Coyotes goalie Mike Smith scores as time runs out

- October 20th, 2013

Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith became the 11th goalie in NHL history to score last night when he sent a laser from crease to crease in the dying seconds to cap a 5-2 win over the visiting Detroit Red Wings.

But here’s what I don’t understand: Why don’t the same people who ridiculed San Jose Sharks young gun Tomas Hertl for his between-the-legs-finish attack Smith, too?

After all, there was no need for Smith to make Saturday night’s game a blowout as he could have just held onto the puck.

Instead, he wanted to be flashy, dropping the puck in traffic before sending a shot up the ice that was more or less self-serving.

Hertl was lambasted for showing a flashy piece of skill. Smith should be, too.

OTHER GOALIES WHO HAVE SCORED

Bill Smith (NYI, 1979)
Ron Hextall (PHI, 1987)
Chris Osgood (DET, 1996)
Martin Brodeur (NJD, 1997)
Damian Rhodes (OTT, 1999)
Jose Theodore (MTL, 2001)
Evgeni Nabokov (SHS, 2002)
Mika Noronen (BUF, 2004)
Chris Mason (NAS, 2006)
Cam Ward (CAR, 2011)

‘After all, there was no need for Smith to make Saturday night’s game a blowout as he could have just held onto the puck.’ Since when is 5 – 2 a ‘blow – out’? Really? Exaggerate much? Goalies actually scoring a goal (as opposed to being credited with a goal) are a rarity. Hertl scoring on a breakaway to make it what, 9 – 2, with a shot between his legs is a hot dog move. Absolutely no comparison.

Sure, you have probably never even played the game yet you want to criticize a goalie that is just reacting to the play. Once again trying to make a story out of nothing

Why should he be lambasted? Good on him.

Lambasted? Why? For doing something every goalie dreams of doing, especially in the NHL? Get real.

the above 2 comments are missing the point. People freaked out on Hertl’s supposed showboating, a goalie going for an empty net goal when you’re leading 4-2 with a few seconds left is also considered showboating yet nobody questioned it.

One can only hope you are trying to get hits rather than provide insight. There are thousands of goals scored in a year in the NHL. The fraction of all time by goalies makes it unique. Put things into context, like a true reporter. Perhaps there is a future for you on Fox News, the home of fair and balanced reporting. At the end of the day, 10 years from now lots of people will remember his goal. i doubt anyone will remember this column.

What is this clown talking about? What a stupid comment. A goalie making history is very different from a rookie showboating. Sounds like someone here has never played the game.

You cant really add Billy Smith to that list in the same way those others have been..and you should have added the Immortal Ron Hextall, twice.
