Must win time

So, this is it. The start of the road to glory or the road to nowhere.
The Senators head into Tuesday night’s game against the New York Rangers trailing for the last wildcard spot by seven points. The club is all but done. Very little hope.
They could win and draw within five points. There are a lot of teams in front of them.
This club has only been in a playoff spot one day since Nov. 11th and I’m not sure the Senators even spent 24 hours there.
The question will arise: Should they have sold at the deadline?
No. They were close at the time. They expected to win games in Edmonton and Calgary. That they lost both has made it difficult for themto recover.
It really is going to take one incredible run. It starts against the Rangers.
They need a win here. Then they need a win against Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday.
The Lightning play Wednesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Senators will be sitting and waiting for them.
There is a long road ahead. Paul MacLean keeps saying “we’ll like where we are after 82 games.”
Okay. Well, the road to accomplishing that goal has to start at Game 68 and keep going.

I have a different opinion Bruce; I don’t think this game tonight is must win at all. We all know the Sens aren’t going to the post season so why not see what some kids can really do. P/Dubya, Gyrba, Cowen and Ceci should all be in the lineup. I would have Hoffman at center, he actually wants the puck and if Zzz wants to plant his ass in the slot and wait for a pass, so be it. If the Hoff is not in the middle, then put him on the left side with Spezza and Hemsky. Mike can read plays and make them and…he can get his shot off in a hurry. At the very least the game would be more interesting.

  2. Bobby Goodman says:

Can we safely say the post season dreams are over? I am sure the extras revenue would hve been appreciated but short lived. Maybe now people will look at the root cause of the problem. From my persepective, the guy who made this mess is responsible. He and his “well oiled machine” (per this AJ guy) are the architects but it goes beyond the players, I truly believe the culture has to change. Donny was right on the money when he called out Karlsson for his lack of effort and we saw it again tonight. He is now minus 18 and I have been tracking his steady decline for many months; there are only 5 defencemen in the entire league with worse plus/minus. Coincidence, I think not.

Philips is here for two more years; if he is awful now, will he be better next year and the year after that. Cowen and Gryba should not be paired together (it isn’t fair to Gryba) and P/Dubya should be in the lineup over TBR and Cowen. The defence is just awful and Methot is the only real NHLer.

We got to see Hoffman put on a show; he should get more icetime but that was saved for Zzzz. The Hoff is magic with the puck, is an unbeliebable passer, has a rocket and gets involved! Imagine what he could do with a real centerman?

The DAC and DAACs are powerless to effect any change. They can’t do anything to prevent the onslaught. They put the wrong people together and they wont penalize anyone for lack of effort (I think Kevin is right and that decision is out of the Coaches hands).

The Team is brutal and the Organization is crumbling as we fans watch and desperately try to find something to celebrate. It is a real shame.

  4. Visitor - Pierre D. says:

There are no must wins in Senator land Bruce.
Ironclad no-trade clauses, soft players, and a very, very timid general manager that would rather extend a terrible bottom-pairing defenceman than trade him, that would rather keep a deteriorating Michalek than get a prospect for him and the DAC keeps putting Chris Neil out as an extra attacker, and he has no skill.

No other team in the league’s history gave up a 4-1 lead in the final three minutes, but we did. In a must-win game we crapped the bed 8-4. And now Clarke MacArthur says they need to wake up. No kidding Clarke, but what are you going to do about it? Clarke, you’d be a third liner in Toronto, you were a passenger in Atlanta and even a crap team like Buffalo didn’t want you, and now you’re speaking up? Please.

This is a team of losers. The GM doesn’t care if the team loses, he’ll just sign a new ironclad contract to anyone that asks for it. The owner doesn’t care if the team loses, he’s just going to roll over a pile of dollars and go back to sleep. The coach? Lost and out of answers. He plays Smith-Greening-Neil more than he plays talented players like Turris, Spezza and others. Bobby Ryan plays third line minutes. Erik Karlsson tries to do it all but he can’t. Mike Hoffman is looking good but the DAC won’t play him 20 minutes a night, even though he’s earned it.

This is an absolutely brutal team but the BIG question?
Has the Ottawa Sun noticed? On a day they got pasted 8-4 there wasn’t a word of it on the front page. It looks like Tim Baines is afraid to ask questions and that trickles down to the rest of the group that refuse to ask questions of the coach or general manager.
Guess what Bruce, we’re going to keep having a bad team until the team is held accountable and there are only two groups that can do that. One is management (Murray won’t he’s too scared!) and the media (who don’t want to lose their players and management) so mediocrity it is!

But hey, Curtis Lazar is going to be a power forward right? And Ceci is Drew Doughty and Karlsson is Bobby Orr and Cowen is Chara and…

  5. Bobby Goodman says:

Earlier this year, Methot said the same 1 or 2 players don’t buy in or show up every game. 3 months later, Clark MacArthur says the team has to have pride, needs to empty the tank in agame, have more pride. Who were they referrig to? Could Methot and MacArthur be referring to themselves; no. What about the Turris line, again; no. The Smittly line, no. What about P/Dubya, Cowen, Gryba, Ceci, The Big Rig…no, they all make the effort. So, Condra, Karly and the Spezza line are the only ones left (its hard to do because Spezza’s had 10 wingers but I did my best to narrow it down). Condra and Milan work hard, so their dismissed. That leaves Spezza, Karly and Zzzz. If the DAC says “we need to show up/be prepared, we turn the puck over too much, need to play 60 minutes” and Clark says we need to have pride, leave it on the ice, make an effort in our own end, increase the compete level, who are they be referring to?

Forget about personal favourties, what goes through the minds of those who bleed for the team when they see Zzzz killing penalties, failing in OT, getting PP time (when there are others with 20 goals or more sitting) and on the ice with 6 seconds left with the goalie pulled when the team is behind by 3 goals? How do the players on the bench feel when Karly quits on a play, wont retrieve a puck in the corner, is on the ice for 2 and half minutes in a shift, disappears in tough games, gives the puck away/turn it over? What do the players think when they see the same thing all year and the Coach do nothing about it! If the team was winning games…he could turn a blind eye to it all, but the team’s record it abysmal. Don’t you think the players are are frustrated by the “double standard”.

Donny was couragous enough to let his opinions be known on the radio last week; as a reminder, he said he “hated the way Karly plays in his own end, he doesn’t even try and that he is only concerned with setting personal records”. Can that be said of anyone else on this hockey club?

