Vin Diesel to play Groot in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

- December 22nd, 2013

After months of speculation, Marvel has officially announced that Vin Diesel will voice the part of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy.

The news was confirmed on the company’s website, with a photo of Diesel hugging a model of his CG character in front of a Guardians of the Galaxy logo. The site also mentions that Diesel will be reprising his role as Dominic Toretto in Fast & Furious 7, which seems to indicate filming on that sequel, which was halted in the wake of Paul Walker’s death, should be moving ahead shortly.

Diesel has been teasing the role since July by posting photos of himself standing in front of an Avengers comic book cover and a pic of the “tree” creature on his Facebook page.

“Marvel meeting today,” Diesel wrote in one post. “Only the people in the room can tell you what was discussed.”

GOTG is the final film in Marvel’s Phase Two before Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theatres in May 2015.

Adapted from the Marvel comic that follows the ragtag adventures of an unlikely group of space warriors, the James Gunn-directed film features an eclectic cast that includes Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Bradley Cooper (voicing Rocket Raccoon), Lee Pace (Ronan the Accuser), John C. Reilly (Rhomann Dey), Glenn Close (Nova Prime), and Benicio Del Toro (The Collector).

Guardians of the Galaxy hits theatres Aug. 1, 2014.
