Craft breweries don’t just churn out tasty suds to quaff at your local.
They’re also a boon for the local economy. At least, that’s the subject of an upcoming seminar hosted by Calgary Economic Development and Village Brewery.
The Economic Impacts of Local Beer, running Jan. 10 at Village’s southeast brewery, will dissect how craft breweries, like Village (but also Big Rock, Wild Rose, and, yes, even Minhas) help spur economic growth.
Not only does healthy competition in the beer marketplace provide advantage to the consumer in the form of choice, it also fills vacant commercial space, provides jobs and expands the tax base. Breweries in Calgary have also shown a willingness to support the local arts scene, which can be a boon to the city as a whole.
Speakers in this webinar include Texas economist, and microbrewery owner, Scott Metzger, who recently completed a study on the economic impact of microbreweries for the University of Texas-San Antonio.
It will also feature Ben Teague, senior VP of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce and executive director of the Asheville, N.C.-based Asheville Economic Development Coalition. Asheville is home to a whopping 11 microbreweries.
