The first full-length trailer for the movie adaption of Yann Martel’s 2001 book Life of Pi has finally been released.
After a number of directors expressed interest in the project – including Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie) and M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) will bring Pi to theatres November 21.
Martel’s Booker prize-winning book tells the story of Pi Patel (played by Suraj Sharma), an Indian boy who, after an accident at sea, finds himself adrift on the Pacific with a group of animals including a zebra and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.
The trailer’s visuals are absolutely stunning, including a life-like Bengal tiger and a fantastic shot of a humpback whale soaring skyward from the sea.
And after many years playing it straight, I like that Lee is once again flexing his creative eye (sorry, but I thought his adaptation of Marvel’s Hulk actually looked great).

Martel’s latest book, Beatrice & Virgil, a Holocaust allegory featuring stuffed animals, was released in 2010.
