Erin Selby can now get her new photo radar vans

- March 28th, 2011

Congratulations to NDP MLA Erin Selby on her appointment to Premier Greg Selinger’s cabinet.
Selby was given the advanced education portfolio Monday in anticipation of October’s provincial election, where the NDP will be trying to hang on to south-end seats like Selby’s Southdale riding.
To commemorate Selby’s new appointment, I present to you two of her best quotations from debate in the legislative assembly.
The topic: Photo radar.
The slant: Selby said in 2009 that her constituents want more photo radar vehicles in their neighbourhod.

Selby
Erin Selby chats with former justice minister Dave Chomiak
in 2009 during controversial debate over photo radar.

“One of their ideas since about last year has been, could I please talk to our local city councilor about getting more photo radar in Island Lakes,” Selby said June 9, 2009 in the legislature. “They have been asking that for a year.”

Actually, now that Selby is in cabinet, I think she’ll have far more success at convincing her city councilor to get more photo radar vehicles in her community. And it’s a good thing, too, because apparently the safety of her own children depends on it.

“You know, on the rare nice day that we’ve had this spring, there’s a lot of kids on bikes running around Southdale constituency and a lot of kids at parks,” Selby said during debate on whether to reimburse thousands of motorists ticketed illegally by photo radar in so-called construction zones. “And I have to say my kids get pretty excited and run out on the road without looking and that can happen at seven o’clock at night in front of a park.”
Selby and her NDP colleagues voted against an opposition motion to reimburse motorists ticketed illegally in so-called construction zones.
And now that she’s in cabinet, hopefully for her sake, she can get more photo radar in her community.
Congratulations, Erin.

Diane McGifford= PHD and University professor
Erin Selby= BA and former TV anchor

It is a good thing deputy ministers and those beneath them run the show.

Not really sure what a park area has to do with the construction zone tickets. I wonder where Ms Selby’s thought process was on that ? She gets an F for debate in my books, but she talks reel good huh, you know, like.

I usually dont agree with erin on very much but on the photo radar i do. I challenge anyone to sit on pebble beach or beaverhill and see cars speeding and going right through stop signs. Every morning i see at least five to ten vehicles blow through the four way stop sign at pebble beach and meadowbrook. And most of them are parents with children in there vehicles. Hey what about the roundabout, vehicles are suppose to slow down to 15 k while entering, but that never happens. Vehicles come speeding down lakewood into the roundabout without any regard for anything. Try crossing at the crosswalk on the roundabout and see if you can make it Just go there and see for yourself. I would love seeing all those drivers ticketed and maybe they will smarten up but i doubt it.

Who else could they have chosen for this Minister position? I think the pool is pretty shallow.
