Methot a healthy scratch

- January 23rd, 2014

TAMPA _ Marc Methot will be a healty scratch tonight.
Wow, what a downfall. Seriously. Not sure what has happened here that’s gone to the pressbox. He was one of the club’s top defencemen and now he can’t make the lineup? This is a guy who is used in ads as one of the core players.
He was upset and he was angry after practice Wednesday.
He was much more quiet Thursday and has accepted the decision even if he doesn’t like it. Methot made it clear he doesn’t want to be traded.
Coach Paul MacLean said he didn’t want to change a winning lineup.
“I love playing here and I want to be a part of this team,” said Methot. “Obviously when it comes down to a decision like that I’ve got respect it.
“The team played very well in Washington and whenever they need me to play I will be ready.”
Methot said it isn’t easy.
“Obviously it’s tough,” he said. “As a player you’re competitive and you don’t want to be told you’re not good enough to play or whatever it is.
“I want to play. The team played well. It’s not fair to any of the guys on the back end to take them out if they’ve all done their job last game.”
MacLean said he didn’t want to make changes to the lineup.
“Marc appears like he has recovered from the injury when he missed practice but the team goes on the road and plays well we have to reward Patrick Wiercioch and Eric Gryba. We thought they both played well in Washington game and deserve to play again,” said MacLean.

Must be something that we don’t know about, and the press won’t talk about, because he has been the steadiest of all the defensemen on the team. Maybe someday we’ll find out the truth

Is this kind of belligerent behaviour now allowed

Man Bobby you are a tool plain and simple. Like OD said, an idiot. Like the village idiot who deserves his own Island. We can send Choke with you as well. Let’s be clear here, you know nothing about the game. Your posts are repetitive, insulting and childish. Give it up. Everyone on here thinks you are a tool. I equate you to a troll who goes to other team blogs and insults them.

I think PaV is a blind idiot, but I’ve never posted that…..we were told to be gentlemen here

  2. PaV says:

Methot should have kept his mouth shut. The team earned a shutout last game, why change the line up.

Here is the projected comments if the SENS win:

    1) Karly was horrible. Spezza was the best on the ice. The team was crap, we only won because St. Louis had the flu and he wasn’t playing at full capacity.

Here is the projected comments is the SENS lose:

    1) Karly was horrible. Spezza was the best of the ice. The team lost because Karly set up 5 own goals and was a -3 tonight.

  3. Bobby Goodman says:

Is this yet another case of silly bugger Bruce? The Coach tolled effectively said he kept Methot out of the last game because he was hurt…we now know that wasnt’ it at all, don’t we. Methot, when asked said he was good to go (I guess he should have lied).

If I was Marc I would pissed off too! Here is a guy who was the only defencemen who played well in the Ranger game, even scored a goal and then sits the next two?

If the DAC was honest the first time he sat, there wouldn’t be a predicament. Its this silliness that persists. The Coach says his moves are made only to help the team win…we know that is quite true is it. He says the best players and that isn’t true either.

For the Fools, Methot should have pulled a Karly and not say a word…he could have cussed out loud and that would have been fine too or, he could admit he hadn’t been trying…that too is acceptable. He didn’t do that, but he did say he was good to go which was contradicted the DAC.

Oh and Choke my friend…I always consider the source. If nasty things were said from people I respect, it would bother me but……….

  4. ChokerHater says:

Maybe you better lay off the bottle PaV, you and Rob Ford could go into rehab together. :)
The more posts you make, the more rude and belligerent you get
People on here have the right to their own opinion
If Tampa wins, I say it was all Ben Bishop
If Tampa loses, I say it was that Tampa took these softies too lightly

  5. Bobby Goodman says:

Potsie said that Spezza “played a pretty good game and for that he is rewarded with Zibanisbad joining him on his line”. I am sure the Captain would have preferred he wasn’t so blessed. He played a great game and then he was saddled with a Zzzzz. The poor kid is useless. Spezza got two assists, should have had more and he registered 5 shots on net. It is time to put some hockey players on his line don’t you think?