I have only seen 2 players on this team who don’t leave it on the ice, don’t make an effort and don’t have pride. My suspicion is the Team isn’t really a team, all pulling together. How could they? Donny said what many people in the media already know. If I was a player and saw what was going on, I would have some major issues too! Philips gets a regular shift, PP and PK duties and signs a 2 year extension. Conacher gets put out to the curb like garbage. The Hoff tears up the AHL (for years) and when he finally gets a real opportunity, many are shocked how good he is! Some aren’t at all. Zzz is criticized for his attitude in October, sleep walking in the pre-season. Can anyone remember another 20 year old guilty of not making an effort in a NHL pre-season? He was promoted and given every opportunity. And then there is Karly!

It has to be frustrating to see the nonsense all year and know your GM is behind it all.

  6. Dan the Man says:

Bobby, good letter to the Ottawa Sun today on Alfie and his so-called leadership abilities. I am still befuddled how a lot of people out there still worship the ground he walks on. I guess these are the same people who idolize the likes of father Joe and honestly think he should have been let off for stealing or should I say robbing decent and likely honest church goers of significant dollars. If I embezzled a few hundred thousand from CHEO for example, I would never see a day light again and these same Father Joe sympathizers would be calling for my head. It’s a funny world we live in but what is even funnier is that predicting NHL games is next to impossible. On that note, Sens will definitely win tonight.

  7. Bobby Goodman says:

Pierre, mon ami…..MacArthur has earned to right to speak candidly! I don’t care if he didn’t doe well in Buffalo and Toronto. Did he play for Raulston; I know who his coach was in Toronto (BTW: do you think the Leafs would rather have Clark in their lineup than Clark? I do). I don’t see a shift were he doesn’t work hard and he has done it all year. The Turris line is not nearly the same when he is out of the lineup. He has earned the right to seak up.

Pierre, “what he will do about it” is the same thing he has been doing all year…”leaving it all on the ice”! Forget about structure and systems (like Clark says, they’re the same for every team), players need to have pride and be willing to put their name it. Teams are made as a result of players sharing in a common goal/purpose. Wins are the result of hard work and willingness to compete every night every shift. Average teams have won cups because they had it and by the same token, great teams have lost because the didn’t.

I wish others would speak up and I wish more was said!

  8. OD99 says:

Don, did you actually say that about Karlsson?

I agree 100% and have said many times (not enough for some – that would be: daily) that Karlsson’s lack of effort on occasion is disgusting although I do believe he wants to win and be part of a winning team. I also don’t think he is simply looking to pad his stats. He could do a lot more rushing and risk taking if that was the case. He needs to be more consistent in the defensive zone and I would like to see him use his speed all the time to get back (and maybe look over his shoulder to actually pick up a guy) but he makes a lot of nice defensive plays each game and while some may scoff his physical play is far ahead of what it was even a year ago.

As for Zzzz…nah, I won’t bother. I disagree on his effort and his potential – should be enough.

This team is in a tail spin, no doubt and the GVA’s are completely unacceptable and should have been addressed two years ago. The circus that is our defensive zone has to stop and I hope that getting some different D in different spots can help on that side.

With Hemsky I like the offence now – Spezza is playing like he was pre injury and the Turris line, while in a bit of a slump, typically plays a smart and hard game. The Zibanejad line is coming on and Hoffman looks like he could be a very solid player at this level now. He is setting the bar quite high for himself next season.

Would really like to see some of the youngsters get some games this year with the NHL club. Puempel has shocked me by being such a consistent scorer at the AHL level. He is tied for the league lead by rookies with 24 goals (his 13 assists are another matter but it is a lot harder to score than get an assist) so I would like to see him get his feet wet and then of course I still want to see Stone get some time.

Lastly, I would love to see Claessen up for a couple of games before the AHL play-offs begin. Every time I have watched a Bingo game he has looked good – is it possible there is a diamond in the rough?

Murray like many has had his victories and his defeats but the pipeline is looking better than ever and although this season has been an abject failure there is still some very good players and I don’t think many adjustments are required.

Lehner is to me the most shocking and upsetting story line…I was all for trading Anderson last year and keeping Bishop & Lehner but the kid is showing some really disturbing trends. Once it starts to go sideways he just can’t stop the onslaught and his bad angle and rebound goals are killers.

In a way I hope Anderson stays sidelined for a bit so Lehner can try to work his way out of this terrible slump…our goalie of the future is looking like a lost soul right now.

  9. Mike8888 says:

The players obviously aren’t playing for MacLean. If I was Murray, I would let MacLean finish the season and replace him with Luke Richardson. Richardson seems to be able to get the most out of his players.

  10. Bobby Goodman says:

What is amazing to me Dan is all the ‘oholics there are out there now and it is often used to rationalize bad behaviour. I, for instance, am a self proclaimed dumbass-oholic…and recently an annoying blog-oholic. I am seeking professional help…as we sp….as we type…..on this blog. I know others who are: lazy-oholics, curse-oholics, TV-oholics, game-oholics, golf-oholics, news-oholics, cloths/shoes-ohlics and the list is endless. I even know a Suckubban-oholic! I don’t think that the game-aholic would get much sympathy if he/she went out and stole 140k worth of games and the latest decices. Do you?

As for Annika, it astounding how he is revered. I have family members (mostly women) who adore him. If you asked them to detail why, they can only give you what they have read, “he is a fantastic leader on the ice, in the locker room and in the community”. What nonsense. 11 times he couldn’t lead the team past the 1st round in the playoffs! What kills me the most though is his reputation in the community…he hid from the public!!!! He was uncomfortable around people. He spent summers in Sweden. He only showed to events and represented causes he was told to! No one kows nor do they care to know what cause the other players are told to represent! Isn’t it amazing that gaudy rich athletes can be celebrated because they show up to glad hand and get their pictures taken (primarily to promote a cause but really a corporation). They do it once in a blue moon and people think their Saints!? Regular civilians do it ever day, and no one gives a damn. To hell with the real heroes, lets celebrate one who was invented…indeed everything but his hockey skills was an invention.

  11. Bobby Goodman says:

Zzzz saw almost 19 minutes of ice time; he was on the PP, the PK and on the ice with the goalie pulled…why? Is it because he wins one on one battles? Is it because he is a nifty centerman (neither one of his wingers Hoff/Condra had a single shot)? It’s all so very obvious and it makes me ill. He had the audacity to say he and Hoffman were fast players…seriously? Oh yes, Conacher now has 25 points and is plus 7 (2g and 2a since being traded), Zzz has 27 points and is minus 14). Zzzz scored his 5th goal in 39 games with an extra man and his 6th in 40 with 6 seconds left and the goalie pulled for an extra man. He will be successful DAMNIT!

