to give ESPN and USA Today a inside view of the process. After reading both accounts for some reason there seemed to be many more involved who had reservations about Ryan.
Personally I love Ryan as a player, and he would definetly be on my team. Sometimes these teams are over thought and over managed. Take your best 20 players and forget about trying to slot players into roles, pure talent wins out most of the time. This over thinking led to a guy like Rob Zamanur (sp) being named to Team Canada. I’d rather JVR and Kessel weren’t going to be honest a serious injury to either would be a disaster for Leaf playoff hopes.

I sometimes think hockey management types forget that you still need to score goals to win games. Stick Ryan on a third line. I don’t know.

Bruce, it could have been handled better that’s for sure. I know I pile on, and it’s fun to do so, but Ryan probably deserved a spot on the team. I took the time to re-write “Barbara Ann” by the Beach Boys for Bobby.

Bobby Ryan, with apologies to the Beach Boys:

Bob Bob Bob Bob Bobby Ryan, Bob Bob Bob Bob Bobby Ryan
    Bobby Ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan oooooooooooooooooooooh Bobby Ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan
    Come to my laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand

You guys us scoring and a winning, scoring and a winning Bobby Ryan
Bob Bob Bob, Bob Bobby Ryan, Bob Bob Bob Bob Bobby Ryan

Oh Bobby Ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan Ooooh Bobby Ryaaaaaaaaaaan
    Bobby Ryaaaaaaaaaaaan Bobby Ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan

Went to CTC, to see Cody Ceci
Heard Brian Burke oh my gawd he’s such a jerk
Oh Bobby Ryan Oh Bobby Ryaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan
You got us scoring a winning, scoring and a winning Bobby Ryan

  4. PaV says:

USA is going to miss Ryan on their team. My money is on that blow hard Burke just being him self.

Here is hoping for a win tonight.

    Go Sens Go

  5. Biagio says:

First I dont know why a guy like Burke was given this position he loves the limelight and his ego is bigger than ever.
Bobby Ryan may sure as well be all those things but have some class and control yourself, you dont always have to be the show!!! Weather Ryan is all those things is crap he still scores and his play here in Ottawa has been real good. He’s also not trying to fill in Alphies shoes and he knows it,no one should have been insulted like this for whatever reason team USA decided to do this.

  6. Bobby Goodman says:

When a Hall of Gamer like Modano is totally confused by the decision to leave Bobby of the team, you know there is a problem. I have always believed a line can get away with one player who is not the fastest, as long as the other two are. Bobby Ryan is a gifted in every other aspect of the game and would compliment many different line combinations. As the 3rd longest tenured GM in the NHL, David Poile has done nothing for Nashville; he did have some Russians, Choo Choo but the team has not challenged and it wont. But, he is another brilliant GM. Burke…enogh said…he may have an eye for talent but they were skirts and are 25 years younger!

  7. Mike8888 says:

I’d rather have Ryan on my fourth line then someone like Callahan. It sounds like Ryan will use it as motivation, and the break certainly won’t hurt him. One has to wonder why he was on the 2010 team unless it was totally because of the smaller ice. Was he faster or did he have a better work ethic in 2010? I think not.

  8. PaV says:

Well three in row. Cue the Senile Old Man Rant (SOMR) for short.

Bring on the more ‘talented’ Habs. I wonder what dress Girlontia will be wearing.

  9. Bobby Goodman says:

You have to wonder if someone representing the USA Olympic Team might have a chat with Lord Burke? I am sure most would agree he is out of control. He doesn’t take the high road and simply offer the selection committee believe the team would be better served by having a player with more speed, no, he has to go out of his way to shame a player and (again) himself. Of course the fool didn’t stop there; he went on to say that “if Yandle was one of our top 4 defencemen, the opposition would all be very happy”!

I was confused (and it is so easy to do) by Calgary’s decision to hire Lord Burke but I wonder now if they have second thoughts! Bell and Rogers were disgusted by the fool’s behaviour, that’s one of the reasons they fired him, can his behaviour this year make the Organization proud? I don’t think so.

The Fool makes it far too easy for me. Wasn’t he the one who called them small, slow, cowards, talentless and iligitimate? But, they have 7 more points than the Sens!? The Habs beat a good team in the Dallas Stars last night, 3-2. Suckubban was in on all 3 goals scoring one himself and adding 2 assists. His assists weren’t cheap ones (secondary, rebounds or from passes inside his own blueline) they were the result of fantastic skating and stickhandling! They were brilliant assists and his goal was even brilliant-er! He ended the night with plus 2 and is now plus 10 for the year.

