Apocalypse cancelled in new ‘Pacific Rim’ trailer

“Go big or go extinct!”

You have to admit, it’s a pretty catchy tagline.

Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming monsters vs. machines epic, Pacific Rim, won’t be out for another couple of months, but the fine folks at Warner Bros. have released a two-plus minute trailer for the film that debuted at WonderCon last month.

“This was originally intended for only WonderCon,” Del Toro writes in a note accompanying the video, “but after listening to so many of you asking for more of the movie online, I think it’s time for me to show you more footage. Enjoy, my friends!”

And from the looks of it, if you are in any way interested in sci-fi and action this is pretty much in your wheelhouse.

We get a few more tidbits of info from the new trailer – alien life rose from the Pacific and started an attack on cities. San Francisco was its first target. After that, the Jaeger program was born – two pilots, mind-melding through memories with the body of a machine. Or, as nerd scientist Dr. Newton Geiszler (Charlie Day) puts it: “2,500 tonnes of awesome.”

The special effects look stellar, so methinks you’ll want to see this one on the big screen. Besides, I challenge you to name one other movie this year where you’ll see a giant robot swinging an ocean tanker like Jose Bautista swings his bat.

That scene alone looks like it’s worth the price of admission.

Pacific Rim hits theatres on July 12.

And if on the off chance monsters and robots ain’t your thing, you can also check out the final trailer for Fast & Furious 6, which hits theatres May 24.

Planes, tanks and automobiles will go kaboom in no particular order. Oh, and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) is back. But you already knew that.

To borrow a line from The A-Team, this trailer “specializes in the ridiculous.” But it sure looks like a whole lot of fun.

Let us know what you think of Pacific Rim and Fast & Furious 6 in the comments.

‘Fast and Furious 6′ trailer: The Rock and Vin Diesel team up for ‘vehicular warfare’

- February 5th, 2013

fast6

During Sunday’s Super Bowl, we got a snippet of the action that awaits when Fast & Furious 6 hits screens May 24. Insane car flips, explosions and witty puns were just the tip of the iceberg.

And if you liked the little taste, an extended trailer that debuted this morning shows stunts that border on the ridiculous. We get tank action and exploding planes as well. All matter of “vehicular warfare” ensues.

I’ll have seconds, thanks.

At the end of the fifth film, DSS Agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson) had given Dominic Torretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and the rest of their outlaw crew from the the series a running start. A post-credits scene revealed Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), Dom’s girlfriend, who he thought was dead, is very much alive.

But if you thought No. 6 would be one long chase with Hobbs tracking Torretto’s gang (cough, me), you’d be wrong. In the new film, Hobbs and Torretto team up to go after former spec-ops soldier Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) who runs a criminal organization.

Torretto agrees in order to get back Letty, who may not be the Letty we all remember. Sorry, who was she again?

It’s not Star Wars, but the Fast & Furious series has gotten better with each new release (OK, there was a hiccup in the middle).

I’m also loving Gina Carrano as Hobbs’ kick-ass partner.

Check out the trailer below and let us know if you think this series is played out.

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Super Bowl trailer debuts online

- February 4th, 2013

star trek bowl

Between the wings, dip and beer, you might have missed the plethora of movie ads studios dropped during last night’s Super Bowl.

There were new spots for Star Trek Into Darkness, Iron Man 3, Fast & Furious 6, The Lone Ranger, Oz The Great and Powerful and World War Z.

My personal fave was the Into Darkness spot.

After months of teasing, we get a fresh look at Benedict Cumberbatch’s villain going mano a mano with Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk. Very Hannibal Lecter-y.

“I’m better,” the steely Cumberbatch says.

“At what?” Kirk replies.

“Everything.”

There are also new scenes of the U.S.S. Enterprise plummeting towards Earth and Spock (Zachary Quinto) in a volcano. And the new trailer comes with a new tagline: ‘Our world will fall.’

For extreme Trek fans, Paramount has revealed a new app for the film.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Not to be outdone by Trek, Marvel released an extended trailer for Iron Man 3 that kinda irritates with a Downey gag off the top, but we do get a look at a pulse-pounding sequence in which Tony Stark has to save passengers after Air Force One is attacked. Thirteen people are careening towards the ground and Iron Man can only rescue four. Hashtag: #superheroproblems.