Karlsson had 2 great shots in the game, outside of that, he was awful. He didn’t lead rushes, his passess often missed the mark and he was again tatally useles in his own end, shamelessly so. He was on the ice for 3 of the 5 goals scored against and he was minus 2 for the evening leaving him minus 20 for the year! But hey, lets make him a Star!

He is leading the league in goals scored and total points for a defenceman though, winning hockey games be damned. By the end of the year, if he keeps up his pace, he may very well may lead the league in goals and points for a D, continue leading in Gva (he had 2 more last night), lead all D with the worst plus/minus rating (he is edging ever closer after every game), be on the ice for most goals scored against and lead his team with the worst plus/minus (even worse than Spezza…can you imagine?)!

Karly was minus 2 (Methot must still be struggling, he was minus 1), The Big Rig was minus 1, yet, Cowen, Gryba and Ceci were plus 1, 2, 1 respectively. Go figure?

5 more goals were scored against the Senators last night; they now have allowed 234. They very well may surpass the NYI in that category and fished the League’s worst.

  12. Dan the Man says:

I know squat about NHL hockey!!

  13. ChokerHater says:

I heard the fat lady sing last night
    he he
    told you so, they stink
When a castoff from the Toronto Maple Leafs is your best player all year, what does that tell you.
Toronto is going to barely make the playoffs and your best all year is someone they didn’t need!
Karlsson has proven the league made a huge mistake two years ago, he can’t play in his own end, or won’t. The captain is a joke, and the man who should be captain is in another town leading a different team. If they had treated him the way they promised, this would be a different team.
Time to fire the guy who built this team and ruined a good franchise. I doubt that will happen so get ready for more years of the same. However, I see coaches being fired in the near future as a scapegoat to try to keep disgruntaled season ticket holders. What a sham

  14. OD99 says:

That was one amazing goal Hemsky scored and I was right behind the goalie, second level, to appreciate it…sick.

What a sloppy game on both sides though – so many penalties and so many breakdowns.

Lehner is a nightmare right now too and while the D is not helping him out much he needs to make a friggin save at some point doesn’t he?

GVA are the same story – far too many.

Smith took a penalty out of sheer frustration…I was yelling from the stands to just go back to the bench but he was determined to take one and of course Callahan scores on it.

Hoffman is showing he belongs and I love they finally gave him a good look. I thought he showed enough last season too but then his injuries caught up…any chance things are different this season if he was up the whole time?

  15. Bobby Goodman says:

Choke, MacArthur is playing fantastic hockey!!! What part of his game don’t you like? You make it sound like he’s a bum! And why are you celebrating a team that is struggling? Especially a Canadian team?

I think the Leaf’s could use him and his 48 points (good enough to make the third higest scorer on the Leafs). Do you think Clark was a better addition? Damn I ‘m glad he took less money to sign with the Maple Leafs!!!! Whew dodged that bullet. MacArthur, Turris and Ryan are playing fantastic hockey; all have 48 points (only 10 points behind Spezza’s 58 points)! MacArthur’s departure from the Leafs isn’t a testimony how awful he is, but it is a testiment to how bad the Maple Leaf management are (almost as bad as the Sen’s)!

I feel your frustration Dave! I am frustrated and confused all the hell. Why doesn’t Wierchoch dress? Wasn’t Philips just dandy…again…and we will see him for 2 more years (home town discount indeed). Zzzz get 18 minutes of icetime and he does diddly squat. He is now getting PK time? He is on the PP (always parked in the slot waiting for a pass (the miserable slot). Why did the Hoff sit…he can actually carry the puck and he has an amazing shot that doesn’t need a year to execute! Zzz can’t catch a pass, make a play nore does he ever win a one on one battle. I don’t get it.

I was listening again to “the Drive”…primarily because I like what Shawn Simpson has to say…most of the time. But I had to nuke it because I found it to be very frustrating! He never brings up Karlsson…ever. He/they wont talk about his play in his own end. Simmer is not a Spezza fan…and he lets it be known. I am confused why a guy with 58 points in 64 games can be the brunt of so much criticism.

I read a piece abou Karlsson from a writer recently:

….with all due deference to Karlsson’s popularity, I can’t imagine Canadian hockey fans are correct here (putting him in the top 5). Karlsson is just too weak in his own end. The NHL hasn’t seen defensive play like Karlsson’s game since Oilers fans were referring to a 19-year-old rookie as Paul “Cough-up.”To get a better sense of Karlsson’s defensive play, I reviewed video of goals against at even strength. Very often, Karlsson would get stripped of the puck while rushing it and the other team would quickly score. Or he’d make an errant pass in his own-zone. Or he’d get beaten off the rush. Of he’d fail to cover his man in the slot. Of course, all defencemen make such mistakes. Karlsson just makes them at an unusually high rate.

This was written about Karlsson in his Norris Trophy winning year. He doesn’t CARE about Defence at all this year! Based on his attitude, effort/committement level, he could finish the year with the team’s worst plus/minus. Why is this tolerated?

Simmer did bring up something intersting; how can Murray convince some important cogs to stay. They see what is going on and I am sure know what is ahead!

  16. KevinF says:

Again the McArthur, Clarkson comparison is only valid in terms of one left the Leafs and one joined as free agents, MacArthur is a LW Clarkson RW. Leafs have Lupul and JVR at LW , MacA had lost confidence of the coach and was at best 3rd on the depth chart, they didn’t want him back. Clarkson was highly sought out FA not because of his scoring but because of his “intangibles” so far it has been a unmitigated disaster , can only hope that something good can come of it.
As I said at the time of the Macs signing he will disappear for long stretches, which he has from the scoresheet, he’s a career 20 goal scorer. Lucky for him the Sens, despite the full pipeline, don’t have any depth on the wing and he is a 3rd line winger getting 1st line minutes and pp time , he’s on pace to be a 26 goal scorer if he played 82 games. He is in my opinion a top 6 only on a bad team. Sure likes the cameras though, must be driving the Big Show crazy that he can’t get in there and talk about himself and what a great team player he is.
Hemskys goal was a beauty for sure, makes you wonder why the Oilers have spent most of the last 5 years trying to dump him, with the most curious Kovalev contract (10 mil 2 years)
tacked on the end there. Maybe if Geno would have been willing to take on Ales last summer, he could have been had for very little, the Sens would be in the thick of this nutty race that my Leafs are trying to blow. Enjoy your impressive cap space!

