Canada, U.S. women’s hockey teams brawl

- October 13th, 2013

Fists went flying Saturday during an exhibition game between the Canadian and U.S. women’s hockey teams.

The line brawl was sparked by American forward Jocelyne Lamoureux running into Canadian goaltender Shannon Szabados as she made a save with just over three minutes left in what ended up being a 3-2 win for Canada.

“We had a similar scrap in 2010, so I guess we have one every Olympic cycle to get it out of our system,” Team Canada captain Hayley Wickenheiser told reporters.

“It was kind of fun to see, and it brought a lot of intensity to another dog fight with these guys. There are few if any blowouts in this series.”

The game was the first of a six exhibition meetings between the two teams ahead of the Sochi Games, so this may have just been Round 1.

Canada is the defending Olympic champion, but the U.S. took gold at the world championship earlier this year.

Here’s the fight from another angle:

This is terrible , we are trying to get this out of hockey , i know the fans are cheering but the media and the people who hate the game and dont buy tickets dont like it so it must GO!!!

Ha ha! The ref blows the whistle louder like it will help them stop fighting. Who is he, Pavlov??

Classy American players…run the goalie when u r down by a goal with 3 minutes in the third. Then notice one Canadian player goes after one american player gets up and is attacked by 2 more American girls. Wow…classy!

This is just strait dangerous. High chance of somebody falling to the ice and getting a skate blade in the eye or slashed in the wrist. I’m pro fighting in hockey when people are able to keep a level head and have respect for the safety of the other players,

This is awesome! Nothing wrong with fighting..

2 Americans to fight one Canadian…Typical! They can’t fight and they can’t play our game!

  8. steven | October 13, 2013 at 9:50 pm

that was a brawl .where all they did was pushing each other when they take the gloves off and punch each other then I call that a brawl..

it’s hockey…women’s hockey at that…who cares…..give it enough time and hockey and football will be legislated out of business because they are both incapable of enough change

Your game? Canada has been cup-free since 1993. There are guys playing in the NHL that weren’t even born yet the last time one of your lame cities won a Cup.

  11. G-Rot | October 13, 2013 at 10:53 pm

@Tim Johnson: Canadian cities not winning a cup has nothing to do with it being OUR game. You are clearly a person that has no idea that almost every successful American franchise is a core of Canadian players leading the teams to victory. aka Chicago, Pittsburgh and Boston. I have no problem with our cities not winning as long as our boys keep winning them somewhere! haha

  12. Terry R | October 13, 2013 at 10:57 pm

Hey Tim…Most of the best players playing on US teams are Canadian! I think you know nothing about the true game of hockey! As for being lame, I think most US cities are lame, and I think you are also!

So, if the Blue Jays win the World Series next year would YOU agree with the Americans who claim Canadians shouldn’t win THIER game???

  14. Doug | October 13, 2013 at 11:23 pm

Odd that people say the Americans cant play, as they hold the World Championship. Please quit making us look like idiots and stop being hypocrites. Act Canadian.

  15. Brian | October 13, 2013 at 11:49 pm

If you run the goalie then you had better expect to get your clocked cleaned out! End of story!

  16. bruce | October 14, 2013 at 8:45 am

run the goalie hard and see what happens !in any sport if the goaltender is hit the team mates will defend.they should have dropped the helmets.

  17. Smart American | October 14, 2013 at 8:53 am

Americans have been better at every sport, we won the Stanley Cup last year and will do it again. The canadian team were the ones looking to start all this, the fighting makes up for their lack of skills.

Someone who claims to be Gary Bettman has the nerve to comment on a game that he is single handily ruining. Mr. Bettman, fighting definitely must be controlled, but there are many aspects of the game that need to be controlled in all leagues. Vicious, blatant attacks on ‘tenders should not happen, but when they do expect to have repercussions. Be thankful this tussle is the choice to alleviate the aggression and not a check from behind, or a vicious slash, or a cheap career ending hit. There is a time and a place and this was the time and this was the place. Mr. Bettman ….. go ruin another sport.

Americans are as classless as they are arrogant…End of story!!!

  20. Stephen J | October 14, 2013 at 9:23 am

They have full face masks on, so a punch does no damage except to the person throwing the punch.

  21. s boudreau | October 14, 2013 at 9:45 am

    GOOOOOOOOOOO CANADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Mrs-Brigand | October 14, 2013 at 10:13 am

Were they pulling each others hair? Yesterday the headline was saying Luongo scored on himself and this one called a pushing match a brawl. Typical for the Sun

  23. mark | October 14, 2013 at 10:15 am

Its not a Canadian/American thing people, Brian has it spot on. These girls are supposed to be professionals and should take safety into consideration. That being said she had to take her lumps….period!!!!!

  24. Steve | October 14, 2013 at 10:44 am

At least Canada won the Hockey game.

  25. Sk | October 14, 2013 at 10:51 am

This is classless – enough with women trying to be the same as men. Women’s hockey is awful there are only two teams that are competitive US and Canada, this sport should be taken out of the Olympics – this type of behavior shows the women’s teams for both countries need to show sportsmanship if they are trying to be role models for the young ladies who enjoy playing hockey. If I want to see people playing like men Then I will watch men play sports

  26. Pete | October 14, 2013 at 11:05 am

Hey, it’s good for the game. Let it be. It’s the North American style. Women are just as passionate about the game as the guys.

  27. aaron | October 14, 2013 at 11:10 am

bahaha at bettman..the media and the people who dont buy tickets hate it…but all the people who buy tickets love it..whats next nerf pucks..

  28. Joe Blow | October 14, 2013 at 2:13 pm

I love how the Americans are always 2-3 on one in the scraps. You never see a Canadian jump into a one-on-one fight. As Ron Burgundy would say “Keep it classy”.

  29. Bob the Snail | October 14, 2013 at 9:05 pm

Canadians sure have a high opinion of themselves. And yes, I am Canadian. The hockey chauvinism is boring, a little pathetic.

  30. Jesse | October 15, 2013 at 5:34 pm

Lol @ Smart American saying US won the Stanley cup last year… Incase you haven’t noticed more then have of the Blackhawks are Canadian.. As aMatter of fact I think there’s more Swedish Players then American players on the team.

  31. Semipro | October 16, 2013 at 8:34 pm

“Raymond”….uhmmmm last I checked its been several decades since Canada won the cup!
