James Gunn to write, direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ sequel

- July 25th, 2014

James Gunn will be stepping behind the lens a second time for Marvel, sources have confirmed.

Nicole Perlman, Gunn’s co-writer on the movie, confirmed to The Wrap on Friday at San Diego Comic Con that Gunn and Marvel have signed a contract for the blockbuster’s sequel.

“It’s a decision that’s based on what the buzz is, what the box office predication is,” Pearlman told The Wrap. “James will be directing Guardians 2, so he would also be writing Guardians 2,” Pearlman confirmed.

Gunn had previously said he would be up to making a sequel, confessing in various interviews he began thinking about a sequel since the moment they began production on the most recent film.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is releasing world wide on August 2, and is expected to make at least $60 million over its opening weekend.

‘Guardians and Avengers will team up’: James Gunn

- July 24th, 2014

James Gunn, director of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy movie, has some big news for Marvel fans.

And he’s not even at Comic-Con!

In an interview with Digital Spy, Gunn confirmed some of the Avengers and some of the Guardians will need to team up, and the website believes it will be in an effort to take down Thanos.

“In the future, either some of the Guardians and some of the Avengers will meet at some point in time,” Gunn said.

It’s not overly surprising, as one colleague pointed out, considering the two superhero teams take place within in the same Marvel universe.

Different planets, sure, but what does that all matter when transporting between planets is as simple as building a golden space road. Thanks Thor.

Gunn also admitted he’s had ideas for a sequel in his head since he began filming this one.

“I wanted to set it up as a movie by itself, but I also wanted to set up a whole new galaxy of characters that we could play with in different ways,” he said. “I have a ton of ideas for things we could do, we just have to see how it goes.”

The company made the announcement via its Facebook page earlier today. Fans who attend the preview will also receive a limited edition collectible Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Imax poster. The movie will be the last in Marvel’s Phase 2 before Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theatres next summer.

To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. Marvel drops new clip for ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

- April 8th, 2014

Marvel has released a new 60-second clip from this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy (via MTV). The new ad recycles some of the footage we’ve already seen in the trailer in which Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord attempts to steal a mysterious floating orb. Speculation is that it is one of the infinity stones from Thor: The Dark World.

Things don’t go smoothly, and when he finds himself held up by Korath (Djimon Hounsou), Star-Lord looks a little non-plussed after the rival gang hasn’t heard of him.

Then we get into the new stuff. Star-Lord drops to the ground and then rockets out of there with a pair of high-powered boots, giving us the first glimpse of his space helmet, as well as some of his intergalactic toys. And as a series of explosions go off around him, Star-Lord is seen running in leaps and bounds across the terrain of an unknown extra-terrestrial planet.

Pretty cool getaway.

It looks more and more likely that Guardians will tie in with Thor (a post-credits Dark World scene ties in with the new film).

If you’ve seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier, you’ll know that it hints at… Wait, I’m not going to spoil that for you.

Guardians of the Galaxy opens Aug. 1.

‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’: Marvel releases official trailer and new photos

- February 19th, 2014

After its world premiere on last night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, Marvel has released the first official trailer for this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy. And if you were worried about the departure from tried and true franchises like Iron Man and The Hulk, don’t. The two-minute clip looks like it’s going to be fun sci-fi romp in the vein of Stars Wars (yes, I mean the original trilogy).

The spot opens with Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) trying to steal a mysterious sphere. When a group of armed aliens show up led by Djimon Hounsou (playing Korath the Pursuer), he’s asked who he is, Quill replies, “Star-Lord… the legendary outlaw.”

“Who?” Korath asks dumbfounded.

After that, the action moves to an off-world prison where John C. Reilly gives us the skinny on Quill and his space pals who have been arrested on Xandar including Drax the Destroyer (he’s been on a rampage across the galaxy in a search for vengeance since his family was killed); Gamora (soldier, assassin wanted on over a dozen counts of murder); Rocket Raccoon (he’s wanted on over 50 charges of vehicular theft); Groot (a houseplant that’s Rocket’s muscle) and Peter Quill (public intoxication sounds about right).

“They call themselves the Guardians of the Galaxy,” Reilly’s Rhomann Dey quips.

“What a bunch of a-holes,” Peter Serafinowicz’ Nova Corps Officer replies.

The rest of the clip shows off some pretty spectacular action set to Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling.”

Here’s the official synopsis:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team–the Guardians of the Galaxy.