  17. Bobby Goodman says:

Comparisons will continue and the question whether they are fair or not will as well. Maybe they are’t fair but they can be fun in a discussion. There are so many factors that can effect a players performance. MacArthur never quits, has good hands, is a great skater and he is playing with 2 guys others who are skilled. Ryan however is not the skater the other two are (he’s slow). Has every played with 3 skilled players before, I suspect he neer did. For whatever reason, MacArthur fell out of favor in Toronto but to not want him back is a mystery. They preferred Kulemin.

The 1st, 2nd, 3rd line thing is another subject for debate. I don’t even like the term but we need a point of reference. Depending on the team, a skater can be a 1, 2 or 3…and depending on the player/team, he could be a 3rd or 4th line player. For some players they wouldn’t be on a team in the NHL in another city!

Hemsky is blessed with world-class talent but he isn’t blessed with a world-class heart. He can drive you crazy with his vanishing act. He’s done it his entire career. in the last 5 years he had 7, 14, 10, 9 and 9 goals in Edmonton and 2 more with the Sens. For his career his is minus 45 (a uselss statistic I know). He was minus 13 with the Oil this year and he is minus 1 with Ottawa. Will the Senators sign him? Should they sign him? I would suggest Murray will make him an offer…but do they want another very skilled hockey player who can’t be counted on every night? Would they sign him and trade Spezza who will be making 4m next year? Anything is possible in this town I guess!

It will be interesting to see what the GM does this summer; he has some challenges for sure. They include”

    - Greening RFA
    - Hoffman RFA
    - Kassian UFA
    - Michalek UFA
    - Gryba RFA, and
    - Lehner RFA

In 2015 he will have some other issues he will have to deal with. The GM can spin some believable stories about rebuilds and Stanley Cups the media and fans all buy into but can he convince some key players?

My suspicion is Spezza will be gone; that will make a lot of people very happy but will indeed introduce some major challenges (who will then take his place as the fall guy, he is afterall a plus 58 in his career, who will replace his offence, who do the media and fans then blame the lack of leadership on).

If I was the GM, I would look at trading any player, Spezza included. I would most certainly put Karly out there and listen to offers. I would start building a team with hockey players who want to be here, have a passion for the game, want to win. I would look at speed, courage and heart first! And I wouldn’t want players with inflated egos, who put themselves above the team (I suspect the Organization shares reponsibility for that). I would look at Canadian content and in particular, kids from Major Junior Hockey in Canada including some French Canadian kids – Murray obviously doen’t want them here).

  18. Mike8888 says:

    Bobby,
Greening isn’t an RFA. His new no-trade contract kicks in next season. I’m starting to agree with you re Murray. Giving up on Conacher and losing him for nothing on waivers was ludicrous. I realize hind sight is always 20-20 but obviously not keeping Bishop was also a huge mistake.

  19. KevinF says:

1 2 3 line designations are a indication of who a player plays with and against and in what situations, pp time etc. I liked Mac as a leaf, but I don’t believe he is a top winger on a good team, he can be a effective support player but his record over close to 500 gp indicate 20 goals is his ceiling, 25 if he gets top line ice time. Maybe Sens fans are right and after a half dozen years all he needed was this opportunity. I don’t think so, he was top six on bad non playoff teams in TO and was found expendable as the team built some depth. He was also found expendable in Buffalo and then Atlanta. Lightning in a bottle maybe but the established track record doesn’t indicate stardom. Personally I hope Mac is on the Sens top line for a long time and I really hope Hemsky signs long term and joins him in the top six for many years. Frankly that duo doesn’t strike a lot of fear in me over the long haul.
Ryan’s a good scorer but what has happened with him tailing off so dramatically? The Sens are in tough with him in my opinion, gotta think he is going to ask for at least 6 mil over a long term. I think they have to extend him this summer or try to wheel him before next season. As the Vanek situation showed going to the deadline with a UFA to be is a dangerous situation.

  20. Bobby Goodman says:

You are probably right Mikey. I really am sincerely sick with what is going on in Ottawa. Everything is awful (and it has nothign to do with hate or anger). The GM’s record stinks; out in the first round twice; out in the second round once and missing the playoffs 3 times. The colour guys are amateur hour and Potvin in particular is a just awful. The local media are afraid to be honest and call it as it is. But you are right, it starts with the architect(s) Murray.

Murray hired all the coaches and all of them have been terrible (44 more shots today and another loss). P/Dubya doesn’t get an opportunity and the team has lost 6 straight…why? The guy the DAC likes in the middle was on the ice for over 14 minutes but could even set him linemates up for a single shot. Do you know he touched the puck once in the first period (by my count and it was in his own end, it was on his stick for 2 seconds). He wond 33% of the draws. He was on the PK, PP and on with the extras attacker but only had 2 shots himself! Tell me Mikey, have you seen him win a single battle?

I have said my fill and it has made many think I am a nut when in reality, I just care (…I could be a little bit nuts :-)

Isn’t it a shame that with 13 games left many fans have already dialed out? My son who is a die hard fan (he has a Zzzz sweater!!!!!!!) tapes it now and FF through it quickly through the bad play and horrendous coverage. I want to be entertained Mikey and this team is not entertaing. Oh well, I will just have to watching more golf and baseball is starting soon and then…we will be on the links!

Anytime you would like to meet for a fast beer, let me know.

  21. Bobby Goodman says:

Wouldn’t it have been interesting to know what the GM’s plan was for the first rebuild? Did we see anything that might described as a “rebuilding” process? My limited understanding of re-building is to break down first, did we see that at all? What about winning the Stanley Cup in 2016? What has Murray done in his 6 years here as GM makes anyone confident it is doable? Of course it isn’t doable but it is outrageously silly. Who challenges him; I will answer that one, no one!

Year after year he gets the endorsement from the media and the fan base who likes what they see on ice. It is interesting that at the start of the year I think it was only myself and Choke who had the Sens out of the Playoff picture. Bruce had them 5th, Pav had them 3rd, I had them 10th or worse. What we see on the ice today shouldn’t surprise those who were paying attention.

GMs, Coaches and Players aren’t great (by default), because they pull on a Sens sweater! Prospects aren’t great because they were signed/drafted by the Sens. I was acused of quitting on players but that wasn’t the case at all (I never tasted haggis and I know I wouldn’t like it). When ever I saw Çowen I saw a mountain of a man who couldn’t skate well enough and panicked with the puck. I never saw Zzzz’s speed, stickhandling, playmaking, heart (heart.passion isn’t something that is developed!). DaCosta is nifty but like the others: Butler, Pageau, Rund’sad et, not NHL material.