The “Shooter” didn’t have an assist, didn’t get a goal, had one shot and didn’t register a single hit. This to some here is just great. He was on the outside all game long and half of that time he was on his ass. He didn’t win a single battle and again…never ventured into a corner first to retrieve a puck (but hey, he may develop into….something). Zzzzz couldn’t even get the puck out of his own end when to his horror he found it on his stick that led to a goal scored against. Moments before that he was flat on his back in the other teams end and he floated all the way back. For the great game he played…….he even got some PP duty. “The best get to play” indeed.

DaCosta, who some simply “LOVE” playing with the big club didn’t get a goal, didn’t register an assist nor did he even have a shot on net! This, his 3rd visit to Ottawa is turning out to be identical to the other two stints with the team.

  6. PaV says:

Choke up till yesterday I do not think you could spell ‘blind idiot’.
I am just stooping down to your and Bobby’s level.

    Ole ole ole

Picked up a point yesterday but we lost. So cue the rant. Both Spez and EK picked up 2 points but it will be EKs fault to why we lost.

  7. Mike8888 says:

The Methot issue was discussed yesterday on 1200 & what they said made sense. It was suggested that if Methot hadn’t complained to the press after being scratched for the Washington game, he would have probably played last night. MacLean scratched him again because he was making a statement re who was in charge, and by Methot’s statement yesterday, apparently it was message received.

  8. ChokerHater says:

Well I won’t stoop to your low life level

One point, in a pretty weak game against one of the best goalies in the NHL (where did he come from again?)
.500 means you miss the playoffs by a lot, was EK a plus or a minus again?

  9. Bobby Goodman says:

Choke, it doesn’t really matter. It doesn’t matter if the team hovers around the .500 mark. In fact, a true fan shouldn’t even care! It doesn’t matter that the team will, in all probability, will miss the post season…yet again, afterall, Murray armed with a two year extension will win the Cup in 2016 and those words are enough for most! How he will do it shouldn’t even be questioned, as Pierre noted, after 30 some odd years in the league and no Stanley Cup the GM may find his game in the twilight of his career (even though there is nothing in the bank).

It doesn’t matter at all that the Sens, continue to allow more goals scored against them than 26 other teams in the 30 team league (I think that some of the many faniacs should cue a rant about that…don’t you?). And…this, as the press have ignored, is the 3rd year of the 3 year rebuild when the Sens are supposed to “compete with the League’s best! Remember those words?

After 50 games played this year, shouldn’t the DAC and DAACs have come up with something to stem the flood of goals scored on them? Is it wrong to even point it out? Isn’t the idea to have more goals scored for than against? What are the “systems” the DAC uses…can they even be described at all or is the catch-all “Systems” enough? Is the DAC justified putting Zzzz on the PP? Is it smart to put him on with Michalek to start in overtime (no one seems to object to it). Is is smart to promote, for the 3rd time, DaCosta? What…really…did the DAC expect? Does everyone agree with sitting down Methot? If they do, why? He bleeds for the Team on the ice! Whereas he was once minus 8 playing with Karly, he is now down to minus 2 playing with others! He is infinitely better than the “Big Rig” and his minus 5!!! Why did the DAC “reward” Spezza with Zzzz last night? I suspect it wasn’t to reward Spezza at all, but rather it was an obvious move to give Zzzz an opportunity to do something…anything! It failed of course. But, will we continue to see Zzzzz play…your damn straight we will!

To Pierre’s point (and you were right on yet again mon ami) what about Lehner? We all know he is a very competitive guy, is he content to sit and watch? I can only imagine how it might be eating him up to ride the pines. The guy comes in (his last game) gets a shutout and then sits the next 3 games. Now some may say that’s good coaching, I wouldn’t. I want those “playing the best” to play. I could be wrong but I suspect Lehner’s 2.54 goals against average and .925 save percentage is better than Anderson’s 3.08 and .905.

PIERRE, I’M SORRY I “WILL” TYPE SOME MORE EVEN THOUGH SOME GUY NAMED AJ IS COMING THROUGH THE DOOR WIELDING AN APPEAL TO AUTHORITY FALLACY! APPARENTLY THE COACH ISN’T ALWAYS RIGHT!

Yep, this is another Rant. I wish others cared as much, demanded more and objected to what is going on. I wish these issues could be discussed instead of the fall back “you are a hater” thing.

