DC made a huge announcement at Comic-Con today involving its two biggest characters. Instead of proceeding with Man of Steel 2 right away, the company announced that Superman and Batman will team-up in a new film that is due in 2015.

Zack Snyder will direct and co-write with Man of Steel scribe David S. Goyer and star Henry Cavill returning for the new film. It is unknown if Christian Bale will return as Batman, though he has previously said he is done with the character.

Snyder, who appeared at Comic-Con today, broke the news saying, “I’m so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can’t wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter. Let’s face it, it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest Super Heroes in the world.”

Diane Nelson, President, DC Entertainment, released a statement saying, “Superman and Batman together on the big screen is a dream come true for DC fans everywhere. All of us at DC Entertainment could not be more excited for Zack’s continuing vision for the DC Universe.”

Dark Knight trilogy director Christopher Nolan will executive produce the new film.

Batman and Superman have a long history of teaming up in the pages of DC comics, including a new title released last month written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Jae Lee.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Batman/Superman will be followed by The Flash (which Goyer wrote a script for in 2004) in 2016 and Justice League in 2017.

Since its release last month, Snyder’s Man of Steel has grossed over $630 million worldwide.

The summer of 2015 is shaping up to be a busy one with the J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars sequel, The Avengers 2, Pirates of the Caribbean 5, Terminator 5 and Independence Day 2 all slated for release.

“it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off,”
what????? Two forces fighting against the crime world are going to “face-off”???
    I don’t think so.

Batman should watch all four Bourne movies to learn how to fight. The fighting choreography in the 3rd Batman movie was embarrassingly bad.

I would have to disagree with you on Urban being the right choice for Batman, Dave. I think Armie Hammer should take on the role.
