CANADIANS TO GET AMERICAN TREATMENT?

- September 9th, 2012

PANAMA CITY – Dutch legend Rinus Michels once described soccer as “war.”

The Panamanians are threatening to carry on the tradition.

It’s an intimidation tactic the Americans used to extract Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega from hiding in 1989. After the U.S. invasion, the former Central American leader sought refuge in the Vatican embassy in Panama City.

In an effort to pluck the ousted leader from the embassy, U.S. soldiers positioned massive speakers around the compound and blasted music in a psychological warfare tactic that unsettled Noriega and his hosts. Noriega surrendered days later.

Now, Panamanian supporters are apparently hoping for similar results before Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier.

“We’ll be there,” one caller to a local radio station said Sunday, telling of his plans to gather outside Canada’s hotel and disturb the Canadians. “Seven o’clock Monday night.”

Another local supporter told the Sun that local fans usually reserve that kind of treatment for when the Americans visit Panama, but that an exception might be made following Canada’s impressive win over Panama last week, a win that sent Canada top of CONCACAF’s Group C.

The supporter said that although local radio stations aren’t pushing for fans to give the Canadians a rude awakening, as many as 1,000 Panamanians could gather outside Canada’s hotel here to blast music, sing and drink well into Tuesday morning.

A scheme commonly used by fans of Central American nations to unsettle visiting teams, with Canada now on top, some locals are suggesting Canada’s run of form warrants implementing U.S.-style tactics.

We’ll wait and see what takes shape outside the Crown Plaza hotel here Monday night.

this is a horrible article and anyone who follows canadian soccer knows that this isn’t “the american treatment” these types of antics happen whenever we travel, this is nothing compared to having bags of piss thrown at our players on corners, this is nothing new.
