‘Man of Steel’ trailer: Darker Superman on tap?

When Man of Steel hits theatres next summer, it looks like we’ll get yet another origin story for Superman.

But as an earlier teaser hinted at, director Zack Snyder’s take on Krypton’s favourite son appears to be going the same route as Christopher Nolan’s just-completed Batman trilogy – heavy on the brooding, dark on the cinematography, stylish on the action.

The trailer for Man of Steel will play before The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, when it opens on Dec. 14. But before its big screen debut, fans online get the first taste.

The redo doesn’t look like a complete overhaul, but it appears there will be conflict between Clark Kent and his dad after the youngster saves his classmate’s life.

“What was I supposed to do? Just let him die?” Clark asks.

“Maybe,” his dad, played by Kevin Costner, replies.

An oft-bearded Henry Cavill stars as Superman (not to worry, he’s clean cut by the time he dons the cape). Costner and Diane Lane play his adopted parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent; Russell Crowe plays Superman’s real father, Jor-El; Michael Shannon is the villainous General Zod and Amy Adams stars as Lois Lane. We also get glimpses of Laurence Fishburne (Perry White) and Christopher Meloni.

In the trailer we see plenty of flying action from Supes, then some brooding and then some buildings blow up. Snyder has already stated that the film will tie into a planned Justice League team-up in 2015.

By the end, Superman is in handcuffs and in a voice over (presumably addressing Lois Lane) he says, “My father believed that if the world found out who I really was, they would reject me. He was convinced that the world wasn’t ready. What do you think?”

Man of Steel will be released June 14, 2013.

‘Man of Steel’ teaser trailer debuts

After plenty of speculation, we now have an idea of what shape next summer’s Superman reboot will take.

Like producer Christopher Nolan’s reimagining of Batman in 2005, director Zack Synder’s upcoming film looks like it will be a complete overhaul of DC’s moribund franchise.

In two clips, both with the same imagery, but with different narrations, we see the Man of Steel hitchhiking (wait, hitchhiking?), frolicking in a field and plugging away on a fishing boat (when did Supes ever fish?).

In the first, Russell Crowe, who plays Jor_el, the father of the Last Son of Krypton, predicts his son will, “give the people an ideal to strive towards… (and) help them accomplish wonders.”

In the other, Kevin Costner, in the role of Superman’s adoptive father Jonathan Kent, says, “One day, you’re going to have to make a choice. You’ll have to decide what kind of man you want to grow up to be.”

We get almost no glimpse of action, save for the trailer’s final scene, and no look at the villain General Zod (played by Michael Shannon).

Personally, I like the brooding look of the trailer. And after the excessively visual, but story-challenged Sucker Punch, it appears that Man of Steel is making an honest effort to revive the Superman franchise by focusing on telling the story behind the world’s first greatest hero.

Take a look at the trailers below and let us know if you’re excited for Man of Steel.

The film hits theatres in 3-D and 2-D on June 14, 2013.
