Robert Redford drops possible ‘Captain America 2′ spoiler

Up until now, all we knew about Robert Redford’s role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier was that he was playing Alexander Pierce, a senior agent within S.H.I.E.L.D. Presumably it would be a small supporting role in what Marvel studio boss Kevin Feige said will be a “’70s political thriller masquerading as a big superhero movie.”

But if you assumed he was going to be playing one of the good guys, you might be wrong.

During an interview with The Straits Times (via Here Be Geeks), Redford clarified the role and his comments, if true, revealed a huge potential spoiler.

He said: “I like the idea of playing a villain. … I did that just because it’s a different thing for me to do.”

Currently, Cap is set to battle three villains – Crossbones (Frank Grillo), Batroc the Leaper (Georges St-Pierre) and Arnim Zola (Toby Jones) – with a present-day storyline that finds best friend Bucky turned into a brainwashed assassin. If Redford turns about to be evil, that’s a whole lotta bad guys.

Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury will appear alongside Chris Evans’ Star-Spangled Avenger, with Anthony Mackie joining the superhero team as the high-flying Falcon.

If the news about Redford is true, he could be playing Red Skull and his “supporting role” could mean he’s the main bad dude around which all the other bad dudes revolve.

Of course, nothing is confirmed until Marvel says it is. But it’s fun to speculate.

In the meantime, Marvel has released two new pieces of concept art that show the Winter Assassin which look rather cool.

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre is joining Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the villain Batroc the Leaper, Latino-Review reports.

I’ve never heard of the character, but here’s what Marvel says about him:

Batroc has no superhuman powers, but he is one of the most formidable unarmed combatants in the world. He has mastered numerous martial arts and is perhaps the world’s leading master of savate, the French art of foot-fighting.

Captain America 2 isn’t GSP’s first foray into films, but it’s certainly his highest profile role. Previously, the Montreal-native has appeared in such notable films as Death Warrior, Hell’s Chain and Never Surrender.

Seen any of those? Didn’t think so.

This casting news follows last week’s announcement that Oscar-winner Robert Redford is joining the film as a veteran S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.

Chris Evans will once again star as the Star-Spangled Avenger, with Anthony Mackie set to play Cap’s sidekick, The Falcon, and Frank Grillo portraying the villainous Crossbones, a New York gangster who works for the Red Skull criminal organization.

Joe and Anthony Russo (Community) will be behind the camera, which is part of Marvel’s Phase Two film series.

So, with this latest news do you think GSP has a future on the big screen? Let us know how you think he’ll do as an actor in the comments.

It appears Steve Rogers has found his leading lady.

According to Deadline, Revenge star Emily VanCamp has been tapped to play Sharon Carter (aka Agent 13) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Sharon Carter is the niece of Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), who was Cap’s love interest in the first film.

Sharon is a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and love interest for the Star-Spangled Avenger (Chris Evans).

Early reports pegged Anna Kendrick, Felicity Jones and Imogen Poots in the running for the role.

In other casting news, Anthony Mackie is set to play Cap’s sidekick The Falcon in the new film, with Frank Grillo playing the villainous Crossbones, a New York gangster who works for the Red Skull criminal organization.

Anthony and Joe Russo (Community) are directing (who are promising a “darker, edgier” sequel), with Captain America: The First Avenger scribes Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus writing.

After taking inspirational cues from 1940s films in the first film, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige says Cap’s new adventure will have a completely different tone.

“It will almost be a different genre of film, which I’ve never seen before in a sequel,” he said in an interview with Wired last year.

So, are you happy with the proposed new direction? Personally, I would have liked to see Hayley Atwell back as Peggy Carter.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be released April 4, 2014.