Someone should point out to the Fool that Plus is better than Minus (it can be a difficult concept to grasp I know). While Suckubban had a very good night last night, the Fool’s personal Champion, Karly, not so much. But didn’t we predict that was going to be the case? Karly had a single shot on net (from well outside) he didn’t lead a rush, never made an effort, didn’t get a goal or an assist (not even a cheap one) and was on the ice and stood around for 2 of Winnipeg’s 3 goals scored! It wasn’t a noble effort at all.

Suckubban now has 7g, 26a for 33 points on a small, slow, gutless, unskilled and iligitimate hockey club! Karly picks a chooses when he wants to show up, always against soft teams. He spends all his energy (he has lots to spare because he rarely takes it out of 2nd gear) entirely focussed on accumulating points! he leads the entire league in give aways by 7 with 61! And he now has 254 defencemen with better plus/minus! But, fans are supposed to jump to the stores and buy a Sweater! While he is minus 10 for the year, Suckubban is plus 13! But why let facts get in the way of a good story. Karly is a King. He is a community leader. The best defen…the best player in the NHL! Why, because the Sens organization and by default, the local media, all say he is!

Methot must enjoy his new gig; he doesn’t have to defend against Karly anymore. He earned a point and was plus one last night.

Any bets Boyle (-1) will be on the Team Canada. Any bets Suckuban wont? I would have Skinner on the team, 30 pts in 30 games (19g).

  10. Bobby Goodman says:

Don, indeed there is something wrong with Karly. He has his nose out of joint because you had he gaul to quote him on his “quitting” in a game. You committed treason by poking a little fun at him by offering advice to let it go (explanaions made it worse).

Karly is egotistical and immature, we have seen it with comments like: “I am not an effin’ God” and “shit happens”. So you shouldn’t be surprised by his refusal to grant you an interview. I wonder what might he have done and how he’d behaved if he had to endure the treatment Spezza has been exposed to…for years???? Perhaps it is time to start calling him out for his behaviour and his play!!!!!!

  11. PaV says:

So team USA apologized to Bobby Ryan. Burkie is a blowhard and should step down, but he won’t. It oil be classic is Team USA tanks it at The Olympics.

  12. ChokerHater says:

    Ha!
Good to see Bobby went out and showed them last night. No goals, no assists, no nothing. Man he’s intense.

Burke is a lot of things, he’s a loud mouthed jerk, flashy, bombastic, and irritating, but he knows talent, and if Burke said it, it’s probably right. Still not any way to treat an NHL player, but he is not wrong.
That’s the only reason he was available to Ottawa, you don’t actually think Murray stole him do you?

    ============================================================================
almost makes you want to cheer for the US team
but I’ll stick with Canada 1st and the US 2nd
but he really showed he was intense last night
    I N T E N S E
    spell it Bobby

  14. PaV says:

The senile old man forgets that Subaan is immature, childish and lacks humility. Hence the hold out for a contract, hence being called out by Hall Gill when he threw his jersey on the floor. Hence the lack of congratulations when he singed last year for his teammates…. Yeah class all the way. Same crap being spewed, just a different day… Ole ole ole

  15. PaV says:

Oh.. Forgot to add that the senile old man is the one that called the Habs more talented and much bigger that the Sens when we walked over then last playoffs. The SOM seems to forget that all he did that playoff run was point out how injured they were…. The SOM forgets that we took the Habs to task this year once already. The SOM should realize that he is too old for this game and it’s passing him by.

    Ole ole ole

  16. Bruce Garrioch says:

Pav. Let’s stop this routine and keep the commments above board. Thank you.

  17. Bobby Goodman says:

Choke, perhaps I am missing something but isn’t Ryan having a good year and well on his way to scoring 35 goals? Isn’t Bobby Ryan in double digits for plus/minus? And, isn’t he 2nd on the team in scoring? I am not sure what Lord Burke means by “intensity” but if Ryan doesn’t possess it, I don’t think it is a bad thing! Does Lord Burke think Kessel playes with intensity (voted by the players as the easiest to intimidate). What about Kadri and Bozak? I like them too but are they “intense”? Did Burke like the intensity in Connolly’s game, Finger?

Lord Burke has most fooled; just because he is loud, obnoxious, egotistical and dumb as spit, it doesn’t make him smrt. He was fired by Toronto and you don’t think Calgary stole him, do you?

