Anatomy of a fake NHL trade gone viral

Twitter exploded Friday evening following news the Oilers had signed free agent goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov and swapped defenceman Ladislav Smid and minor-league goaltender Olivier Roy to the Flames for minor-league goaltender Laurent Brossoit and forward Roman Horak.

In all that hoopla, a fan in Edmonton tweeted the following:

 

Then, a fake Twitter handle that masquerades as TSN commentator Gord Miller dropped this:

Hockey News writer Adam Proteau retweeted the fake trade to his followers. Other media and fans jumped on the bandwagon and started to circulate the news before realizing it hadn’t happened. “Hemsky” began trending across Canada also, reaching the Top 10.
