Smile, damn you, smile!
That’s what actor Christoph Waltz ordered us all to do in his opening monologue of ‘Saturday Night Live’.
So, did we?
Well, there was definitely a sketch or two worth flashing some pearly whites at – but was anyone even watching? Let’s face it – Waltz’s name doesn’t exactly hold a lot of weight with the kids online, and it’s hard hyping a 56-year-old Austrian on the same night as the NBA All-star slam dunk contest.
Those who did check out the show saw Waltz flexing his comedy muscle by playing a game show host, a man in love with a rude, snobby feminist (played by Fred Armisen), and a virginal soul brother who wrecked slow jams with his nerdy lyrics.
But perhaps Waltz’s best performance of the night was as a vengeful Jesus Christ in the pre-recorded movie trailer spoof “Djesus Uncrossed.”
The trailer is an ingenious mashup of “Django Unchained” and “Inglourious Basterds” (both Oscar-nominated Quentin Tarantino films starring Waltz) and features a blood-thirsty Jesus gunning down Romans and slicing through their heads ‘Walking-Dead’ style.
Some of the best lines of ‘Djesus’:
“He may be wearing sandals, but he can still kick ass.”
And this one:
“When you get to heaven, say hi to my dad.”