Some still believe the team is ripe with great prospects. How many actually believe the team will be in position to challenge for the prize in 2016, 2017……?

We saw a geat talent score his 19th goal yesterday. We also saw the same great talent get beat 3 times by charging wingers. How may times do we see him deliver a bad pass; all to often I would offer. Like the game before, the former Norris trophy winner had a great shot but nothing else. As much as the DAC will try, he can’t make Zzzz a hockey player. Why doesn’t someone ask why he is now killing penalties when he never won a one-on-one battle in his hockey playing career. On one play it looked like he was going to beat a defenceman to the puck (and expose his body to a hit) in the other team end but he took a longer route and slowed down just enough to get beat and allowed the Dallas Star to retreive it. It’s plays like these we see too often from 2 players that make me ill (and they have to make some players on the team just as sick).

The GM says he wants a Cup in 2016, does anyone think signing The Big Rig is going to help? Who thinks Ryan will stay (I am sure he wont). The way things are going here in Ottawa, who would want to stay? Why can’t this franchise attract the star FAs?

The Owner can be a fool, his comments/antics have been a source of ridicule and embarrassment (what do the players themselves think?). From the announcers to GM, the many Coaches to the product, it has been amateur hour. Speak up everybody!!!

  22. Dan the Man says:

I think it is fair to say that Bobby was pretty well spot on all year with respect to his comments on the Sens. Defence sucks and the rest is mediocre at best. One has to really wonder if Gm Murray truly knows what he is doing. Just take a look at all his trades, moves, signings and failures. Does MacLean really know what he is doing? Just go back and revisit all the dumb things he says, the decisions he has made on who to play and why do players like no hands Neil, Philipps and his goal scoring prowness etc… see action on the power play and key moments late in a game. I am afraid to say that we are going to see many more years of mediocrity unless there are major changes starting with the Gm and down.

  23. Visitor - Pierre D. says:

Bobby, Mac would not have 48 points on the Leafs he’d have 15-20 because he wouldn’t be getting prime ice like he does in Ottawa. Is he playing well for us, absolutely. I cede that to you Bobby, maybe I had some extraneous bias against him because he’s played for the Leafs, a team that I normally enjoy watching but is taking a perplexing turn for the worst; they must be the worst team to start a game in the world, which is a shame because that foretold Toronto-Montreal playoff series would have been a dandy.

Anyway, back to the local club, I can’t understand how bad they are in their own end.
The GM says he is fine with the defence but he certainly can’t be as Nichushkin (spelling?) breezed by Karlsson as if he were a rec league player. Karlsson says he is 100% but if so, why does he have such trouble pivoting to catch his man? Word through the grapevine is that Bobby Ryan is suffering from a leg injury, if so then MacLean should just let him recover and have the surgery he’s rumoured to need. Shawn Simpson, whom I can’t stand listening to as he’s too fond of airing is proclivities on air and just says stuff to stir the pot.
The other day he said “The future is extremely bright in Ottawa, no need to panic or change anything!” Oddly enough, TSNWally (Brent Wallace) came in and gave a sober look and basically said the complete opposite, that change was needed and there was a feeling of near hopelessness among the team.

Will there be change in the off-season? I sure hope so, but with the local team being handcuffed financially and the general manager saying he very much likes the defence, don’t hold your breath!

  24. Bobby Goodman says:

Pierre, you ahave a point but I have always looked at a players potential. If I see that they can skate, are unafraid and are willing to compete, I’m going to like them. If they have some skill and can shoot, I will like them even more. It is the Coaches job to put players together with others who compliment eachother (not like it is here in Ottawa, to make an individual successful). Certainly MacArthur wouldn’t have got the minutes in Toronto, but was that because of him or the dumbass Coach? He didn’t like Grabo either. The Leafs are crapping themselves and it is hard to watch. Indeed the goaltending has been suspect but did their DAC help the situation? It is interesting to me how he is willing to take all the responsibility for his brilliant coaching when the team wins but not an ounce when they lose. Does he like Gardiner now? There are many who always did. A Team shares responsibility…

I like a player who can score 20 goals or more. They are few and far between this day and age. If they can score 20 goals and be responsible, hell, I like them even more. It is interesting to note that Fisher and Vermette will/have socred 20 goals…again.

You are right about Simpson. I don’t see consistency from him and he contradicts himself. One day he will have courage and say something about the GM and then the next day, he will celebrate him. He is a motor mouth and should be a DJ in Florida (“Simmer the Love Sponge”). When he feels bold enough, he will throw something out there when he doesn’t its all bouquets!

Pierre mon ami, I suspect the Sens are as bad as they are in their own end because they chase the opposition until they are out of position and good forwards take full advantage! If they were well coached (they aren’t), it wouldn’t happen so much (no matter how bad a player may be). Just recently they DAACs changed responsibility (Forwards and Defencemen). Why do you think that may be? If a defenceman is not the swiftest of skaters, he needs to be that more judicious with his space (because he can’t recover quickly when out of position). If a D is slow AND he hasn’t got the best hands, it is a dubble whammy? P/Dubya isn’t the best there is but he is a hell of a lot better than Cowen the 12 million dollar man with the no trade contract. He and The Big Rig are the future!

I see Stone is playing tonight. I love his heart, passion and inteligence but he is far too slow for the NHL. How long will Zzzz in the middle experiment continue? Why does the DAC “like him in the middle”. Why not ask? Why not even try Hoffman at centre? Perhaps then he could actually set up others for a shot. Certainly the Shooter can’t! Lets count how many times Zzzz actually touches the puck, battles/draws he wins, plays he makes…

Things wont change Pierre. The GM is here for 2 more years when he will win the Stanley Cup and the Organization is sadly lacking. There is no class, no plan, no direction and soon, no Spezza.

  25. PaV says:

Wow, I had no idea that the NHL hired so many arm chair GMs! Me included!

The team is a disappointment, but I am not going to rant, or make fun, or make up childish nicknames.

The team is done. They were done right after we got our collective asses handed to us by DET right after the Olympic break.

But as a fan (like Mike and OD), we will cheer our team on to the very end. That is what real fans do.

Cue the rants and very poorly written English. he he
    I
    should write
    in broken
    words and sentances
    he he

  26. Bobby Goodman says:

What do you want to be said in this blog Pav. If you were a fan, not simply infatuated, you would offer some thoughts as to what needs to change for them to be better (but because you don’t have any idea what needs to happen, you simply can’t).

