After a long search, Marvel has settled on Parks & Recreation star Chris Pratt as the lead for its outer space-themed Guardians of the Galaxy, Deadline reports.

The film is based on a comic that debuted in 1969 before getting its own series in the 1990s. It is part of Phase Two of Marvel’s cinematic expansion, which officially gets underway with Iron Man 3 this May.

Pratt will be playing Peter Quill, a half-alien, half-human who’s reinvented as Star-Lord – the leader of a rag-tag group of inter-galatic heroes that includes a genetically engineered racoon, a monstrous tree, a reincarnated human and the “Deadliest Woman in the Whole Universe.”

They will be presumably battling Thanos, who was glimpsed briefly at the end of The Avengers.

According to Deadline, Marvel had been on the hunt for its Star-Lord for many months, pursuing Joseph-Gordon Levitt (who opted to do Sin City 2), and testing Joel Edgerton and Jim Sturgess, among others.

Directed by James Gunn (Slither), Guardians will follow sequels to Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, and will be the last film before all the heroes reunite for The Avengers 2 in 2015.

If you’re unsure whether Pratt can do serious, might we remind you, he’s currently in Zero Dark Thirty. You don’t get more serious than that.

Guardians of the Galaxy hits theatres Aug. 1, 2014.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt joining ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’?

- January 2nd, 2013

Joseph-Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt could be turning in his Bat-cape for a go with Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy.

According to Deadline.com, Gordon-Levitt’s name has been added to a list of actors on the short list to play Star-Lord in director James Gunn’s adaptation of the Marvel comic book.

Other actors in contention include Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty), Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas), Lee Pace (The Hobbit) and Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables).

Gordon-Levitt, who appeared in Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, was rumoured to be doing a cameo as Batman in this year’s Man of Steel before taking over the part from Christian Bale in DC Comics’ upcoming Justice League film. (His reps later denied he’d be appearing in the upcoming Superman reboot.)

If Gordon-Levitt lands the role, it wouldn’t be the first time an actor has played in both the Marvel and DC world. Ryan Reynolds had roles in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (as Deadpool), Blade (as Hannibal King) and Green Lantern. He’ll also star in R.I.P.D later this year, which is based on a Dark Horse comic.

The Guardians Of The Galaxy are a galactic superhero team (which includes a raccoon) that made their debut in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 in 1969. They got their own monthly series in 2008.

Their leader, Star-Lord, heads up a group of aliens who protect the universe. Thanos, who appears at the end of The Avengers, will be the villain in the Guardians and may have a role in The Avengers 2.

The Guardians have a long history with Marvel, appearing with Thor in 1977 and a 10-issue arc of The Avengers in 1978.

Whomever plays Star-Lord would most likely appear in some capacity in Joss Whedon’s Avengers sequel and future spin-offs. So if it’s JGL, we expect he’ll be a busy boy over the next few years.

Guardians Of The Galaxy is scheduled to hit theatres August 1, 2014.

Would you like to see JGL joining the Marvel universe, or would you prefer he take over the role of Batman? Let us know in the comments.