  10. Bobby Goodman says:

Sorry Murph…..it was YOU who introduced the Lehner thing. And of course you would…afterall, you’re a goalie and you backstopped a Senior A hockey team (and that is very good hockey) to a national championship with the legendary Lally Lalonde behind the bench. The younger folks here may not know this but Lally was an incredible athlete; he is the only one I know who played for a Grey Cup winning team, a National lacrosse winning team and an Allan Cup winning team (Senior A Hockey supremacy).

  11. OD99 says:

Haven’t had a chance to see either game from this week but will try and see if I can watch them tonight.

I don’t know why Bobby Ryan is getting so little ice time – I know he doesn’t kill penalties but he should clearly be getting more PP time out there. If Spezza is moving around like people are suggesting I hope he does get some better wingers to play with – I would like to see how DaCosta could do on his wing or let Hoffman and or Petersson come up (I was shocked it wasn’t one or the other when they had to recall someone) as they obviously know how to score in the AHL as well. It remains to be seen if they can do it at the NHL level.

Very happy that Haley Wickenheiser is going to have the honour of carrying our nations flag into the opening ceremonies! It would have been too much if it went to Crosby…I know that there are women’s leagues but they are essentially amateurs and that is what the Olympics really are about (outside of some of the competitions). She has been a great representative for women and Canadians for a long time and deserves the attention she will get. Good job COC.

Brad Fritsch is having a good couple of days so far too @ -5 with a par 5 to play today could move him into the top 10…I guess he really does like Torrey Pines.

  12. Jules Sothauskas says:

A top four D, entering his prime, like Methot, is probably worth a top 3 shooter, just entering his prime.

  13. PaV says:

PK was a minus 2 last night. Minus 3 the game before. Ole ole ole

  14. ChokerHater says:

    Bobby, that was funny
    and sad but true

  15. Bobby Goodman says:

You are probably right Jules but the team doesn’t need more goals, right now as much as they need more defence. Many of the so-called experts believe you build a team from the back on out. It does have some merit. A team can score all the goals they want but it but if the need to score 4 or 5 a game, they’ll lose far more than they win. Goals can dry up even for the very best but…defence is far more stable.

Davey, I am a fan-atic about golf and watched all it the last two days (tape and fast forward through every bit of Sir Nick Faldo), it is the only way to go. I think Fritch must love Torrey Pines.. I know I certainly would, it has to be one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world (some vistas from my perspective are awe inspiring!

I wanted to see Brad and Graeme but all we got was the supersaturation of Caligula. I really like watching Colsaerts too but I didn’t see a single shot. Too bad really. I was really hoping Caligula would miss the cut so we could see more from others, it didn’t happen. For all the hype, Woods stunk and his swing which used to be one of the best ever, is a disaster now and it is a testiment to his enormous talent that he can win as often as he did last year with the changes he made. He used to think about a shot and then do it…now he thinks about a shot, thinks about the mechanics, thinks about the execution. It doesn’t come naturally anymore and his swing…is all totally fade centric (always rehearses an over the top move and I don’t get that at all). In 2000 he had a natural swing and now…it’s all mechanical. He is the best golfer to ever played the game but the constant rebuilding (hey…he was on a rebuild as well!!!) of his swing killed his chance to win 19 majors.

As for the Wick, I would have selected someone else and didn’t even consider her but upon reflection, she was indeed the absolute best choice.

Ryan is definitly getting less TOI and I don’t know why either; I have chalked it off as just another silly move by the DAC.

Mikey, I don’t know what Methot did that was so wrong; he was asked if the was hurt and he responded with I am ready to go. It was a mistake for the first game he sat and even more of a mistake the second time. Was it a pissing contest? You have to wonder about this Coach. Sometimes, with his comments, he sounds aloof and glib and even foolish. Many decisions he’s made this year defy logic and I don’t buy into the “he’s the coach and he knows what he’s doing” thing. If points are at a premium, why play Anderson so much and why sit out Methot?

This kid Skinner is something to behold. His hands are magic, he skating is magnificent and his desire is Galagher-Conachar-like.

  16. Mike8888 says:

I realize he’s a fellow Swede but Nic Lidstrom was was quoted as saying that in his opinion, the best defence in the NHL is Karlsson. But, what would Lidstrom know about playing d? Right OD, Pav, umm Bobby?

  17. PaV says:

Oh man. Let me start by saying we sucked yesterday. Lenher has zero confidence and should have been pulled after the third goal.