In case you haven’t noticed, Mikey has introduced some ideas as to what needs to be changed so that we “fans” could have something legitimate to celelbrate. Is he now a “hater”? Wouldn’t you like the Team to be better Pav? If so, what would you do and if not, why not? Have you ever discussed a bad movie…afterall, your not a Producer/Director? What about Politics…I suspect you’re not a Mayor, MPP, Premier, PM or President? Do you talk about the PGA, you’re not a professional? Are we to assume you want this Blog reserved only for people like you? I see you have been silent…I guess the Habs must be winning hockey games.

I don’t care if you write in fractured sentences, broken English and throw out names (I have been called many and don’t care) but damnit son, say something! It will hurt at first to migrate away from “Suckubban and the Habions”…but it will get easier, I promise. Can you not comment on what is plaguing the Senators, Pav? Are we to assume, by your silence, nothing can be done or, you are satisfied? Donny said his piece on the radio a week ago last Saturday, is he now a GM? The Suckubban led Habions now have 85 points to Ottawa’s 69 and you have nothing to offer on either team….85 points is pretty good for a team: afraid, slow, small, talentless and iligitimate, don’t you think? If everyone was like you, we wouldn’t have any traffic here at all! Have an opinion (broken or fractured) on something other than those who turly care about the Sens or at team that is iligitimately 16 points ahead of them.

I’ll even introduce some subjects Pav:

    - Should Murray continue as the GM (if so, why and if not, why not)
    - Should the coaches stay with the team
    - Would you change the lineup in any way (who and where)
    - Where will this team be by the end of next year…is a Cup in sight for 2016?
    - Should Zzzz be a centerman (again explain your reason either way)
    - Will Karly finish the year leading the team in Scoring, Gva and Plus/MInus, TGA

What this “old idiot” has learned over the years is that blind loyalty is’t a good thing. In the case of the Senators, it is an endorsement of imcompetence and failure. Asking questions that make you think, is always a good thing. And, curiousity can make things clear, we can learn more things can be made fresh/new. Aren’t you curious at all Pav; don’t you have any questions? I certainly do!

I would like to know why P/Dubya sits and why the DAC, GM can’t/wont give us an answer. Certainly all the goals against recently is reason enough for a change…isn’t it?
Why Zzz at the center position, on the PK, on the PP, on the ice with the goalie pulled for an extra attacker.

  27. OD99 says:

Well the Senators still give up way too many shots and goals but they are scoring a lot themselves and finally scored one more than the competition.

Didn’t see the game yet but saw some highlights and sounds like Stone acquitted himself well (nice little pass to Turris – I think that is a hugely underrated portion of Stone’s game, he is a pretty good play maker) while Spezza and Karlsson kept up their production as well.

Karlsson finished +3 so I guess he was outstanding defensively?

When is the last time Lehner gave up less than 3 goals? I know he stopped all the shoot-out attempts but another 2 goal lead blown?

Not that it matters except to minimize the damage in the Ryan trade but hopefully the boys pull it out tonight against the Panthers and can get on even a small roll to finish out the season.

  28. Bobby Goodman says:

Why Zzzz at the center position, on the PP, PK and why the hell have him on the ice in OT?

Last night the kid the DAC likes in the middle didn’t have a single point, won only 20% of his draws and didn’t set up his wingers for a single shot (they had some shots but not because of him). But he continues to be in the middle. Why? Anyone? Hoffman didn’t get a second of playing time in OT but Zzzz did. Wouldn’t Hoffman’s speed, shot, skill and willingnes to compete for the puck have been put to good use 4 on 4? Even Potsie had to comment on Zzzzz’s lazy backcheck that led a goal scored agaisnt; he failed to mention that just before that, he (again) lost a one-on-one battle for the puck! Does he ever win a one-on-one battle? He was was minus one of course as were his wingers Condra and Hoffman who do all the work but The Shooter gets to kill penalties, see PP time and the team is confident he will help them win in OT. Go figure. And, why doesn’t Karly get him the puck when he is wide open on the PP?

Spezza “the lightning rod for criticism” per Potsie, won 70 percent of his draws (led the team). He had 6 shots on net! He scored a goal and he won the game in the shoot out!

If Condra possessed some offensive flair could read plays and the flow, he would have had a easy goal set up by Hoffman’s hard work winning a battle to get the puck and sending it in front of the net where Condra should have been. Zzzz was where he usually is watching from well behind, safely on the outside. What is going on here? Is it safe to have a kid who lost 80% of his draws on the ice killing a penalty and playing 4 on 4 in OT? At this point in the season (PO out of the question) why not see what others can really do…certainly we are more than aware of what Zzzz is capable of).

Potsie had no compunction telling the viewers Spezza’s -22 he negected to tell them he was plus 59 over his career or that he was really minus 21.But he was quick to do the math for Karlsson for his minus 18 (which is infinitely better). He and Browner needed a towel as they climaxed over Karlsson, not once did they draw attention to his absence in his own end, his league lead in Gva, his 5th worse plus/minus among defencemen and his TGA (Total Goals Against). This is how the Organization manages perception (in the same way they convinced the hordes Annika was a great leader).

For those who don’t like graduates from the Q, Couturier, the kid who dominated in Canadian Major Junior Hockey, now has 36 points and is plus 2 (Murray chose Zzzz over him). Last night Couturier had an assist in Philly’s 2-1 win over the KIngs. He must be a SHOOTER ’cause he had 5 of them but the stat I really like, is his 5 take aways. Murray prefered Zzzz who rode the pines in the SEL. Last night Zzzz had 3 shots (PP), no take aways and now has 27 points with minus 15! Why Hoffman is on his left side makes no sense to me.

You have to wonder how long it will continue.

  29. PaV says:

Bobby what is the point? All you do is come on here and say the same thing over and over and over again. I have proven it, and so has OD and so has Mike – give it up and ‘give your head a shake.’ You are just silly. You don’t have questions. You have rants and immature nicknames. Grow up.

OD – EK being a +3 must mean he was the worst player on the ice.

  30. OD99 says:

Ah Booby…at it again, putting words in my mouth.

YOU mon amis were the one to loudly and repeatedly let us know that these guys from the Q were infinitely better than Zibanejad and you harp on every game that Couturier scores a goal so I merely pointed out that Huberdeau – who lit up the Q and was drafted before Zibanejad isn’t having a very good year as a comparison.

You immediately turn that into, “Dave doesn’t like players from the Q”. I have never said that and in fact I have never even insinuated that.

