On September 17, the Houston Astros gave the world a wonderful, unexpected present — the infamous butt slide.
Saturday night, 11 days later, the 51-110 team offered another gem.
Catcher Matt Pagnozzi accomplished a rare feat in the sixth inning when he attempted to fake a throw to second base — and failed miserably.
He ended up whipping the ball into the dirt below him.
The ball bounced towards the on-deck circle as Pagnozzi’s mind swirled in search of the round white thing. A runner from third base crossed the plate safely to put the New York Yankees up 2-1.
The Yanks eventually won by that very score — of course they did — extending Houston’s losing streak to 14 games with its season finale to be played out Sunday afternoon.
Unfortunately, MLB.com has not made the laughable lowlight available for embedding. Eye on Baseball, thankfully, has a GIF-ed version of the incident.
Enjoy the mediocrity.