But, the much more talented Habs got their collective asses handed to them. One has to wonder if the lack of hockey IQ of Therian is coming in to play. The team lacks intensity and lacks any scoring ability. Combine that with the small size of the team and they are going nowhere. Subaan has fallen from. +14 to a +3 in just over a week. The team is becoming an embarrassment. Looking at Therian on the bench, he looks like a lost puppy dog searching for some sort of miracle.

    Ole ole ole

Back to the Sens – wake the heck up. I was at the cigar lounge last night and saw most of the team who were there for the Ottawa Sens foundation. Must have been a quick flight home for the lads.

Here is hoping for a better outcome on Tuesday vs the CBJ.

Just a question, could the problem be with the Habs that they don’t have a french speaking captain? Or could it be that they are just are small and lack talent.

    Ole ole ole

  18. Bobby Goodman says:

You would think that a fan would be upset by the loss by the Sens yesterday but one individual isn’t at all. He simply doesn’t care; he is far more focussed on the the Habs meteoric collapse and in particular, Suckubban. I don’t get it. You would think he would want to ask why the team is allowing so many goals scrored against them (6 yesterday).

No matter how you slice it, the D is the big issue on this hockey club. Indeed I am an idiot but this idiot was very fortunate to play hockey for some excellent coaches (Bob Mills and Ray Goulet in particular) who were foolish enough to mandate that the defense not allow the opposition forwards behind them. But that was amature hockey, not the NHL. It must be different in the best league in the world.

Ottawa’s defence isn’t very good at all. If the Sens offer Philips another contract to play next year it will be yet another message they don’t care about winning. To think he got to play while Methot sat and watched…it boggles the mind. Methot and Gryba were plus 1 and the rest of the defence was minus 6 (a useless stat I know but it must mean something, right?). Gryba got two assists but he didn’t have a good game; he, like Cowen is far too slow and panich when pressured. Philips is soft and brutal. Karly is soft and…not very good in his own end. I keep reading about the 30+ minutes played, but to me that isn’t a measurement of greatness but rather a statement how very slim the pickens are on the back end! Yesterday Karly was again, more a forward than a D and the problem as it has been all year is goal prevention.

I have to believe that the Coaching staff are powerless to change anything and if that is accurate at all, they should be removed. If the Team isn’t good enough to prevent so many goals scored then the problem falls on the GM and perhaps he should be removed. It is the opinion of this idiot that both are responsible and should go.

The “energy line” was awful. Neil, the “hockey player” was minus 3 and I grow tired of him skating around taking stupid penalties, nailing others into the boards, the hacking, face washes and the incessant blab/blab/blab! Poor Smitty is alone on that line.

I have never been a fan of the so called 1a and 1b thing. The problem with it is how do you balance the games they play. Can a coach truly award a 50-50 split? Someone is bound to be disgruntled especiall if he came off a shutout and was one of the palyers of the week in the NHL). Some here have said it from early last year that Anderson be traded but the GM traded one of the best goalies in the league Bishop for Conacher (I llove his speed and courage but did the team need another small forward). Anderson was great and would have secured a very good player, draft pick or both!

I really wish some fans wouldn’t be so easy to please. I wish they would be upset with the hockey club more than they are joyful the Montreal Canadians and PK are in a tailspin.

  19. Dan the Man says:

I remember coach Bob Mills when he had a pretty solid minor bantam team led by Garth Rogers, Michael Sturgeon and Peter Sturgeon. Connie Mineault was between the pipes.

Back to the Sens, I can’t stop laughing at Mendes and the rest of the Team 1200 trying to use the early game starts as a viable reason for having a terrible record in afternoon games. Perhaps we are not a very good team is the main reason our afternoon record is poor. Perhaps poor game preparation, planning and motivating is a more possible reason. I don’t know about the rest of you but I am beginning to find DAC’s never-ending weak attemts at being a comedian.

We are certainly not out of anything yet and our future will likely go down to the last few games. Pretty well the entire Eastern conference teams are mediocre at best. Pitt, TB do not impress me and Boston are not actually world beaters. If we slip into the playoffs and Murray for once makes a trade or two that actually improves the team, then I can visualize a decent playoff run, provided our goaltending is exceptional.

  20. OD99 says:

Lehner was god awful last night – really bad.

