Wayne Rooney’s tumultuous off-season took another turn last week when a training-ground collision with teammate Phil Jones saw him sit out Saturday’s loss to Liverpool.
A mystery until Wednesday, Rooney’s injury has also cost him a place in England’s squad for a pair of critical World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine.
That led to widespread speculation and ridicule concerning the English striker, who was rumoured to be leaving Manchester United ahead of Europe’s summer transfer window.
Earlier this week, England teammate Theo Walcott defended Rooney, fueling more speculation about the 27-year-old’s reported injury.
“It’s not very nice to see,” Walcott said. “It’s like something out of a horror film.”
Rooney offered the public a behind-the-scenes look on Wednesday, posting a pair of gruesome photos to his Facebook page.
The only question now is why did Jones deem it necessary to axe Rooney in the forehead – and at training no less?
All kidding aside, criticism of Rooney, a loyal England servant for so many years, should come to an end.
Anyone who has played the game will take one look at the above photos and rule out Rooney playing for a while.