Now you tell me, in all honesty, is that how you want to stimulate dialogue? When you do that, it effectively ENDS an ability to have discussion because if you are just going to twist whatever I or anyone says it is IMPOSSIBLE to create a discussion.

And why are you possibly complaining about Zibanejad killing penalties when that is one of the things you keep harping on about Couturier’s game as a positive?

Anyway, whatever…maybe there will be a possibility for discussion at some point.

  31. Bobby Goodman says:

Pav, MON AMI…Mate……my man……should Zzz play center, should he be on the ice in OT, should he kill penalties? What do you think….should he get the PP time he does…….do you even think? Pav, perhaps you have lock jaw ’cause you know diddly and the Habs are winning.

Dave, you can calm down. Indeed I introduced the fact that Huberdeau and Couturier were graduates of the Q where they dominated (they didn’t ride the pines in the SEL). I think you are being less than honest if you suggest you were merely pointing out that Huberdeau is having a bad year…you took the opportunity to take a shot at the Q and CHL hockey! Who ever suggested everyone who played Major Junior Hockey in Canada are great?! So, why introduce Huberdeau graduated from the QMJHL? Afterall, he won ROOKIE OF THE YEAR IN THE BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD! CHL graduates make up 60% of the draft and feed the NHL more than any other league. I favor kids from CHL…do you?

You want dialogue Davey, I suspect you don’t really. I expect nothing from Pav he simply doesn’t know anything at all but you do. So lets talk about a few things, I only ask that you be honest:

    - On what basis do you think Murray should continue as GM (does his record with the Sens inspire confidence?)
    - What gives you confidence the future looks bright for this Franchise
    - Do you sincerely think Zzzz should get the icetime he does and play in the middle
    - Are you still a believer in the DAC and DAACs (did you like the 11 others before)
    - I “harp” on Zzz killing penalties Davey, because Zzz NEVER ENGAGES NOR DOES HE EVER WIN A ONE ON ONE BATTLE SO WHY IS HE ON THE ICE (COUTURIER DOES!)
    - Do you think Zzz should play center, be on PP and OT…if so, why
    - If Karlsson doesn’t even try in his own end as writers and broadcasters are now saying…why are you so tolerant. Is it OK to pick and choose when to try…care?
    - Do you think (especially after watching Zzz and Michalek all year) they helped or hurt Spezza’s performance (-15 and -24)
    - If Ryan was frustrated and complained about two lines do you think Spezza having 10 different wingers over the year frustrated him? Did he complain…did it help or hurt his performance….could he have benefitted with wingers who could score more than 11g?
    - Do you agree that Karly plays primarlly with the teams very best every game: mostly when the Spezza and Turris lines are out and bulk of the 2 minutes every PP.
    - Doesn’t that give him an advantage to post great offensive numbers especially when he often beats the wingers up the ice?
    - isn’t it conspicuous that Spezza’s numbers got better immediately afer Zzzz was taken off the line? Why did that happen. BTW: Hemsky is playing the best hockey of his career, why?
Define a discussion Dave? Define Leadership?

Many great players have bad years Davey…and you may not believe it but it has nothing to do with where they may have played amateur hockey.

  32. PaV says:

OD – hence why there is no point. Bobby doesn’t want a discussion, all he wants to do is rant, make up childish nicknames and come here and bash our team. Same goes with Choke – all he does is come on here when the team is on a downward spiral. It is IMPOSSIBLE to create discussion with both, more so with Bobby – and when you point stuff out like his stating that the Habs were a stronger, more talented and better team – he denies it – but the nice thing about blogs is there are archives and if you go back to playoff time last year – its right there in black and white.

  33. Bobby Goodman says:

Habions and Suckubban is …… mature. I think in the privacy of your home….you must cry a lot Pav.

I offered up over a dozen items for discussion my very large…….er…..man. You are afraid to respond to even one of them. What is a discussion my very large…..er……man? Is Ole Ole Ole a discussion? Is thrashing a defencemen who plays defence for a team 16 points ahead of “you” a discussion? Are your desperate attempts to continually seek approval from Kevin, Mikey and Dave a ‘discussion”?

Tell you what….I will ask you a question Pav…my….er……man. Who is the best player in the NHL….how about….who do you think should win the Rookie of the Year (you have had a year to ponder one and many months for the other).

Why don’t you throw out topics for discussion Pav my….boy. I would be glad to share my dumbass thoughts….even introduce topics beyond the Senator Organization. I would be happy to talk to those issues. God knows I have brought up many over the year.

Oh yes, when I said the habs were bludgeoned into submission in the 1st round last year, I must have been referring to how must stronger than the Sens they were. When I talked about the 6-5, 235 pound Cowen beating on the 6′, 195 pound White, I must have been referring to Whites strength and the same can be said about Smitty beating up on another, Kassian too. When I said they pounded little Galagher, I was referrring to Galagher’s strenght (of heart and spirit perhaps). Did I say they were a better team, absolutely, that is why they faced the Sens in the first round! They are a better team again this year. More talented, nope…I did say however, that they played with more passion and they have players who show up, wont quit and are unafraid. That’s the nice thing about blogs, posts are archived and can be referenced.

I will be waiting for you to dig deep and respons to one of the 12 topics I introdiced to Dave and failing that (and you will) introduce some topics of your own. Put away the life size posters Pav…..climb out of the shadows…….wife away the tears. Lets talk!

  34. PaV says:

Bobby, my… er.. old immature man who seems to have no other life than to sit in front of his TV and armchair coach. Must be a really fulfilling… ummm life that you have. I would rather spend my time with um… er… my wife, you should give it a try with yours…my old immature man. Get out. Give your head a shake.

  35. OD99 says:

Booby I am as calm as can be and even your typical condescending tone can’t disrupt that.

Despite your attempts to deflect and really stop dialogue – I will play your game and answer (yet again) the questions that you want answered.

But let’s make one thing clear – your reading comprehension is not good. If you somehow took my comment about a player drafted before Zibby from the Q having an off year as a shot to the Q and the CHL that is only on you. I don’t need to explain further – it was a comparison to create dialogue but you took the low road, as you always do, and twisted it into something else.

And then yet again you TELL ME that I don’t really want dialogue right after I am asking for it…you are a piece of work man. You really do live in your own little world. Anyway – let’s see what happens when I answer your demands (and you even have to be condescending again…like I would bother to lie on a blog?)

    - On what basis do you think Murray should continue as GM?

Because he has taken an aging team with no prospects and turned them into a young team with one of the better prospect pools in the league and lots of cap space. He may not be able to use it based on ownership constraints but it is there.