Bobby I am down for a discussion – if you agree to not put words in my mouth or just call me dumb or a lemming because my thoughts are different from yours. Is that a reasonable request?

The goals against are terrible and the defensive zone coverage is what gets out of whack but what is your suggestion to fix it then? I don’t know that Boro is the answer and Karlsson really isn’t the main reason the team gives up so many goals. He, like some other players (Spezza) seem to have people focus on the negatives and let them far outweigh all the very good things they do. Just a quick point – no NHL gives up less shots/60 minutes when shorthanded – so he is effectively the best PK D in terms of shots against in the NHL. That stat even shocked me.

Cowen is having a bad year following his hip surgery and this is really his 2nd season in the NHL so I am willing to give him some room to grow. I appreciate what you say about him being slow as it is obvious he isn’t quick – once he gets going he has some speed but his game will have to be about position and using his stick properly. That said he never should have received that contract (which I said at the time – his comparable is a guy like Alzner who signed for just over $1M) and quite frankly he should have played in the AHL all of last season.

What to do though? You trade away a young player like that after his current play and you get nothing for him so that is a waste. He needs to play less minutes and get sat every once in a while but other than that you need to just keep helping him develop.

Gryba is very under-rated in my opinion. He isn’t a star by any means but he plays physical and can move the puck out of the zone with short passes. I hope he starts to get more ice time.

Zibby is young and inconsistent but he has played with very inconsistent players too (Conacher, Michalek, Greening, Condra, etc..) and I don’t think anyone should expect him to carry a line. That said, he has a lot of potential. We can agree to disagree on his physicality and willingness to engage – I can promise you won’t convince me that he is afraid and I know I won’t convince you he isn’t. I also see him playing high and letting his wingers dig for the puck mainly because he is trying to be defensively aware.

I have been hoping the Spezza could carry a line all year but he does deserve some better wingers but the problem is there aren’t many to spare on the Senators right now as Michalek isn’t living up to what is expected and Greening is as bad offensively as he has been since joining the Senators.

Right now I think the time is right to move Ryan onto Spezza’s wing. Turris and C-Mac have proven they can do it themselves so why not let a pure shooter play with our pure passer and give them more than a game or two to get things going? If Spezza and Ryan can start to get going along with the Turris line that would be huge. It looks like we…

  21. Bobby Goodman says:

Hockey IQ for a coach? I am not so sure that is legitimate at the NHL level, but, what may be legitimate is style, personality, ability to lead/motivate, ability to build a team of 20 some odd into a team with a singlular goal. A coach will also have one rule for all, double standards of play and conduct will divide the team evrytime.

I didn’t like Therien the first time he was the Coach in Montreal and I don’t like him the second time. I was shockey Bergevin hired him (given the great care he took to build a very good management team). He was reputed to be brutally hard on the players and although that has been hidden this time around, it does surfrace from time to time.

I suspect there are some players (perhaps many more than just some) who have issues with the guy but I would never know for sure, but look what a change did in the ‘Peg.

It isn’t just Therien’s personality, its could be come of the decisions he makes. I would have Tinordi up and dressing every gamem anything is better than Douglas Murray. Beauleau is a wonderful player and should have been up earlier. Not playing Suckubban on the PK is (I suspect) has far more to do with Therien being stubborn and pride than what is best for the team. The only contol a coach has over a player is his Time on Ice!

Therien’s “hockey IQ” (the absolute most silly term in the game) isn’t in qestion here. Bergevin should look at himself when he fires the coach. I like him but he had to know going in that the team was tiny. Gionta, it passed his prime and his biggest asset was his speed, it isn’t there anymore. Galagher can get away wit his sie because he is absolutely feerless (but with his size, can he do more than be a puck hound around the net?). Moen and White are heart and soul guys but this day and age, speed is king and speed with size is even KINGER! Emelin has been awful for a lot of this year which I find very surprising and Bouillon has he heart of a lion but he too is small by NHL standards

When the team won games, they won them enirely because of their heart and soul and/or the goaltending was great. It looks like it is missing and who might be responsible for that. I know Suckubban had a closed door meeting with Bergevin recently (before the last game) and you have to wonder what that was all about).

