Crown must appeal disgraceful sentence for James

- March 22nd, 2012

The only thing more disgraceful than the paltry two-year sentence convicted pedophile Graham James received for repeatedly sexually assaulting two boys in the 1980s and 1990s would be if the Crown decided not to appeal the case.

James’ lawyer Evan Roitenberg asked for a conditional sentence of 18-24 months for the former disgraced junior hockey coach, while the Crown asked for a six-year prison term. Provincial court Judge Catherine Carlson showed sympathy for James and gave him only two years in prison when she handed down her sentence March 20.

james

Obviously she came nowhere near what the Crown had requested which is pathetic considering the prosecution’s submission was on the low end of the sentencing range for this type of serial criminal.

An appeal is warranted in this case because Carlson failed to ensure James received a fit sentence. And it is on that basis that the Crown should appeal. This sentence should not be allowed to stand. It has brought the administration of justice into disrepute.

Remorse that he has shown and the fact that he has not reoffended since are not excusses for the horrer this coward has inflicted on his victims. There is not other crimminal worse than one who will take advantage of a child and as such should never walk the streets again.

There is no room on the face of the earth for people such as this man. Nothing short of life in prison should be dealt.

This judge should be ashamed by this sentance. How the women can look in the mirror in the morning after handing down such a pathetic sentance is beyond me.

    Catherine Carlson Please step down

I find it strange that people are being fined millions for downloading songs, Micheal Vick spends 21 months in prison for killing some dogs (yes it was wrong) and Mr. James gets almost the same sentence for preying on, and sodomizing young boys for years on end….
    Yes…..you gotta love justice.

Unbelievable a man is allowed to do this and then basically get away with it. I’m sure Theo wouldn’t appreciate knowing he may have the opportunity to do this again…….Our Justice System is in deep need of a good revamping….I have personally seen good people make mistakes that only hurt themselves and go through more grief and get tougher penalties for doing much less…….
