Congratulations to NDP MLA Erin Selby on her appointment to Premier Greg Selinger’s cabinet.
Selby was given the advanced education portfolio Monday in anticipation of October’s provincial election, where the NDP will be trying to hang on to south-end seats like Selby’s Southdale riding.
To commemorate Selby’s new appointment, I present to you two of her best quotations from debate in the legislative assembly.
The topic: Photo radar.
The slant: Selby said in 2009 that her constituents want more photo radar vehicles in their neighbourhod.
“One of their ideas since about last year has been, could I please talk to our local city councilor about getting more photo radar in Island Lakes,” Selby said June 9, 2009 in the legislature. “They have been asking that for a year.”
Actually, now that Selby is in cabinet, I think she’ll have far more success at convincing her city councilor to get more photo radar vehicles in her community. And it’s a good thing, too, because apparently the safety of her own children depends on it.
“You know, on the rare nice day that we’ve had this spring, there’s a lot of kids on bikes running around Southdale constituency and a lot of kids at parks,” Selby said during debate on whether to reimburse thousands of motorists ticketed illegally by photo radar in so-called construction zones. “And I have to say my kids get pretty excited and run out on the road without looking and that can happen at seven o’clock at night in front of a park.”
Selby and her NDP colleagues voted against an opposition motion to reimburse motorists ticketed illegally in so-called construction zones.
And now that she’s in cabinet, hopefully for her sake, she can get more photo radar in her community.
