49ers fans ‘appalled’ by Seahawks fans’ loud cheering at NFL game

Monday, we told you about how Guinness World Records put its stamp of approval on a long-time suspicion.

The organization confirmed the Seattle Seahawks boast the loudest fans in the NFL. Or anywhere, for that matter.

It turns out this accomplishment didn’t go over well with San Francisco 49ers fans, particularly Judy Spelman and Rich Schiller, who submitted a letter to the editor Monday to the San Francisco Chronicle complaining about too-loud rival fans.

Spelman and Schiller use phrases like “juiced on noise” and “cease and desist” when talking about the horrible, horrible act of cheering on one’s team.

In fact, they are “appalled by the unsportsmanlike conduct” and recommend the NFL looks into a keep-it-down-over-there rule for visiting fans.

The aforementioned letter to the editor in full:

Unsportsmanlike conduct in Seattle

Was anyone else appalled by the unsportsmanlike conduct of the Seattle Seahawks and their fans, juiced on noise, which surely creates as big an advantage over an opponent as any performance enhancing drug and which, to their shame, NFL officials turn the same blind eye they have to concussions and drugs (“Seattle states case loudly, clearly in rout,” Sports, Sept. 16)?

It would be simple to fix. Seahawks players and managers would ask their fans to cease and desist, and the NFL would implement a new rule: The visiting team may stop the game when fan noise is greater than a specified decibel level, and should this rule be violated in more than three games, no home games will be played at the offending field for the rest of the season, including playoff games. Things would quiet down.

At a time when the world seems sour, sports give us a place of joy, community and hope, and to have it spoiled is a bigger loss than it seems on the surface.

Amazingly, there is at least one other 49ers fan who is on board with this ludicrous idea.

Ellen Gust “couldn’t agree more” with Spelman and Schiller.

She submitted another Chronicle letter to the editor, listed below:

Game, less noise

I couldn’t agree more with “Unsportsmanlike conduct in Seattle” (Letters, Sept. 17).

It wasn’t a game of skill anymore; it was an exhibition of excessive stadium noise, posturing obscenities in your opponent’s face to draw a foul and street-punk behavior to fire up tensions to gain any advantage to get the win.

I hope the NFL will listen before the fans go deaf. Please stop the excessive stadium noise, and just play football.

Ellen Gust, Palo Alto

Wow that is the stupidest thing I’ve ever read.
No more home games if its too loud??? This sounds like the kind of person who has never actually been to a live game.

I honestly cannot believe what I just read!!! What a disgrace by fans of a great organization.

Go figure, these two numbskulls saw their team get throttled to the tune of 29-3 and now they’re complaining the Seahawk fans were too loud. Yeah right as if it would have made a difference had it been a tad quieter. Listen up Niner fans, you may think your team is tops in the NFC west but in reality your team is actually a distant second behind Seattle.

Absolutely one of the dumbest things I have ever heard!!! I wish T.O. fans were that loud, passionate & fun at games

Clearly 49er fans have never been to a Roughriders game LOL.. crowd noise is part of the experience. It’s what gives the home team its advantage.

Huge 49ers fan, and these three are embaressing. The niners got their butts kicked, the noise had little to do with it. The noise from the home team fans makes the game, sad the sf press published this article and further embaressed themselves

Looks the whining is not only Harbaugh’s responsibility. The 49 er’s fans do it as well.
