If science fiction is your thing, Tom Cruise is definitely gunning for your attention with his next project, Oblivion.

Teaming up with TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski and Morgan Freeman, Cruise plays drone repairman Jack Harper who is on clean-up duty after a war destroys Earth. Humanity had to abandon the planet – or did they? Freeman shows up very Morpheus-like to let Cruise know that not all is what it seems. “They lied to you,” he says mysteriously. “It’s time you know the truth.”

After last year’s Rock of Ages and Jack Reacher, Oblivion continues Cruise’s streak of acting against type – it’ll be his first full-on sci-fi role since War of the Worlds.

A new TV spot doesn’t help clear up the plot, but it does offer up dazzling action sequences and images of a scorched planet that, if nothing else, look nice. Kosinski’s TRON was a mess plot-wise, but it was one of 2010′s best looking films.

And I’m not just talking about Olivia Wilde.

Check out the trailer and let us know what you think of Cruise’s latest.

Oblivion, which also stars Olga Kurylenko and Melissa Leo, opens April 19.
