Girl, 9, starring on high school varsity basketball team

- January 8th, 2014

Athletically speaking, what did you accomplish at age nine?

Probably normal things, like scoring your first free throw on an undersized basketball net. Or maybe hitting your first baseball from a pitcher instead of a tee — you know, beginner stuff.

Meanwhile, a pair of siblings from Florida are, uh, ahead of the curve, one might say.

Julian Newman, whom MaxPreps.com profiled last year, tore up the local high school basketball circuit as a Grade 5 student. The New York Times picked up the story (you can read it here).

The video below shows Julian as a Grade 6 student, still doing his whole domination thing at the varsity level.

MaxPreps checked in with the Newman family again this basketball season.

It turns out Julian’s sister has managed to one-up him.

Jaden may be a nine-year-old in Grade 4, but she plays basketball — and very much holds her own — against kids five to eight years her senior. See for yourself in the footage below.

Both siblings suit up for Downey Christian School in Orlando, Fla. The super-underage arrangement is all made possible thanks to their dad, Jamie, who is Downey’s varsity coach.

Jaden is apparently posting an average of 14.8 points and 7.5 assists per game. Now 12, Julian is averaging better than a double-double with 13.2 points and 10.2 assists per game.

It’s true — it’s impossible to really grasp how elite these kids are at basketball when it’s unknown how good the competition is.

But, who cares? These kids are bad-ass.
