David Fincher definitely has a thing for the ‘girls.’

After his 2011 adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the Oscar-nominated director is reportedly eyeing Gone Girl as one of his next film projects.

The best-selling thriller written by Gillian Flynn has been a runway success since its release last summer. Flynn has written the screenplay, with Reese Witherspoon producing.

If he decides to direct the film, Fincher will be on familiar turf. Flynn’s chilling book tells the story of a woman who vanishes on her fifth wedding anniversary with her husband pegged as the main suspect in her disappearance.

Fincher, who is in the running to direct Star Wars Episode VII (as a teen, he worked as an assistant on Return of the Jedi), also has a 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea reboot in the works and may direct the follow-ups to Dragon TattooThe Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.

Fincher previously has said that if he returned for the next two instalments in Larsson’s Millennium series, he would want to shoot them back-to-back.

For Fincher fans, this is all good news. No matter what he decides, it means we won’t have to wait five years until his next feature.