    - What gives you confidence the future looks bright for this franchise?

Almost the same answer as above – we have a good goalie and a good young goalie plus a superstar on D and some star power up front. There isn’t a lot needed to make this team competitive and IF the young guys progress the improvement will come from within.

    - Do you think Zzzz should get the icetime he does and play in the middle?

I am torn – young players need time. I wish Zibby had played the entire year last year in the A but I do like some of the things he does in the middle. He drives the middle well but as I have said many, many times, I wish he had even a little bit of creativity off the rush. He can make some nice plays from down low, but he doesn’t create much. He also needs to learn how to get his shot off.

    - Are you still a believer in the DAC and DAACs (did you like the 11 others before)

I like how the team plays offensively but obviously they need help on D. I think they are being stubborn and refuse to change the game plan to fit the personnel.

    - I “harp” on Zzz killing penalties Davey, because Zzz NEVER ENGAGES NOR DOES HE EVER WIN A ONE ON ONE BATTLE SO WHY IS HE ON THE ICE (COUTURIER DOES!)

Agree to disagree – I think he does engage and he might not win the majority of his battles yet but he gets in there.

  36. OD99 says:

Continued to answer the questions Bobby demands to have a response to:

Do you think Zzz should play center, be on PP and OT…if so, why

I think this is close to the question above but OK…yes he should play center (for now – if he really proves it is a waste then make a change). Yes he should be on the 2nd PP unit – if the team had more success or other legitimate scorers perhaps I would feel differently. OT…meh, I don’t think he is a focus for OT but if Mac feels he is playing well then I say go ahead and put him out there. One goal against in a game that they were giving away is not what I would continue to use to judge a player…as someone wise once said, anyone can have a bad year – perhaps that only counts for players that the wise person likes?

    - If Karlsson doesn’t even try in his own end as writers and broadcasters are now saying…why are you so tolerant. Is it OK to pick and choose when to try…care?

You aren’t really going with what the media are telling you are you? That is hilarious. Still, I have said repeatedly that I don’t like seeing him when he isn’t giving it his all but I also don’t believe it happens nearly as much as you believe. He deosn’t get a free pass and I am not tolerant to it but I don’t just dislike his entire game because of it. Why don’t you, for once, explain why it is OK for Spezza to not back-check, not hit anyone, be a minus player?

    - Do you think (especially after watching Zzz and Michalek all year) they helped or hurt Spezza’s performance (-15 and -24)

Zibby played what, 5 games with Spezza? I won’t even answer that because it is ridiculous. Michalek has not had a good year and if the team had better wingers of course they should have played with Spezza.

    - If Ryan was frustrated and complained about two lines do you think Spezza having 10 different wingers over the year frustrated him? Did he complain…did it help or hurt his performance….could he have benefitted with wingers who could score more than 11g?

Obviously but he is also the star and should be able to elevate other’s games.

    - Do you agree that Karly plays primarlly with the teams very best every game: mostly when the Spezza and Turris lines are out and bulk of the 2 minutes every PP.

Nope – he plays half the game against the OTHER teams best, who he ends up with for Sens is mostly by accident.

    - Doesn’t that give him an advantage to post great offensive numbers especially when he often beats the wingers up the ice?

He it to be penalized because he is fast?

    - isn’t it conspicuous that Spezza’s numbers got better immediately afer Zzzz was taken off the line? Why did that happen. BTW: Hemsky is playing the best hockey of his career, why?

Again – Zibby is a non factor with Spezza. 5 games = career? Come on…

Define a discussion Dave? You not being a jerk and answering some questions posed to you with grace and maturity.

  37. Bobby Goodman says:

Murray took over a Stanley Cup contender. Were they old, you tell me: Heatley 25, Spezza 24, Fisher 27, Vermette 26, Kelly 27, Eaves 20 (14g), Mezaros 22, Volchenkov 26. Did the GM make them younger when he acquired: Smith, Richardson, Robitaille, Lapointe, Kovalev, Gonchar, Cullen, Stillman, Sutton…did he make them…better? Vermette and Fisher have 24 and 20 goals respectively. Kelly has had his best years in the League with Boston.

Dave loves the Team’s record: bounced from the 1st round twice, bounced in 2nd round once and missing the post season 3 times! He says the GM “filled the team with great prospects”…really? Weren’t Daisey, Silfverberg, Rund’sbad, Noesen, Da Costa, Pageau, Cowen, Gryba, Wierchoch….Zzzz all great prospects? Who are the great prospects? Is the goal of a GM to increase Cap Space? I thought the goal was to build a competitive team.

Dave loves Zzz but is torn….? He loves “the way he drives the middle”? What the hell does that mean and why would it be a good thing? He loves Zzz even if he wishes the 20 year old “would show EVEN A LITTLE BIT OF CREATIVITY”. A player can’t be creative he doesn’t want and is unable to carry the puck! Dave thinks he should play the PP and OT because…the Coach plays him on the PP and in OT. Who would have thought? Oh, and Zzzz “doesn’t win the majority of the battles but he gets in there”. Does he really? I know he pretends to “be in there”. Lets see how many he wins tonight, how many touches, nifty plays, hits, draws, points. If he is one of the young prospects Davey is referring to, the Franchise is in deep trouble, afterall, this kid has been disciplined for lack of effort on at least 3 ocassions. But, Dave thinks it is acceptable…Karly does it every game!

Davey says Zzzz should play center until he can’t play center…? He should know that lining up at the Dots doesn’t necessarily make a player a centerman. I have always though a center makes plays….you know….be creative. If a Zzz doesn’t even show a little bit of creativity (per Davey-boy) how can he be a centerman?

Davey-boy thinks Spezza doesn’t back check. He has been logging on to the Spezza-hater blogs too much (Is he really Sharon Crawford and the author of the Trade Spezza Letter to the Editor yesterday?). What may be too complicated for Davey and those like him is the notion that play makers are usually the ones deepest in the other teams end. when the puck is lost. Defencemen however, are supposed to defend. So while there may be an excuse for Spezza not being the first back, there is no excuse for a Defenceman. Am I going to fast for you Davey?

Spezza has played with many this year (10), all but Ryan (3 games) and Conacher were minus players (Zzz -15 and Milan -24). Interesting that Spez managed to help others play better: Annika, Heatley, Michalek, Android and now Hemsky. But no one can make Zzz better. Lord knows the DAC and GM have tried!

  38. OD99 says:

Wow – you are such a tool Bobby.
