James Spader to play Ultron in ‘Avengers 2′

Marvel has announced that James Spader will be playing the maniacal robot Ultron in its upcoming Avengers sequel.

In a recent interview with EW, writer-director Joss Whedon said the supervillain is the perfect nemesis for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

“As a character I love [Ultron],” Whedon said, “because he’s so pissed off… He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff.”

In the comics, Ultron is the invention of Henry “Hank” Pym a.k.a. Ant-Man. Whedon has already said that Pym won’t be making an appearance in the Avengers sequel.

“We don’t have to have [Henry Pym],” Whedon told Annalee Newitz of io9.com. “It works very simply — this is Marvel cinema, not Marvel comics.”

And in a separate interview with THR, Whedon said, “”We’re doing our own version of the origin story of Ultron.”

So there is a possibility that the killer robot could be the offspring of one of the Avengers (I’m looking at you, Tony Stark). An omitted scene from The Avengers hinted as much.

Spader will be seen on NBC’s spy drama The Blacklist this fall. He has a long list of credits on his resume, including Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, David Cronenberg’s Crash and his role as Robert California on The Office. So I’m really intrigued by Marvel’s choice here.

What do you think of Spader’s casting as a homicidal robot? Let us know in the comments.

  1. Love "Ultron" but not having WASP or Antman? | August 29, 2013 at 9:06 pm

I love Ultron as the supervillain but to not include Wasp or Ant-man who helped to create him is wrong. For the main reason that Ultron is Harry Pym if Harry did not have his morals intact.
