Bug Selig wins inaugural Bud Selig Award

MLB commissioner Bud Selig was honoured at the Baseball Assistance Team dinner Tuesday night in New York with the inaugural “Commissioner Bud Selig Leadership Award”.

Yes, you read that right.

Even though the news started to trend later in the day, it is actually old news. On Dec. 5, MLB posted this press release about the Baseball Assistance Team creating the award and announcing Selig as its first winner.

Say what you will about the recipient, but Selig has been one of the biggest contributors to helping out former baseball personnel in financial trouble. Those people include ex-players, managers, coaches, scouts, umpires, athletic trainers, front office personnel, minor league players and personnel, Negro Leagues players, players from the Women’s Professional Baseball League, as well as spouses and children under the age of 24.

People love to pile on the commissioner for his various gaffes (a tie at the all-star game?), but he has begun making MLB a cleaner sport with various performance-enhancing drug suspensions (most notably Alex Rodriguez’s season-long ban), will expand the use of video replay and helped grow the league into one of the biggest in North America.
