Yeah mon! Jamaican bobsleigh qualifies for Sochi

- January 18th, 2014

Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up …

We’ll stop there. You’ll be hearing and seeing plenty of that over the next month.

That’s right, a pair of Jamaican bobsledders have officially qualified for the Sochi Games.

Team Jamaica made the announcement a short time ago via a Twitter post:

Since then, news of the island nation’s Winter Olympics qualification has travelled around the globe, with fans making comparisons back to the hit 1993 film Cool Runnings, which details Jamaica’s appearance at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

The team missed out on the previous two Olympic Games, in Torino then Vancouver.

The two-man Jamaican team of Winston Watts and Marvin Dixon is currently ranked 39th in the world.

Jamaica has never medalled at a Winter Games — and likely still wont.

But, hey, it’s a feel-good story.

Prior to Saturday’s announcement, there had been concerns as to whether Team Jamaica would have enough funds to send the men to Sochi post-qualification.

“We still don’t really know at the moment if we’d even have enough funds or sponsorship to fly to Sochi,” Watts told the Telegraph of London last week. “It all depends. Our families need to be taken care of first. If there’s no funding, who knows?

Just so we don’t end on a down note, we leave you with this…
