Aside from the long lost beer ad that proclaimed “I am Canadian!” the notion of our pride in our potent potables is not a new one.

We have long championed our beer, our wine and our whisky.

And there’s plenty to celebrate this Canada Day weekend.

Whether you’re raising a glass to the ever-growing craft beer, decades of wine-making or hoisting a Crown and Coke, there is no doubt our drinking and our patriotism are intertwined.

Around town, you can mark Canada Day week with a handful of events devoted to drinking the best our country is offering.

At Willow Park Wines & Spirits, there is the Oh Canada! Wine Festival, Saturday at 7 p.m., letting people try the best from Naramata to Niagara. Tickets to that event are $40.

Sunday afternoon, CRAFT Beer Market has their first, and hopefully annual, Canada Day Craft Beer Festival. “What could be more Canadian that sipping on Canadian craft beers on Canada Day?” CRAFT’s website asks. An order of their poutine to go along with it, perhaps. Tickets are $20 and get you 20 sample tickets.

Next Tuesday, Crowfoot Wines & Spirits lets you keep the patriotism flowing with A Celebration of Canadian Wine, Beer & Cheese. Tickets are $25.

So whether you’re enjoying fireworks, having a backyard barbecue or watching some football (CFL or Euro — we are a multicultural country, right?) don’t forget to stock up on some of Canada’s finest.

Happy Canada Day!
