New trailer for ‘Jack Reacher’ starring Tom Cruise

Fans of author Lee Child’s long-running crime series were miffed when news broke that Tom Cruise was going to portray the big-screen incarnation of his Jack Reacher character. See, the thing is Reacher is a big, imposing man who lets his fists do the talking and Tom is, well, a wee bit vertically challenged.

But after seeing the second trailer for Reacher, which is due out December 21, I kinda like how Cruise is channeling Liam Neeson a la Taken. “Do you think I’m a hero? I am not a hero…” Cruise warns one of the villains, before adding, “…I’d like to kill you.”

Cruise goes bad-ass? The last time he did that as the villain in Michael Mann’s Collateral he totally stole the show.

Reacher isn’t your standard hero – he’s an ex-military investigator who dishes out his own brand of justice. So I like the prospect of watching Cruise play a character who is a little frayed around the edges.

Bonus points for casting Werner Herzog as the villain and the always reliable Robert Duvall as one of Reacher’s allies.

Jack Reacher is being adapted by Usual Suspects scribe Christopher McQuarrie and is based on Child’s One Shot – the ninth book in the Reacher series.

Watch the trailer and let us know what you think of Cruise’s latest in the comments below.

Tom Cruise is no Jack Reacher. If you are a true fan of the Lee Childs book series then you will not be happy with the choice of Cruise as the lead. Josh Duhamel would have been a better choice.

Having read all the Reacher books I could find, I’m REALLY disappointed with the choice of Tom Cruise in the roll. I would have loved to watch a real Reacher movie but I’ll be sitting this one out.

    I agree,
but I also felt that way in his casting of Interview with a vampire. Did a helluva alot better than people thought he would. Here’s hoping for the same!

Folks, I spoke with Lee Child last weekend in Toronto when he was here for the IFOA. He’s seen Jack Reacher and is confident fans are going to love it. The interview will appear early next week.

Nope, Mr. Child has $$ in his eyes – which made an actor of 5’5″ appear a foot taller. I love his book series – mistrust his judgement, I am waiting for the Liev Schreiber or Dolph Lundgren version – won’t be at the theatre for the munchkin…

Mark, Glad to Lee Child is confident the fans will love it… But…Tom (Shorty) Cruise? Seriously? I love the books, but the fans won’t love the movie, at least I know I won’t. I will not waste my money on this flick. When I read the books, (And I have read most of them), I imagine Tom Selleck (Magnum) as Jack. Cruise has done a fine job in many movies. Top Gun is an all time favorite of mine. But he is not the right actor for Reacher. There are many others that would have fit the part better. I guess I will save my money and buy another book. Hate to spoil the image I have. Maybe I will go see what Grisham is working on.

Avid JR/LC fan, but disgusted at choice of TCruise!
Doug Thomas used a great phrase “spoil the image”…Staying away from this movie.
