Alex Ovechkin teases fans with Olympic skates

- February 10th, 2014

Alex Ovechkin teased fans on Monday when he tweeted a photo of the custom-made skates he’ll don when Team Russia hits the ice on Thursday against Slovenia.

The 28-year-old Washington Capitals winger revealed the boot of his skates, which feature the Russian flag but left the blades covered in the photo, leading some to speculate he might be holding something back.

During the 2010 Games in Vancouver, Ovechkin wore skates that featured flames, his No. 8 and a demonic sheep in reference to his name in Russian.

Ovechkin means “of the little sheep” in his native tongue.

Following an opening preliminary round game against the Slovenians, Russia will meet the U.S. and Slovakia.

In Group B action, Canada opens its bid to claim back-to-back hockey golds against Norway.

Canada will then round out group play against Austria and Finland.
