We’re a little more than a month away from the release of Star Trek Into Darkness and the fine folks over at Paramount have released a new batch of images.
The stills give us an up close look at the characters in action. There’s also a new, mayhem-filled trailer to feast your eyes on.
Check ‘em out Trekkies and let us know what you think in the comments.
You have to give director J.J. Abrams credit. Despite oodles of Internet speculation, he has managed to keep the identity of the villainous character Benedict Cumberbatch plays in this summer’s Star Trek Into Darkness a secret.
Some Trekkies went into a tizzy after a trailer last month hinted at Khan, while others speculated that Cumberbatch will be playing Gary Mitchell, who appeared in the episode, Where No Man Has Gone Before.
Despite all the talk, Abrams’ secret is remarkably still safe. And it’s killing Cumberbatch.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cumberbatch called the secrecy surrounding his role “achingly irritating.”
“Believe me, I’d rather talk about the role and the fantastic story and all the things J.J. [Abrams] has come up with. And then everyone would be as excited about the film as I am.”
Praising Abrams’ ability to keep his last film, 2011′s Super 8, under wraps, Cumberbatch added: “Mystique is rare now, isn’t it? There aren’t that many enigmas in this modern world. Myself, I quite enjoyed seeing Super 8 and not knowing the story and then being mesmerized by it … [but] we live in the modern world, which is a place of oversaturation and now people, especially Trekkies, want to know everything before they witness it themselves. It’s strange to me. I think of it as a kid having a box of chocolates and not knowing what’s good for them. They eat three and they keep eating as they get sick… and the candy is gone.”
So with that said, what do you think of Trek bosses being all mysterious about the series’ next villain? Should Abrams just reveal who Cumberbatch is playing, or do you want to be surprised when the film opens May 17? Let us know in the comments.
After the first teaser trailer earlier this month, we’re getting an expanded look at next summer’s Star Trek Into Darkness .
The new ad is very much focused on Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk and shows as a longer take of the ‘Red Forest’ chase scene that ends with Kirk leaping off a cliff.
In a voice over, Kirk’s boss Christopher Pike (played by Bruce Greenwood) admonishes the young captain. “You have greatness in you,” Pike says as the camera pans over Kirk. “But there isn’t an ounce of humility. You think you can’t make mistakes, but there’s going to come a moment when you realize you’re wrong about that and you’re going to get yourself and everyone under your command killed.”
Heavy stuff.
We then get another dose of Benedict Cumberbatch (as the film’s villain), who repeats his chilling line from the earlier trailer: “You think you’re safe. You are not.”
Things go boom, but we finally get some scenes off Earth (yay!) and two cool sequences: One of Kirk hurtling through space and another of someone from Starfleet jumping off a skyscraper.
Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu), Karl Urban (Bones) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov) make brief appearances, and the trailer once again ends with that nod (or is it?) to Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan.
