Stephen Colbert’s cameo in ‘The Hobbit’ revealed

- December 31st, 2013

A sharp-eyed redditor has captured the late-night TV funnyman Stephen Colbert’s brief cameo in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug.

Director Peter Jackson told EW in 2012 that the host of The Colbert Report was the biggest J.R.R. Tolkien geek he’d ever met. “Philippa Boyens is our resident Tolkien expert, and when Stephen came down to visit the set, we put him head to head with Philippa on a Tolkien quiz—and Stephen triumphed. I have to say, his encyclopedic knowledge of Tolkien is spectacular, and points to a deprived childhood in some respects.”

So ever since filming on the trilogy began, rumours had been swirling that Colbert would be making an appearance in The Hobbit trilogy.

In addition to Stephen, his wife and two sons show up in the scene, which takes place in Laketown as Bard (Luke Evans), is sneaking back home. A GIF from reddit shows the bit part.

One redditor gave a more detailed description of the scene: “It’s right as the dwarves are sneaking into Laketown. Bard’s son stops them and says that there are spys (sic) watching the house. Shortly after it shows Bard and his Son walking alone and the camera pans to the right and shows Stephen looking at them and he turns his head and his eyepatch falls down.”

Jackson also gave himself a cameo in the sequel, showing up in the first scene eating a carrot.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug is in theatres now.
