Oz-some collection of Dorothys

Toronto will be overrun by potential Dorothys this week, all looking to make a Rainbow Connection.

Oh wait, that’s The Muppets, wrong movie. Obviously, we’re talking about The Wizard of Oz here. That’s the original Dorothy, Judy Garland, pictured above.

On Monday, June 18, the Toronto auditions for the upcoming CBC reality-competition series Over The Rainbow will be held at the Glenn Gould Studio in the CBC building in Toronto (“lions and tigers and unions, oh my”). Similar auditions already have taken place in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal and Halifax.

Then, on Thursday, June 21, also in Toronto, the top 100 Dorothys from across the country will be on hand for call-back auditions.

At this point in the process, the goal for the gals is to be selected as one of 10 Dorothys who will compete on TV this fall, in a reality series hosted by Daryn Jones. Eventually, the TV show will whittle it down to a single champion Dorothy, who will star in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new production of The Wizard of Oz, opening in Toronto this December.

When you get right down to it, all reality-competition shows basically follow the same format, so with only slight tweaking here and there, it’s just a matter of what clicks with the public and what doesn’t.

Okay, CBC, here’s a new twist you should consider:

Have a similar competition for who’s going to play the Wicked Witch of the West. And make it so that members of the public can nominate the most wicked witches in their own lives, without anyone’s knowledge or consent.

Involuntary reality competition, TV’s next yellow brick road.