As for the need for a French speaking Captain, the notion is ludicrous and an issue invented by the media only. There are only 4 French Canadians who play regularly (4 othere have played 6 games or less). Does anyone think that a Dane, Slovak, American, Swede etc really give a damn?

Personally, I want all the Canadian teams to succeed (BTW: do you believe the endorsement HNIC and Dum Cherry gave Lowe and McTavish???!!! I want them to succeed on the ice and by default they will succeed at the box office! But most of all, I want the team I have loved since its inception, the Ottawa Senators to be better. The Habs losing doesn’t sustain me.

  22. Bobby Goodman says:

I would agree with the Ryan move but he too is slow (and I have a theory about two slow players on the same line.

What would I do about the Defence Dave? First off, you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear so you have to accept the reality any changes made wouldn’t make them good but the could be better! I would get some of them to stop chasing. The big slow footed ones in particular. As corny as it may sound they need to play more zone and keep the game extremely simple. I also think all of them and I include Karly, to move the puck muich quicker. All too often the forwards are so far ahead because the D exits so damn slowlyt…COME OUT WITH SPEED WITH SHORT QUICK PASSES! I hate it when they all have to stop at the blueline because karly hold on to the puck far too long.

Far too often the oposition forwards get behind them…that should never happen! How often do we see our defencemen out of position? I will answer it for you…often. Karly is really a forward and when he isn’t up the ice joining the rush, he is standing around watching in his own end. He takes no pride in the way he plays inside his blueline. I don’t care what Lidstrom says, I certainly wouldn’t take Karly over others (it is my contention the team will never win anything meaningful if he is allowed to play the way he does).

The Team needs to play better defensively; its not all on the defencemen. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th line players need to take more pride in keeping their man off the score sheet; its a simple concept, pick up your man when you lose the puck.

And it is on the Coaches. They haven’t changed a damn thing all year and it looks like it is even getting worse. Methot should never sit. Philips should never be on the PP, Zzzz is allowed to float around the perimeter game after game (as a winger with Spezza he didn’t get a single puck and hovered around the hight slot)! Zzzz does absolutely diddly squat but for some reason, he gets icetime, he will start a PP or in OT it makes no sense to me at all. Neil is allowed to take many senseless penalties and the media all celebrate it. I used to respect the way he played the game, I don’t anymore. He has become a dirty hockey player when he used to be an honest hard nosed hockey player. I am beginning to think the monnicker “The Big Show” is appropriate. If he truly cared about winning a game rather than making a spectacle of himself, he wouldn’t take all the dumb penalties he does.

But you have to factor that beyond the first line, a few other front men, 2 D and 2 goaltenders, the team is terrible. The Coach and I have to assume GM promoted DaCosta and from where I am sitting, it makes no sense. The team also has a double standard and that is a Team killer.

There are a couple on this team who don’t care if they lose. Gotta change that too.

I don’t hate anyone, but (Ihave said it before) I do hate the way some play, how a Coach manages a game and the moves made by a GM. The

  23. OD99 says:

I agree on the team defence – I have been saying it for a couple of years now actually. In our end it becomes a side show far too often.

So no Philips on the PP. I can live with that. I like the big line going first with Turis on the point along with Karlsson and Spezza but then the second line would have Ceci and? If he is playing Wiercioch but if not then I guess Methot? Or keep Karlsson out for the whole thing.

We each strongly disagree with each other on Karlsson so I won’t expect to change your mind but I see a completely different player than you do out there defensively. He does concede some corners some time but other than that his defensive play is miles ahead of where it was even a couple months ago let alone a couple of years ago.

I am happy DaCosta was sent back – no use in calling him up to play with Neil and Condra and I hope that Petersson or Hoffman get a chance to come up and give some speed and skill on the wing for Spezza.

It really is a huge game against Columbus (they all are right now) and the boys need to get on a roll here.

I am getting excited for the Olympics – I love them and not just the hockey…it is a bit of a spectacle now but some of the lesser known athletes and sports have a chance to shine on a global scale.

Fritsch held his own when many were falling yesterday and DeLeat continues to look like he is the real deal and will bust through soon. Too bad Fritsch couldn’t take advantage of few holes yesterday or he could have been right there and received a real nice pay day. As usual the tv coverage was focused on the US players so we only got to see the odd putt or chip from our Canucks but I guess it is to be expected.