Burke has managed to parlay his gong show act into something different. It isn’t like his record in Toronto was good, it wasn’t, in fact it was very bad. He finished his time in Torotno with a 129 – 135 – 41 record and didn’t make it to the post season! But he knows talent…really? I don’t know about you Choke but I wasn’t impressed with the shameless jerk’s moves that include:

    Primeau
    Axelby
    Beauchemin
    Giggy
    Scrivens
    Gustavsson
    Rynnas
    Finger
    Colborne
    Conolly
    Lonbardi
    Hanson
    Bent
    Komnisarek

There are many more of course, but suffice to say, his moves didn’t make the team a contender. I would still rather have Seguin than Kessel. Loud, dumb and shameless enough to want to make it all very public doesn’t make someone inteligent.

Yes, Karly and Suckubban will face eachother tonight! I was wrong about Suckubban’s performance the other day against the Stars, he din’t score a goal and assist on two…he scored a goal and assited on 3! Like Karly here in Ottawa, he leads his team in scoring with 33 points. The 33 points is remarkable when you consider the next player on his team has but 25 (that’s around 8 pts less, give or take). Karly has 38 points, 2 more than “sleepy” Ryan. After Karly, there are 4 players on the Sens with more points than Paccioretty (who is second on team scoring in Montreal)! The entire Candien’s hockey club has 109 goals compared to the Sens 122! Some…one here might attribute the lower number by the Habs on their lack of talent, that would be wrong of course. The Fool will suggest the team are full of cowards who are small, slow and iligitimate, that would be wrong too. The 109 goals scored by the Habs has more to do with the Coach and GM insisting the players (Suckubban included) be responsible in their own end and all over the ice. The Sens, don’t have to be. Suckubban’s +14 is a testiment to his responsible play and even a Fool has to wonder what he could do if he only focussed on padding his stats in the easy games.

  18. PaV says:

Bruce, sure. But the immature nicknames and the insane rants are ok? Cool.

  19. ChokerHater says:

Finally, PaV gets told to stop calling people names. He calls Subban immature and then runs around calling others names.

Subban will make the Canadian Olympic team, who on Ottawa will, no one. Yes he is young, and he won’t play first pair d-men time, but he will play, and he will play for Canada for a long time
I wonder if bobby will show some intensity tonight?

  20. KevinF says:

I don’t read Bobs comments for previously established reasons, don’t care who bangs who,but of course my eyes were drawn to the list and I knew what it was. Full of errors and misinformation as usual.
Finger was not signed by Burke. Glad you weren’t impressed by that one.
Primeau, Brent and Exelby are the type of veteran fiiller journey men that every rebuilding team pass through their roster when they are truly rebuilding.
Scrivens Bozak Rynnas Gustavsson Hanson were all non drafted free agents wh cost nothing but money, Bozak has been very good, Scrivens, will likely have a decent career and was a important pert of the deal that landed Bernier, even Gus is still in the league. Pretty good return on a relative pittance of MLSE multi millions.
Giggy and Lombardi were deals involving contracts, Giggy to get rid of Jason Blake and Lombardi was taken on to get Franson for nothing but money. Giggy played well and was a great influence on the organization.
Connolly and Komi, Armstrong and Liles contracts were terrible and illustrate what In my opinion is Burkes biggest weakness besides talking too much, rewarding and overvaluing veterans.
Beauchemin is a very interesting case in that while he was not very good as a Leaf, his contract was not terrible, he was voted 4th in the Norris last year given that he is not a point acculmalator that’s remarkable. Oh and he yielded Joffrey Lupul and Jake Gardiner in trade. Ironically he is exactly apiece the Leafs need right now.
Burke is far from perfect and as a person or a manager and I don’t “love” him. But to not not recognize that the the Leafs are far better off now than when he took over is plain stupid, pure and simple. Very young team, scouting and farm totally rebuilt, still a work in process.

  21. KevinF says:

Left out Colborne, traded Kaberle for a highly regarded prospect and a 1 st , even if neither work out it’s still a wash.

  22. Bobby Goodman says:

I read em all so I can get a perspective on how and why people think the way they do. It is surprising that Kevin doesn’t because he and I share many of the same views on issues! Kevin is a smart hockey guy and that’s why I’m still not sure why Kevin has so much respect for Lord Burke. Perhaps Kevin is a far better individual than I am, I can’t divorce disgusting behaviour from ones job (to me it offers insight into someone’s character). It matters not that Lord Burke is a loud, obnoxious, angry, vulgar, egotestical cad who enjoys the spotlight or that he is a lousy GM. I don’t get it, but. I don’t have to.

  23. TerryC says:

Who cares about Ryan, He’s an American playing for the U.S. You’ll be singing a different tune if he was on the U.S. team and scored the winning goal over Canada in the gold medal game.
